Idzik likely out, new GM could decide Rex's fate.

John Idzik is expected to be fired by the New York Jets after two years as the team's general manager but Rex Ryan's fate as coach possibly could be decided by the GM who replaces Idzik, according to league sources.

Jets owner Woody Johnson could not be reached for comment and a team official says that Johnson has not internally revealed any decisions he is prepared to make.

Ryan cleaned out his desk this week at the Jets headquarters but sources say he has not been told he is out as the team's coach, despite his belief he is done.

While Johnson ultimately could make that decision, one source said the owner remains fond of Ryan and would prefer that Idzik's replacement make the call on the coach. The source did speculate that Ryan could try to persuade Johnson not to leave him in a state of indecision.

Aside from Idzik's imminent ouster, Johnson also is considering other changes in the personnel department, sources said.

To help, Ron Wolf is joining the Jets as a consultant in the likely event that the team is searching for a new coach and/or GM, a league source said. Johnson had already lined up Charley Casserly as a consultant.

ESPN.com's Rich Cimini contributed to this report.

Just shows how pathetically clueless Woody is.

Seriously, you would think Woody learned from the last GM search what kind of a deterrent keeping Rex on the staff can have in getting candidates to interview. Hopefully, Casserly and Wolf show Woodrow the light.

What's the big deal?  You hire a new GM and let him do whatever he wants.

Because it's spineless. Woody knows Rex is well liked by a decent portion of the fan base, so he's letting someone else do his dirty work. That could potentially make the GM job less desirable to candidates. There should be no conditions associated with the coach or GM search this time around.

this is saying it's the new GM decision if he wants to keep the coach who seems to be in line for another job as soon as he is fired. Seems to me that it gives the new GM even one more option

There is no condition.  A new GM will be allowed to retain/fire whoever he wants.  That's why I don't see what the big deal is.

Oh, and this time around, the GM job is much more desirable.  It's just up to Woody to hire the right guy.

When you clean your bathroom do you just do the shower and then crap on the floor?

No. You clean the whole bathroom and scrub the toilet clean of all the dingleberries.

Unless you have no testicular fortitude.

or you hire a cleaning lady and tell her to clean what needs to be cleaned

Yes, you fire all the coaches and all the scouts (even though some might be worth keeping).  What kind of stupid logic is that?  You let a GM who KNOWS what he's doing decide who to fire and who to retain.

How many GMs were interested in this job last year when they were told Rex had to be kept? Can't imagine too many more have popped up over the course of the season. No GM is coming here and keeping Rex. The only reason for this type of move is let the new GM get the blood on his hands for Rex's exit. It's a spineless move by Woody, if true.

All of this crap could be coming from Rex's camp to smear the Jets and make him look like the innocent coach who got fired for no reason.

They forced the new GM last time to take on Rex. They need to just fire him and be done with it. He's finished here. Let it go.

Speculation.  You have no idea who was not "interested" because of Rex.  You're just throwing that out there because that's what you believe was the case and/or you heard it somewhere.

Caldwell went to Jacksonville because the Jets roster and cap situation was a mess.  Gamble would have taken the job, but Woody didn't want him.  Who else??

regardless of what the talking heads say on this board, this is the right move. woodys job is to fire/hire a gm. that is it. period. then step away. let the gm decide what moves he wants to make. total control. if the new gm is worried about looking like a bad guy for firing incompetent people, than maybe this isn't the job for him. some jets fans will accept nothing less than a public caning of rex ryan.

You let Rex be free ASAP so that it doesn't look like they're hokding him hostage. That's not a good look. Just fire him tomorrow with Idzik and be done with it. No need to drag it out.

It is bad for Rex, but not for a new GM.

The view around the league is that it's an attractive job.  The Jets will be able to get almost anyone they want.  It's just up to Woody not to **** this up.

There are plenty of smart nfl people that actually think rex is a good coach. It's actually just a very loud minority of jets fans that think he sucks.

The announcers on the game today both said that they would keep Rex and get rid of Idzik.  One of them also said that Rex was a victim of the deconstruction of the team since the AFC Games.   I think you can make a case for that.   Everyone wants to blame Rex for that deconstruction, but at least in Idzik's case he said right from the beginning that he makes all the personnel decisions off the field and Rex makes the personnel decisions on the field.

He is known as a good coach around the league and he will get another job.  But the team needs a rebuild and you can't have a 7th year coach who is trying to win coaching a rebuilding team.

It's bad PR, it's a bad football decision, and it's a bad business decision.

It's conservatively a 99% chance that the new GM will want to be rid of Rex. Woody should just pull the plug. If he holds onto Rex, and the GM search takes longer than expected, Rex could potentially miss out on other head coaching jobs once the new GM comes in and fires him. Now, instead of Woody getting some money back from Rex's contract, Rex gets to keep all Woody's money on top of his TV money.

Then I'm sure the new GM will do what's right.  There's literally nothing for those who hate Rex to be worried about.  If he's half as terrible as they think the first thing the new GM will do is give Rex his walking papers.

Or the new GM says Rex is the best candidate out there *gasp* and keeps him.

Those dudes just spent the last three days hanging out with Rex doing game prep. A few steaks at Mortons will turn you into anyone's best pal
