Jets intrigued by Cards DC Todd Bowles

Looks like we're gonna go after him according to La Canfora. Along with a bunch of other teams I guess. Unlike certain Cimini's in the NY area he's somewhat reliable and actually does have some sources. Is it a smart move to go after another defensive minded HC? I for one want somebody who is going to focus and run our offense. Unless Bowles brings in a stud OC.

Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who has garnered head coaching interest in the past, will be among the hottest names when teams begin interviewing candidates at the end of the season. His work in Arizona, as well as his success as an interim head coach in the past in Miami, has attracted leaguewide attention and the Bears and Jets are among the franchise intrigued by him, sources said.

Some within the Dolphins organization are still ruing not hiring him following his work there after Tony Sparano was fired as head coach. Despite losing a host of key starters this season in Arizona and having an offense that has been very limited by its own injuries -- and having a very small margin for error every week -- Bowles' unit has remained one of the NFL's best. Players rave about Bowles, he has a strong playing and coaching pedigree himself and has very strong backing from his former coaches as well as John Wooten, who heads the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which works with the NFL to promote diversity in the coaching and front-office ranks.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians is operating under the assumption that he's going to have move forward with a new defensive coordinator next season, according to sources, and he is steadfast behind Bowles in his head coaching pursuits. Bowles' ability to interview with teams will be dictated by whether or not the Cardinals end up holding on to a top seed and a first-round bye, and of the various potential head coaching opportunities, the Jets and Bears could end up being particularly attractive to him. The Cardinals host the Seahawks Sunday night with first-place in the NFC West at stake as well as, potentially, the first-overall seed in the conference.

Head coaches are like QBs.  The reason you hire ones that haven't been HC's before is the same reason that you try to find a QB in the draft.  Yeah, most of them stink, but there's always the chance to strike gold.

Not quite the same thing.  There are plenty of quality coaches that have been HC's before...There are college HC's, retired HC's, and a few from other teams...

You may have no choice but to get with a coordinator, but I don't have to be happy about it.

I would like to see them pull out all the stops to find someone that has been a HC.

I understand not being thrilled with the idea of going down the same DC path, but you want to pick the best candidate regardless of where they come from. The important thing is that the next coach takes responsibility for the whole team.  Being on the same page with the next GM would be nice too.

I really don't want another first time HC.....I would rather have a college guy than another co-ordinator that hasn't shown he can handle a full team.

I agree. and unless they're bringing in a big time college or NFL head coach to run the whole operation, they really need to settle the GM position before knowing who they're actually intrigued by.

Very true....I really hope they're not seriously considering anyone at this point, let alone a DC, first time HC.  They should only be concerned with the GM right now..and allow him to pick his HC...Woody needs to stay out of that decision.

If Idzik is staying that's a whole other discussion.

I'm not sure about "plenty" - and that's even if you include those that aren't on the market, e.g. Gruden, Harbaugh, ...  Parcells??

And when the Andy Reid's of the world get fired (which is pretty rare), they have some baggage too.

The same reason that people don't like old retread QBs, I'd rather get a new non-experienced HC (though I agree, I'd prefer OC to DC).

I like this guy.

Former player, who came into the league as a UDFA, he's fielded a top defensive unit despite a lot of injuries, and he did a great job as the interim HC in Miami when Sparano was fired.

Plus he's a local guy. Not a bad coach by any means.

Most years, I'd agree with you. Not this year, though.

When you're firing a head coach, you're generally looking to improve the primary area where you feel that man failed with your next hire. It's why you often see teams go back and fourth between disciplinarians and player's coaches. I think the main failing for Rex has been his failure to be a "complete" head coach. So in this instance, I'd be looking specifically for someone who's been a head coach before - at either the NFL or college level. This isn't the time to hire another guy who'll be learning on the job.

First time Head Coach former DC.

What could go wrong?

After all, it worked so well wither Herm, and Mangini and Ryan, why NOT go to that ultra-successful well one more time, amirite?

Except that Herm wasn't even a DC before, and Mangini was a DC - a bad one at that - for all of one season.

But to your point, there's every reason to believe this will turn out completely differently.

Being a good (or great) HC is more than just being able to gameplan at least half the team (though that doesn't hurt *coughHermcough*). Hell, a healthy percentage of failed head coaches were probably above average (or well thought-of) OCs or DCs themselves.

Someone with prior head coaching experience might not be the worst idea in the world. Successful prior head coaching experience might be even better.

I'd like to have a real HC and not a glorified coordinator. So I don't care if the guys speciality is offense or defense. I'm more concerned with him being a 1st time HC. But I have campaigned for this guy since early October. I'd go for a guy like Sean Payton if he somehow gets miraculously released, I'd even consider Shanahan. But if we can't land an experienced guy Bowles is my top choice.

They need the best coach, period. The best way to accomplish that probably doesn't involve crossing off half the potential candidates before you even start the interview process.

Personally I'd like both departments to do well. But if the franchise is destined to be terrible one way or the other, I suppose a typical loss in the 30-27 range is more fun/entertaining than losing 16-13 with the D responsible for 3-7 of it. Losing sucks either way, but a loss is at least more watchable along the way if the offense is scoring TDs and we're putting up 24-35 points with some regularity.
