How appealing is Jets' likely head coaching vacancy? Not very, according to these rankings

Rex Ryan almost certainly will get his final shot at the Patriots this Sunday, at least in his role as the Jets' head coach.

The Jets are 3-11, and Ryan is well on his way toward being fired Dec. 29, the day after the season ends in Miami. General manager John Idzik, in his second season with the Jets, could also find himself unemployed that day.

Bottom line: Owner Woody Johnson is not pleased with what he's seen this season.

So while Ryan has one last Jets-Patriots matchup with Bill Belichick, and tries to spoil some of New England's playoff aspirations, the Jets' organization has reportedly already begun seeking Ryan's replacement.

How attractive is the Jets' soon-to-be-vacant job to candidates? Not very, according to one ranking. USA Today put the Jets seventh in its 10 most appealing potential vacancies.

Here's the full list:

1. Giants

2. 49ers

3. Bears

4. Dolphins

5. Panthers

6. Falcons

7. Jets

8. Jaguars

9. Raiders

10. Washington

Not all of these teams will end up firing their head coaches, of course. But what makes the Jets so unappealing, at least based on USA Today's assessment?

Here's what USA Today listed as the pros and cons for the job:

Pros: You're coaching in the biggest city in the league. You inherit a strong run defense and decent first-round draft pick.

Cons: Unique coverage of the team by the local media. An especially impassioned fan base. Constant second-guessing on Twitter by Joe Namath.

Left unsaid, as a potential con, is the presence of Idzik. If Johnson decides to retain his general manager, then the Jets would again find their coach and GM on different timelines for job security.

Would high-level head coaching candidates want to come work for a GM, in Idzik, who is on thin ice after a less-than-impressive start to his tenure with the Jets? Perhaps a clean slate, with both a new head coach and general manager in 2015, would be the best approach for Johnson.

(You can take a look at some potential candidates for the Jets' head coaching job in the photo gallery at the top of this post.)

If Johnson retains Idzik, it would be similar to where the Jets found themselves after 2012. Johnson decided to can GM Mike Tannenbaum. But Johnson kept Ryan, and forced Idzik into a marriage with a coach who needed to win now, for his own job security, while Idzik made moves with the future in mind.

The retention of Idzik, if it happens, could be the biggest potential downside for the Jets' head coaching vacancy, definitely more so than local media ripping the Jets for stinking. That is part of the deal for any NFL coach, in almost any market.

Does Johnson trust Idzk to hire (or at least help hire) the Jets' next head coach? Would a prospective head coach feel wary about taking the Jets job, considering he might soon find himself working for a new general manager?

Those are questions Johnson must soon consider (if he hasn't already), as he attempts to make the Jets' head coaching gig as appealing as possible to potential candidates.

What do you think, gang? Is USA Today's assessment of the Jets' job accurate? Or is this a more appealing job opening than seventh out of 10, in the list above? Leave your thoughts in the comments section down below.

Typical mental defective argument is defective.

Self-loathing will get New York media talking heads nowhere.

The New York job is perfectly fine appealing, no more or less than any other badie bad team is each year.

The ongoing fantasy narrative that somehow Woody, or new York, or us Fans, make Coaching/Playing in new York some horrible thing they all run away from....is pure, distilled, fantasy.

this isn't entirely true.  Even putting the owner/GM stuff aside

-Given a choice of 2 NY jobs, the Giants, as an original NFL franchise (and 4 rings in the last 20 years) have way more cachet. Ditto 49ers and Bears. Original NFL franchises are always preferred over AFL and expansion jobs.

-It also should be noted that Dolphins and Jags jobs don't have income tax, a potentially huge amount of money.

-Many coaches in the league are "good ole boys" and don't want to move their families to the Sodom of NY tri state area. That boosts the Carolina and Atlanta jobs. The Falcons are building a new stadium, which usually means extra spending on players.

-Looking at the Jets current roster, this one is completely stripped down, outside of C, LT and the DL the cupboards are basically bare. Not having a high enough draft pick to get a top QB hurts.

There's a reason why all the coaches since Parcells have been first timers.

I always see this mentioned by fans.... I never see this mentioned by anyone as a reason why they signed with one team over another.

I don't get that part from an outsider's perspective. Will other teams on the list fire both the GM and HC?

At least Idzik won't put the next HC in immediate cap hell.

just cause people don't talk about it... money is a factor

NJ Income tax can range up to 9%. on a 4 million dollar salary that's 360,000$

absolutely....   Mickelson mentioned it and got killed in the press. Players have learned. STFU about state taxes but they get it.

BTW..they all claim Florida for true residency which shelters their off the field income.

/facepalm.....

Sorry, no. No prospective NFL coach gives a **** which team was here first or what rings Parcells won in the 1980's. Current roster, how much they pay, who the GM is, that's the list of what they care about.

-It also should be noted that Dolphins and Jags jobs don't have income tax, a potentially huge amount of money.

Legitimate issue.....but one that most 5-million-a-year NFL coaches won't care about enough to have that determine who they'll coach for.

-Many coaches in the league are "good ole boys" and don't want to move their families to the Sodom of NY tri state area. That boosts the Carolina and Atlanta jobs. The Falcons are building a new stadium, which usually means extra spending on players.

Implying NFL coaches move their whole families every time they change jobs.

Hint, they don't.

-Looking at the Jets current roster, this one is completely stripped down, outside of C, LT and the DL the cupboards are basically bare. Not having a high enough draft pick to get a top QB hurts.

No less talented than any other 2-3 win team. And all of them are ??? at QB, which is partially why they are 2-3 win teams.

There's a reason why all the coaches since Parcells have been first timers.

And that reason is that most NFL Coaches are "first timers", and generally recycled coaches are abysmal failures who are almost guaranteed not to match their previous successes.

Would you have preferred a Shannahan to Rex? I wouldn't having seen Shanny suck big fat dick here in D.C.

Again, the NY Job is fine, stop this foolish and delusional self-loathing.

You really think there aren't ways around that? I've never once seen a guy have two offers so close with one being from the Jets and Giants that it would make a difference. It's rare that a guy would ever have two offers close enough that it would swing them one way or the other. It's a complete red herring argument.

Bad analogy - Mickelson is a golfer and there was no should I sign with one team over another situation. He was merely publicly stating he wanted to move to Florida to avoid California state taxes - which was ******* moronic from a PR standpoint. No matter how high his taxes could be, when you make that statement following a year in which you made close to $40 million from winnings and endorsements, you look like a greedy ****.

While I agree that the job is plenty appealing - there's a lot to like about taking this job.

With that said - If a top flight candidate is choosing between two franchises - to think that the hostile media and over reactionary, impatient fan base won't play a part in that decision is simply wrong.

Look at that list again. A prospective HC would much rather have Eli, Cam, Matt Ryan, Cutler or  Tannyhill rather than Geno Smith. Some ??? are bigger than others.

So pay an extra $360,000....Of course salary will be an issue, but Woody's going to have to dig into his pockets on this one.

Woody stopped digging in his pockets about 2 years ago.

Blah, blah, blah such nonsense.  Every HC job in the NFL is attractive even the Jets

for a number of reasons:

- Once you put pen to contract you have secured your family's financial future for

a generation

- There are only 32 of these jobs in the world

- After wandering from job to job for years you finally have the power to shape a team

in your image

As for the Jets specifically here are some benefits:

- Excellent young DLine

- Good run blocking OLine and good running game

- Promising offensive pieces (Decker, Harvin, Kerley, Amaro, Ivory)

- High draft picks

- Excellent cap situation

With B/Us making 2 mill or less you bet it is, 500,000 for a home in Fla or Texas will get you a 4000 sq ft home. The throw in not paying 12% of that in state and local taxes it is a huge draw. If your making 6 or more mill, I can't see how it makes a diff. You will have to pay your asst coaches 100,000 more a year just to make it compatable. Then throw in that most people don't want to live in the northeast it can be a problem.

And to get to your point about it not being mentioned, think about how that sounds coming from a player or coach.

Essentially the con is an easily manipulated fan base.

Good GM's are going to love to come here with the excitement of Billboards going up to fire them after 23 games especially considering the first year was a forced cap restructure...

Good GMs won't be put off, guys like Idzik will.

Yes all of these jobs are attractive. No one is disputing that. the statement was how appealing is the Jets, compared to these other teams. If there are 10 jobs open, as USAtoday (or whoever) speculates, the Jets are probably in the bottom third. I don't see how this is an unfair statement.

We want a good candidate right? One who presumably has options?

Or do we want someone who is just happy to get any HC job?

1. Giants  Coughlin is going to stay one more year because it makes sense not to have the OC go as well and have Eli learn a 3rd offense in three years. (Sound                   Familiar ?)

2. 49ers  Aboslutely...young franchise QB, weapons on offense and a really good defense.

3. Bears:  I don't get this one. Cutler sucks, Brandon Marshall is a diva and their defense blows.

4. Dolphins: Philbin is not getting fired. Not with the progress that the Tannahill has shown.

5. Panthers: Interesting. They are not a team that fires coaches wily nily. Rivera sucks and should be out but I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't.

6. Falcons: Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Roddy White makes it very attractive.

7. Jets: New York ?

8. Jaguars: Ugh

9. Raiders: I would probably put them over the Jets and Jags because of Carr.

10. Washington: Ugh, Ugh, Ugh

I love that so many people are fooled by this Chad Pennington clone. It means that Miami is going to spin their wheels for a decade trying to win with this mirage of a good QB.

High completion percentage, low YPA, inability to beat good teams. Sound familiar?
