KRL
Before "Black Monday" gets here and Woody reveals his plan here are my acceptable candidates for the GM & HC spots: GM All of these candidates are from teams that consistently draft well and when they lose free agents they continue to maintain their talent base - Eric DeCosta (BAL Asst. GM) - Vince Newsome (BAL Dir. Pro Personnel) - Joe Horitz (BAL Dir. College Scouting) - Eliot Wolf (GB Dir. Pro Personnel) - Brian Gutekunst (GB Dir. College Scouting) - Mike Williams (SF Dir. Pro Personnel) - Matt Malaspina (SF Dir. College Scouting) HC - Jim Harbaugh (SF HC): Involved in developing Luck at Stanford. Turned around Smith when he got to SF and helped develop Kaepernick - David Shaw (Stanford HC): Involved in developing Luck at Stanford. Continued the excellent success at Stanford after Harbaugh & Luck left. With Stanford's academic requirements he doesn't get SEC type recruits - Dan Quinn (SEA DC): Has done an excellent job with the SEA defense. He's been a Jet coach in the past and he's a NJ guy - Vic Fangio (SF DC): Has done an excellent job with the SF defense even while dealing with injuries to All-Pro players (Willis, Bowman, Smith) - Todd Bowles (ARZ DC): Has done an excellent job with the ARZ defense even while dealing with a ton of injuries - Bill Lazor (MIA OC): Has done a good job developing Tannehill and he has experience in the Chip Kelly offense if we draft Mariota - Pep Hamilton (IND OC): Involved in the development of Luck at Stanford and IND. Also has been a Jet coach in the past - Tom Clements (GB OC): Was Rodgers QB coach when he first got drafted, so he knows what it takes to develop a young QB

Integrity28
Good post, a couple of these guys I know nothing about. I always appreciate the thought you put into this stuff though. Question about Lazor, I know nothing about him, and am assuming his highest post has been OC, does it really make sense to let choosing Mariota dictate our next HC hire? Perhaps knowing Kelly's offense + choosing Mariota is the only thing that makes Lazor a candidate, doesn't that put us in an "over-promoted coordinator running the show" situation again? I'm mostly curious about candidates that have experience head coaching at the NFL/NCAA level, or have shown the aptitude for it, and I'm less interested in candidates that may offer some sort of connection to a draft pick. #27TheDominator
I'm upset. I don't hate any of those names! I didn't know much about Vince Newsome, but was hoping he was Ozzie's son and that a desire to promote family would get us a shot at DeCosta who'd be my #1 choice. Alas, they are not related
sg3
If Gen0 locks up the first pick for us with the lose out and Buc win over Carolina, I'd include in the HC candidates, Heldrich the Oregon HC and Scott Frost the Duck OC..
Barkus
KRL, good to see you posting here. Do us a solid, and post your camp reports here when the time comes I admit I never heard of some of the GM names. Decosta is not leaving at least per prior discussions. I like Wolf. I really like Tom Gamble from our last GM interviews, not sure if he would be candidate again. Any of the coaches listed would be certainly be worth interviewing. sourceworx
I think getting DeCosta is a pipe dream. He seems firmly entrenched in Baltimore, and is Ozzie's heir apparent. I'd love a Wolfe/Shaw tandem taking over this team.

billo83
I only want an offensive minded coach. Time for this team to have a new direction. It's been almost 20 years since we've had a HC experienced in offense. Even longer than that if we exclude Kotite who was a joke of an OC as well. Also, no ex-Jet coaches either. Time for new blood top to bottom.

Shadetree
Thanks KRL. The thing I love about the list is the teams/programs the candidates on the list come from-places with a pretty long history of sound NFL decisions and a history of putting a quality product on the field. The GM candidates from SF definitely have my attention....that team has drafted lights-out the last few years. Im still wrapped up in giving Kubiak an interview, at the very least. Joe W. Namath
Woddy will hire a coach who has had success being a head coach in the nfl and is an offensive guy. Mike Shannen will be named coach and given full control of this franchise. Woody will prop Mike and his 2 super bowl rings up at the press conference and tell us all we have a proven, super bowl winning coach running the ship. If you think we are hiring any college or 1st time nfl head coaches you are crazy. Get ready for shannahanagins.

DaBallhawk
Not sure how being able to scout players translates to being a good GM. You have to run a team, you have to know the game, know how to handle players, stars, coaches, hire the right staff. Scouts aren't up for that task. The Ravens guys aren't going anywhere by the way. We know for a fact that DeCosta is not going to give up his (soon to be) GM job to take over this mess. He's in a perfect situation, surrounded by guys he handpicked. Come to think of it, why would ANYBODY who knows what he's doing and is wanted by more than 1 team pick the Jets? It ain't happening. Unless you hand over the franchise to him, unless you pay him huge amounts of dollars. Same can be said for the HC job. The only way you're gonna get a stud HC-candidate is to pay him ridiculously and let him run the team (HC & GM), he's gonna do it all by himself. Definitely not the way we did this year with Idzik & Rex.

We should just discuss sh*theads cause that is all we can get? Are we supposed to be the kid sitting down at the school dance cause we don't think any of the pretty girls will dance with us? Not at all. But what's the point of discussing guys that we know for a fact won't leave their place a) and certainly won't pick the Jets over any of their other options? I mean it's like trying to discuss how to upgrade the WR position and then guys throw out names like Calvin Johnson or Josh Gordon. Let's look at some realistic targets at least it would make sense discussing those guys. I mean look at who we ended up the last time we tried to get a new GM. Me too. The track record here with promoted coordinators (or less) isn't great. Rex has really, probably, been the best one since Walt Michaels, and he's obviously fallen short when it comes to coaching the whole team. I'm actually more interested in college guys than most NFL retreads. I'm not gonna pretend to know anything about any of them, but that Gus Malzahn (sp?) guy that Lionel Richie talks about sounded intriguing. I'd deem a successful guy from the NCAA who's interested in making his mark at the pro level as more qualified than most NFL coordinators - unless, of course, that NFL coordinator has college head coaching on his résumé. Bowles and Quinn would both be good hires. I think shying away from a candidate just because his background is on the defensive side would be stupid. We don't need the offensive equivalent of Rex. We need a head coach. I agree 100%. The team needs to bring in the best coach, not just the best offensive coach. No reason eliminate 50% of your candidates before even getting started looking. Woddy will hire a coach who has had success being a head coach in the nfl and is an offensive guy. Mike Shannen will be named coach and given full control of this franchise. But yeah, the next GM should come from the personnel side of things. Director of Scouting, Personnel Director, that sort of thing. The top guy, the whose name goes on every draft pick, needs to have the ability to evaluate talent himself. He needs to be able to look at a couple different scouting reports, and be able to make a determination - rather than relying on underlings for that. There are probably 1000 accountants for every qualified personnel guy who could come in as an assistant GM in charge of the money side of things. Having a money guy in charge with assistants who do the personnel work is ass-backwards. The fact that the Jets finalists last time were two accountants kinda scares me. I hope they approach the search differently this time and get a personnel guy in here.

If we are in position to land Mariotta then it would make a ton of sense to hire Helfrich as our HC. He may be a little raw, but we'd have someone who could maximize Mariotta's skill set. The last thing we need is a Head Coach that is going to force feed a west coast offense to a kid that has ZERO exposure to that system. Again, all of this is assuming we draft Mariotta.
