The 1st down that wasn't (Pats 1st down)

I know this was discussed in the game thread. But I think it deserves its own thread. I was at the game, so did they show something different or explain it on TV? But late in the game at midfield they showed the first down markers and it looked clearly like the Pats were short.

Except they said 1st down.

Optical illusion? What was the deal?

I was at the game & was home by the end of 3rd Qtr to see it on TV.

Facts: ball was marked short by refs who were BY THE MEASURING STICKS. No one made a call & the stadium posted 4th & Inches.

THE BACK JUDGE who was not near the measurement - ref behind the QB - as he starts back peddling to his position signals 1st down which caused the confusion. Why the OTHER REFS did not contest/correct him is beyond me.

Considering the Bears game, Phins game, etc. I have NO EXPECTATION to get a correct call from the refs let alone CORRECTING a bad call against the Goddamn Jets

Just is sooooooo weird.

After the review I was like, okay they will correct this. Not saying the Jets would have won. Who knows. Just saying, that was one of the stranger things I have seen in a football game.

The camera angle I saw wasn't square to the ball so it wasn't conclusive IMO.

Not knocking you here, but THAT IS WHY THEY PHYSICALLY MEASURE WITH A CHAIN IN PERSON.

What does a TV camera angle come into play for the refs who are down on the field measuring it

I was also confused but apparently the officials and field had it marked as a 1st, and the stadium scoreboard and TV had it as 4th and inches. The explanation is that they showed it on television from a bad angle (which you can see with the picture) creating an optical illusion that it was just short, when it was actually just beyond.

Anyway, I'll just never understand why the Patriots can blow out division leader after division leader all season long, then have to fight for its life against the Jets. It's very annoying and I suspect with the loss of Rex, that will stop. The guy was probably drawing up those blitzes for that game months ago.

The fact we challenged it - they made us USE AN ASSET to correct their blatant mistake - and STILL get hosed over is just consistent with this season.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but certain "things" like this happen to us all the time

Agree with the second half of the post. But first half is incorrect. The ref did not even make the call at the measurement. He walked away n signaled first down after about 10 seconds. Secondly, first camera angle was pretty square. Square enough to negate any error from a distance. I will post pics, but did it really matter? Was anyone really wanting a 4th down here?

Who said the refs used the camera angle? Did they?

I'm just saying that's all I saw and couldn't make an accurate call from it.

So judging by the angle on the chain, this photo is clearly taken at an angle to the left. The end of the chain is where it is, but following the chain back down the field, it angles down the picture because we aren't seeing it from straight on. With that said, it could easily have been just beyond the first down marker. To get an accurate look, this view would have to be seen from a bit more to the right, and from there it looks like the tip of the football would be beyond the marker.

Whether or not the spot was right is another thing, but whatever, I'll take it.

Some jet fans just can't help themselves. It's always the refs huh...never the fact that bad teams just find ways to lose games...

Some just can't admit that common denominator

who you calling bad pal? We are the best damn 3-12 team in NFL history.

The game was a win.

We moved from.the 6 to the 4 in.the draft and with help.could get to 3 next week

You,.OTOH get to watch your cheating scumbags and crybaby QB get smoked again in the playoffs before 70000 arrogant unwashed smelly drunks in.Sucksboro, then have to.spend four hours on the three horse two lane access road and even worse, have to.live in the backwater second rate Boston area for the rest of your lives

First thing I did when I got in the car was call a buddy who I thought would be watching on TV to ask WTF happened.  That and the "TD" call were hilarious, but getting bumped up to no. 4 was nice.

Agree, I saw it a couple of inches short on the screens in the stadium.

Commentary on tv said it was fourth down. Guys on field acted like it was a fourth. After the game, Westhoff said he wanted that official to measure his putts cause then he would stop coming up short. The commentary guys talked about it for a while. And at one point they played it back, in longer detail. It showed the head official measure.. NOT instantly signal for a 1st down (like they always do), then walk off.. then backpedal to his usual spot.. THEN signal. Commentary was confused on why he did it that way and called it a "delayed" 1st down call.

Basically, very strange.

Well, the Pats would not have been stopped by a 4th and inches anyway. Brady is money on a QB sneak when he needs a yard or two. I doubt an inch would stop him.

"Around the time Pro-Football-Reference added the Game Play Finder in 2012, I used it to look up Tom Brady's rushing success in short-yardage situations (third or fourth down, 1-2 yards to go). The results were staggering. Including last season, in his regular-season career Brady is 88 out of 91 (96.7 percent) on these runs, including 56 straight conversions. That's almost as efficient as the extra point."

What Mike Perira said that the view was taken on a severe angle and not perpendicular to the ball placement. You can see in post 15 that the view of the measurement seems to becoming on a 45 degree angle and not directly perpendicular as is "always" the case. Jet players were there, they seen the measurement, it is not like the refs tried to sneak something. Where the ball was when his ass came down was the issue.

96.7 is not 100
