Let's all play 2015 NY Jet GM....

CanadaSteve

Recommended Posts

Here are the rules:

1) 5 cuts

2) 5 resignings....Just put the cost for the first year

3) You get 5 off-season moves, whether it be trades, contract extensions,  all UFA signings, or a combination of the three.  Again, just what it will cost us the first year

4) Draft to round 5

Information needed for this game:

PROJECTED 2015 CAP: $140 million (go on the low side to be safe)

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/07/cap-could-hit-160-million-in-2016/

2015 JET CAP Space: $41 million

http://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space/

2015 JET CAP WITH CARRY-OVER: $51 Million

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/The-salary-cap-implications-of-the-Percy-Harvin-trade.html

A little explanation on your decisions always makes it more interesting......GO!

5 CUTS

1) Percy Harvin......Is not worth $10 million a season.  We now owe a 6th instead of a 4th for his 2014 services.  No dead cap issue with the cut

2) Chris Johnson....Swing and a miss....$1.75 in dead money, but $3.5 million in cap savings

3) Calvin Pace....Great warrior, but this time, the cut is for good.  $125K in dead money, but $2.1 million in savings

4) Jason Babin....Thanks for the one year, but no point in keeping him.  $125K dead money, $1.5 in savings

5) Jeff Cumberland....Personally, I just do not see what he brings for the price tag 0 dead money, $1.9 million in savings

Dead money: $2 million dollars

Cap Savings: $19 million

NEW CAP SPACE: $70 million

5 RESIGNINGS

1) Percy Harvin: He can say "I won't take a pay-cut" all he wants.  He is not getting $10 million from us, nor any other team.  With the space we have, we can afford to over-spend a little and use him as a jack-of-all-trades player.  2015 hit: $6.5 million

2) Bilal Powell: I want to see what he could bring with more carries.  2015 hit: $1.5 million

3) Jaiquawn Jarrett: I think he has earned a significant pay raise.   2015 hit: $1.5 million

4) Kenrick Ellis: I think he becomes the new starting NT.     2015 hit: $3 million

5) David Harris: I like his leadership, but he would have to be realistic for this to actually happen.  2015 hit: $4.5 million

I did not resign Snacks.  I LOVE what he brings, but I think he can command something on the open market.  HE is a RFA, and can bring a decent pick with him.  This team has shown it can develop DL.  I like Ellis and TJ Barnes enough to believe this could work.

NEW CAP SPACE : $53 million

5 OFF-SEASON MOVES

1) The MO Wilkerson debate: I do not think this debate is as easy as many make it out.  With Suh stating he wants to play in the NY market, would this team be better to sign Mo for $12 million a season, or Suh for $12 million a season and get a 1st round pick for Mo in a trade?  Say what you want, but I think he would get us such a pick in the low 20's in my opinion.  To save the argument, Mo is extended here.   2015 hit: $12 million

2) Mike Iupati: I would overpay just to make this happen.  He would solidify one guard spot for half a decade.  2015 hit: $6.5 million.

3) Sam Bradford: I am presuming he will be available, and I presume he comes MUCH cheaper.    2015 hit: $3 million.

4) Walter Thurmond: Unfortunately, thanks to John Idzik, we have to over-pay for a CB this year instead of paying market value last year.  2015 hit: $7 million

5) Brooks Reed: WOW...an OLB who can rush the passer, especially if that is his job.  With our line, Reed could be scary good.  2015 hit: $4.5

NEW CAP SPACE: $20.0 million

5 DRAFT PICKS

1st: WR Amari Cooper: The win is a blessing.  I don't believe in Mariota as a talent, or Winston as sane enough to avoid the meltdown in a NY media.  Our future QB will have Cooper, Decker, Harvin, Kerley, and Amaro.  Now THAT is a receiving core.

2nd: LT Ty Sambrailo:  I do not believe in Brett Hundley, so why take the risk?  Sambrailo can play either Tackle position, giving him a year to learn.  He could push Giacomini this year, and could replace Brick in 2016 when his dead cap hit is more manageable.

3rd: QB Bryce Petty: He is projected in 3rd round as of now, he is a senior, he is big, and there is NO chance he sees the field with Bradford and Geno.  What a concept!  Letting a QB sit and learn for a year.

4th: ILB Jake Ryan: Could be a dream he is here this late, but we will have to see after the combine.

5th: RB Jeremy Langford: Going with the triple headed monster again.  Let him sit and spell off the other two.

Remember, if we went with Suh over Mo, it COULD possibly net us a young CB like Alex Carter, Ifo Ekpre Olomu, PJ Williams, Trae Waynes.  Would this team REALLY feel the loss of Mo with replacing him with Suh and then adding another young CB?

All right....critiques and other options. Lets see what everyone has to say.

our 4th was traded for Harvin. I would move Petty up to second, Ryan to the third and sign Brian Bulag to play LT. Looks real good though.

To my knowledge, the details are not fully complete on this.  If he is on the roster in 2015, the pick moves up to a 4th.  My guess is, Idzik protected himself by having a certain date set on that.  He will then cut him before that date, and then resign him.  This is my presumption, and if that is the case, we will have our fourth.  IF that is not the case, my guess is we do something to assure we have ourselves a 4th pick for the draft.

Looks good CanadaSteve. It’s a well-thought out plan. The only area i see us reaching at will be QB. With the Likes of RGIII possibly being traded, i wouldn’t be shocked if the Jets through their hat into the ring just to make a splash in the back pages of the NY rags.

You should send you resume off to Florham park. Maybe a canuck can change this thing around!

my only issue with this plan is that this is not madden...how are you doing this whole Mo vs Suh vs 1st swap? are you signing Suh first therefore pissing off your best player and the fan base? or are you trading Mo first...and what guarantee do you have that you are getting Suh right after?

the rest of the signing and the draft look good to me...i'd sign up.

Move Coples to DE. Trade Wilk for a 1st round pick.

We probably need Babin and Pace for one more season and they're both fine.  Keep'em

Cooper isn't falling to us at 6 keep dreaming guys.  Unless the teams ahead of us start winning games we're stuck at 6 and Melvin Gordon is the pick (please, no more crappy need based bust draft picks on defense).

Cut Chris Johnson since we're drafting Gordon and will get cap savings.

Cut Harvin before it's too late.

Trade a draft pick for Mike Glennon.

Sign Mike Iupati and Darrelle Revis.

Fire Idzik.

GM - Pay $$$ Parcells or Holmgren to come here.

HC - Let Parcells or Holmgren pick whoever they want.

My mock v2.0--Dec 18

Sign: Suh, Iupati, RG3

Trade: Mo Wilk for low first-rounder (both Colts, Seahawks could use a pass rusher of his caliber, and at this end of the round, they're gone) We have Suh, Richardson, Coples, Babin playing our new wide-9 defense. When/if IK or Rielly come on, they're groomed to slide right in. With Babin there is no rush.

R1. Brandon Scherff, RT. Oline is fierce now. As in fierce, fierce. Our run blocking will lead the league. Penalties drop once Colon leaves. The offense can finally move forward.

R1. Todd Gurley, RB. Possibly best RB in draft, tremendous value once healthy. The risk factor lets him slide out of top-10. But nabbing him right in front of the Lions makes us look genius as we can allow him to slowly acclimate/heal.

R2. Dorial Green-Beckham, WR. Possibly best WR in draft. With size/speed ratio and a high pointing hands catcher. We have a legit red-zone threat/WR1.

R2-late. Marcus Peters, CB. Top-15 talent. Needs a strong-willed coach to take on his attitude/coach strangling.

R3. Pick is traded to move up for Peters.

R4. Pick is traded to move up for Peters.

R5. Garret Grayson, QB. Could be face of franchise if left to learn on the bench for a season or two.

QB Sean Mannion - Oregon State

STRENGTHS: sports an NFL-caliber frame, has the arm to make every throw and is a classic drop-back passer with limited mobility. When he feels secure in the pocket and has the time to step into his throws correctly, Mannion's touch on intermediate and vertical passes is as impressive as any quarterback in the country. He lofts the ball with perfect trajectory over the shoulder of his receivers and allows them to go get it, demonstrating pinpoint accuracy to lead his target away from defenders.

Mannion has an easy, natural throwing motion and he's well-versed in coach Mike Riley's pro-style offense, which asks him to take snaps from under center as well as from the gun. While he can drive the ball when needed, it cruises, rather than explodes out of his hand. The result is that Mannion's passes look effort-less but there is some question as to whether he has the top-notch velocity to significantly boost his stock this season.

WEAKNESSES: Lacks mobility. Where Mannion can improve is poise under pressure. Mannion is intelligent and typically is able to read defenses prior to the snap. When he's fooled and his primary read is taken away, he has a tendency to drop back further into the pocket, rather than stepping up. Mannion is willing to absorb a hit to complete the pass, but too often does so while falling back (rather than stepping into his passes), erasing some of the zip and accuracy from his throws.

WR - Tyler Lockett - Kansas State

Arguably the top wideout in the conference, Lockett doesn't look like much, but he runs like the wind with sudden footwork in his breaks to create separation before, during and after the catch.

He is a smaller target with a limited overall catching radius and smaller hands that will lead to double catches and him fighting the ball at times. However, Lockett is very dangerous in space, using his quick, decisive feet to sell routes and speed to stretch the field and take the top off a defense.

He runs a lot of vertical and deep routes on tape, including a deadly stop-and-go move - just ask former TCU corner Jason Verrett, a first round pick last month.

He doesn't have ideal size for the NFL level, but will compete to be a top-five senior wide receiver in the 2015 class

OG - Tre Jackson - Florida State

In addition to possesses road-grader size and power, Jackson will surprise with his athleticism and quickness when asked to mirror rushers or get to the second level as a run blocker, and plays with solid instincts and awareness in both facets of the offense.

OT - Spencer Drag -  Baylor

One of the top offensive linemen in college football, Drango enters his third season as the Bears starting left tackle.

STRENGTHS: Easy kick-slide with a wide base and the fluid lower body movements to properly protect the pocket from speed or power rushers. Drango is always alert and rarely caught off guard with a high football IQ and overall awareness to process situations quickly. He has the stone hands to jolt with little resistance, displaying the balance to handle defenders and stay off the ground.

WEAKNESSES: Very few holes to his game, but Nov. 2013 back surgery is a bright red flag and definitely something to monitor. If healthy and there are no long-term concerns, he has the overall ability to compete to be the top tackle drafted when he goes pro.

COMPARES TO: Zach Martin, Cowboys -- Drango has an impressive NFL skill-set as the game appears to come very easily to him.

Why are you backloading the contracts, do you think it is reasonable with all the money in FA floating around that players such as Iupati is going to back load his deal. The top Guards in the league make 10mill.

1. Suh for 12 mill a year, why do you think he signs for 66% of What McCoy, Quinn got. You are planning to sign him for the same money that Atkins got 3 years earlier.

2. Harrison will net you a 2nd, but I don't understand your reasoning that Ells al of a sudden is going to be a healthy player playing 3X the snaps.

3. Why cut Babin to save 1.5 mil, that is cheap B/U money

4. Bradford for 3mill, Please tell me why this makes one bit of sense. St Louis is going to let Bradford sigh somewhere else for 3mill? Who is going to be their QB?.

We have Mo under contract next 2 years if you count the franchise tag. No need to explore trading him until next offseason.

Not sure if this is right but if Mo doesnt want to play ball next year with a reasonable contract and we try to trade him, the only way that would work is if he's willing to sign a new deal with that team, if not the only thing we could do is tag him or let him his free agency. This year if he doesnt want to play ball we trade him under his current contract. If we try to trade him next year, if I'm correct Mo could block the trade by way of not signing a new deal with the team...forcing us to either pay him with a new contract, tag him or let him hit free agency. I'd rather sign him or trade him. Im not really a fan of tagging a player. It gives total advantage to the team.

I just think it would be a horrible idea to cut Coples. Dude has showed plenty of potential. Switching to OLB he should of had less of an impact given a player needs time to adjust... Dude was a start DT at one point. He completely reversed his play from hand in the dirt to standing up bending the corner. let him slim down just a few more puns and give him another year at it. He almost knocked a few half backs heads off last year. And Locker is a no-no... any quarter THAT injury prone doesn't need to be here. Him or Bradford. they could step on a lego and tear their ACL's.

Yeah its kinda of a slap in the face to the player. But Mo has expressed he would like to be a Jet for the rest of his career. And he has a great character. I would take that over Suh's bullsh*t any day.

This team has not shown it can develop DL talent.  That was the old regime.  Rex and Dunbar are gone.  Ellis is hurt constantly and have not been able to remain healthy even on limited snaps.  I would sign Snacks over him all day long.  I also agree with some of the others that cutting Babin and Pace is probably a bit much.  The new regime will have to see where they want to play Coples and going from 3 guys that belong on the field to counting on IK and/or Reilly is more of a risk than I would take.  Signing Brooks Reed offsets that quite a bit.  It will be interesting to see what Bowles and Rodgers want to do with these guys.  The secondary needs bodies, but what they want to do with the front 7 is up in the air.

This is true. If he's looking to be a Jet for life then I hope that reflects in his contract negotiation. Im not saying that he shouldn't get paid what he deserves, more of I hope he doesnt try to break the bank. He's good, but not good enough not to be traded.

Maybe its me but I feel that signing him for 10+ million a year is too much. Anything along those lines I would try to trade him. If he's in the 7-8 million range I say sign him.

7-8 mill sounds reasonable. 10 would absolutely be the limit.

I agree. I'd even say 9 million being the absolute limit. I can't see paying Wilk 10 million a year, though if push comes to shove and they pull the trigger then I'll be with it. Anything above that would be more than ridiculous. Offer him 7 to 8 million and lets see how badly he wants to be a Jet. If he agrees, then bless him by guaranteeing the majority of that money.

Here's what it boils down too folks. If the New Regime is going to be playing a 34 defense, Wilkerson will probably get a new contract somewhere north of 9 mil per. If the defense is going to be a 43, then Wilkerson will probably play this season and a decision will be made between paying him and or Richardson who basically play the same position along the 43 defensive line, which is the Warren Sapp 3T attacking DT next to your Run stuffing NT.

What the Jets have in Richardson, Wilkerson and Coples are 3 players who can all play the 3T DT position in a 43 scheme at a high level. If I remember correctly, that is the same position Darnell Dockett plays for the Cardinals.

Wilkerson is making $7M for 2015.  Why would he take the same over an extension?

Here are the rules:

1) 5 cuts

2) 5 resignings....Just put the cost for the first year

3) You get 5 off-season moves, whether it be trades, contract extensions,  all UFA signings, or a combination of the three.  Again, just what it will cost us the first year

4) Draft to round 5

Information needed for this game:

PROJECTED 2015 CAP: $140 million (go on the low side to be safe)

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/07/cap-could-hit-160-million-in-2016/

2015 JET CAP Space: $41 million

2015 JET CAP WITH CARRY-OVER: $51 Million

I don't understand the need to cut both Babin and Pace

My understanding was that signing Harvin has to wait until after the draft or the forth goes to Seattle.

I don't think Jarret signs for 1.5mill- why do you

Why do you let Harrison go?  and what tender are you putting on him? You are taking a chance on him signing a poison pill contract if it is the 2nd rd comp and I don't think he will get a sniff as a first rd comp.   You would take a chance on the pats giving the 64th pick for him for 4mill a year for three years with the guarantee that he is the highest paid def lineman on the team.

Suh will get at least 16mill per year

Why is St louis going to let Bradford go rather than pay him 3mill?

Maxwell is the #1 corner in FA and you think thedeal is around 7 mil, Likewise for Iupati. The top guards get 9-10 mill

Yet those two guys are getting overpaid aren't they? Just because they're getting someone else's money doesnt mean that we should overpay for WIlk.

That's the foundation of our rebuilding plan: overpay like crazy to extend Wilkerson thus ensuring we have the same lousy roster Idzik stuck us with.
