Josh Gordon suspended by Browns

The Cleveland Browns have suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon for violating team rules, the team announced on Twitter Saturday. Gordon's spot on the roster is now occupied by wide receiver Phil Bates. Gordon was suspended for missing a team walkthrough on Saturday, according to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun.

The more significant portion of that Tweet is that Gordon will only accrue credit for five games this season. This means that Gordon only has two accrued seasons to his name, as you need to play in six games in any given season to accrue a full season. The reason this is significant is because players need four accrued seasons to hit unrestricted free agency.

Gordon's contract is up after the 2015 season, meaning he can only accrue three seasons now, making him a restricted free agent after next season. It's worth noting that Wilson followed up his previous Tweet with another, saying that this suspension was "motivated by team wanting to delay his free agency status," citing an inside source.

Whatever the case, Gordon will now end the 2014-15 season the same way he started it: suspended. Gordon was suspended for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy at the beginning of the season, and missed 10 games after his suspension was reduced under the league's revised drug policy. He was originally suspended for a full year.

He also missed two games due to a suspension in 2013, also due to a violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. Gordon has had a couple big games since returning, but will finish this season with 24 receptions for 303 yards and no touchdowns in five appearances.

they can fight for his FA status, they don't care if he actually plays or not

if it was done over his FA status, pretty hardball move by the browns.  could easily backfire tho

Yeah, I definitely think the union will be involved. Suspending the guy for missing a team walk-thru is a little extreme, and also a little sketchy when you consider that that one game voids the whole season for Gordon. I'd be filling out the grievance form.

very extreme.  if the CBA allows it for guys like gordon with about 4 strikes on their record, they may not have a case.  but if drug violations are considered separate from conduct issues, they may appeal it and win

suspended for missing a walkthrough ?

NFLPA will probably get involved

Why do you think this is a union matter? There is a CBA that gives teams that right and this is not his first go round. I bet in his folder he has missed more than one in the years he has been there. Players have been cut for missing practices. Gray on the pats was lucky he was just benched and not cut.

Missing practice is bad, what could be worse to show a poor attitude. Most coaches are not like Rex who tries to treat his players with some leeway even if they have not earned it.

Idiot, heard Johnny foozball missed the walkthrough too.

Yes, and Johnny Dumbass missed treatment also.  http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/24919509/browns-ready-to-part-with-josh-gordon-frustrated-over-johnny-manziel

This just days after saying he had to take football more seriously.  For everyone who wanted to draft this soon-to-be-has-been, be thankful we didn't.  Manziel will almost certainly never amount to anything in the league based on a lack of pro talent, determination, integrity, discipline and, well...everything else you need to be successful at the pro level unless you have gobs and gobs of talent, which he clearly doesn't.

Reports: Manziel Party Led To Gordon Suspension

Johnny Manziel threw a party Friday night that was attended by multiple members of theCleveland Browns, triggering a tumultuous weekend during which several players were punished by the team, according to multiple reports.

Receiver Josh Gordon, who was suspended Saturday for a violation of team rules, was one of the players in attendance, according to cleveland.com.

The Browns also fined Manziel on Saturday for being late for treatment on his injured hamstring, a source told ESPN. Less than 24 hours later, rookie cornerback Justin Gilbert was deactivated for Sunday's season finale against the Baltimore Ravens after missing a team meeting the previous night, a source told ESPN.

Josh Gordon was one of several Browns players who attended a party thrown Friday night by Johnny Manziel, according to a report. Gordon was suspended Saturday for missing a team walk-through.

Both Manziel and Gordon were absent from the Browns' walk-through on Saturday morning, and the team had trouble locating them, a source close to the team told ESPN.

Manziel had to be present for either the walk-through or, since he was on injured reserve, treatment on the hamstring. When he did not show for either, the team had to search for him. Browns security visited Manziel's home Saturday morning to check on the rookie quarterback about his treatment, sources told ESPN.

Manziel's party was first reported Sunday by CBS Sports.

Manziel's punishment came days after he acknowledged he had to take his job as an NFL quarterback more seriously. Gilbert also publicly vowed that he would take his NFL career more seriously.

Manziel, whose unapologetic stance about his offseason partying raised questions about his commitment, said this week he wants to be "the guy" for the Browns, who traded up in the first round to select the former Heisman Trophy winner in May's draft.

Gilbert's absence from Saturday night's meeting also is troubling since the first-round pick is concluding an inconsistent rookie season. Being late Saturday night means that Gilbert was late after traveling with the team to Baltimore. The details are not known, but the Browns give their players free time on the road after they arrive; players are required to arrive back at the hotel for assigned meetings.

Gordon also was late getting onto the practice field Friday and emerged from the team's facility for the outdoor workout wearing teammate Travis Benjamin's jersey.

The suspension marked the end of a disappointing year for Gordon, who already served a 10-game ban earlier this season for repeated drug violations. By being active for only five games, Gordon fell one game short of the requirement for an accrued season, meaning he will be a restricted free agent -- instead of an unrestricted free agent -- following the 2015 season.

Gordon's camp will work to get the wide receiver paid for the last week of the season, which the Browns don't have to do after placing him on the reserve/suspended list, according to a league source, in an attempt to get him status for an accrued season and ensure he will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season.

Gordon led the NFL with 1,646 yards receiving last season despite being suspended for the first two games. Since returning from his league ban this year, Gordon had caught 24 passes for 303 yards. But he also ran the wrong pass routes for former starter Brian Hoyer, who was benched in favor of Manziel. Coach Mike Pettine said Gordon needed to work harder on some plays, and the former Pro Bowler was less accessible to the media.

The Browns (7-8) have lost four straight games and will start rookie quarterback Connor Shawagainst the Ravens (9-6), who are battling for a playoff berth.

Prior to Sunday's game, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam sat with general manager Ray Farmer on the Ravens bench for almost 45 minutes in a lively discussion. It's very unusual for an owner and GM to sit on the opposing team's bench before a game. During the discussion, Haslam was frequently gesturing to Farmer.

ESPN.com Browns reporters Pat McManamon and Jeremy Fowler, ESPN's Adam Schefter and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
