GM search process

Recommended Posts

The search process has been different than last time, where it seemed like everyone knew the 2-3 hot names in the market and fought for them.

This year it appears the system is quite different and that the consultants are calling the shots, and thus why the HC before the GM does not seem to be a priority.

According to reports jets are interviewing external candidates - Bill Kuharich (Browns), Trent Kirchner (Seattle), Mike Maccagnan (Houston) and Rick Mueller (Eagles)

Bears are interviewing external candidates - Chris Ballard (Chiefs), Lake Dawson (Titans), Brian Gaine (Texans), Ryan Pace (Saints)

Note no overlap in this list.  Perhaps Decosta and Paton were overlap but both expected to decline.

Both teams are being assisted by the NFL consultants, with Casserly and Wolff (I hear nothing about a candidate being linked to him though) with jets and Peterson with Bears.

Seems like the consultants are dividing up the list of their friends and pushing them on each team.   You figured there should be some overlap between potentially great candidates.  Maybe all the candidates are so/so.

Perhaps the Bills will come out ahead here with Polian/Gamble combo (Gamble used to work with Polian).

Interesting.  We know the Jets are looking for "football guys", are the candidates listed above for the Bears cut from the same cloth?  The Jets and Bears are each interviewing different front office guys from Houston; Maccagnan has the Casserly connection so it makes sense for us, but why isn't he interviewing in Chicago too?

Right, we are interviewing people that have a Casserly connection and they are interviewing people that have a Peterson connection (at least two of them I think).   Pace and Ballard were rumored to be candidates along with Tobin from cinci before the whole process started.   My understanding is that the bears guys are also "football" guys in that they are in the personnel dept. (don't know the Tenessee guy though).

That's right, my bad.  I had read Carl Petersen first, but it is Ernie accorsi.  But the main point is consistent.   First, there is surprisingly little overlap between the candidates being considered for the 2 jobs.   Second, consultants are helping in both GM and HC searches.

I hear Maccagnan is the front runner.   His name is being bandied about by many including Gil Brandt of NFL Network.  Also, word out is Decosta may be open to an interview with Jets afterall.  Woody would throw the bank at him like he did with Caldwell. If Decosta grows weary of waiting for Ozzie to resign, he may have a change of mind.

Jets in Seattle to interview for coach, GM jobs

Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and assistant head coach-offensive line coach Tom Cable, along with former Buffalo coach Doug Marrone, are on the Jets' early list of candidates to replace the fired Rex Ryan.

Johnson flew to Seattle on Thursday, along with consultants Ron Wolf and Charley Casserly, and interviewed Seahawks director of pro personnel Trent Kirchner for New York's general manager position, which opened when Johnson fired John Idzik along with Ryan on Monday. While in Seattle, the trio also will meet with Quinn and Cable. It was a busy day for the Jets, who interviewed Cleveland executive chief of staff Bill Kuharich in New Jersey before they headed to Seattle.

Marrone became a prime candidate for the Jets when he abruptly stepped down Wednesday night as Bills coach. He exercised an opt-out clause in his contract, essentially making himself a coaching free agent. Marrone led the Bills to a 9-7 finish in his second season for Buffalo's first winning campaign since 2004. Buffalo still missed the playoffs, extending the NFL's longest active postseason drought to 15 seasons - but beat the Jets twice. As of Thursday night, it was uncertain when the Jets would interview with Marrone. It likely will occur as soon as Johnson returns from Seattle, perhaps as soon as Sunday. Marrone, a Bronx native, has some ties to Johnson and the Jets: He was their offensive line coach under Herm Edwards from 2002-05.

Quinn also was a Jets assistant from 2007-08 under Eric Mangini. He's also from Morristown, New Jersey, located just minutes from the Jets' training facility in Florham Park. New York also plans to interview San Diego offensive coordinator Frank Reich, but nothing had been scheduled. There is also interest from the Jets in Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Baltimore offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak. The Jets already interviewed two in-house candidates Wednesday: Rod Graves and Anthony Lynn. Graves, the team's senior director of football administration, met with Johnson, Wolf and Casserly for the GM job. Before being brought to New York by Idzik in 2013, Graves was Arizona's general manager for six seasons. He is currently overseeing New York's football operations on an interim basis until a GM is hired. Lynn, who interviewed for the coaching position, was the running backs coach and served as assistant head coach under Ryan. With those two meetings, the team also satisfied the NFL's ''Rooney Rule,'' which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for open positions. In addition to Kirchner, the Jets have scheduled interviews with Houston director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan and Philadelphia director of pro personnel Rick Mueller, but it wasn't immediately certain when those would occur. Two candidates the Jets were interested in - Baltimore assistant GM Eric DeCosta and Minnesota assistant GM George Paton - turned down interview requests, preferring to remain with their current teams.

This is the most important hire we have ! Need someone that's going to be able to set up this organzatoln correctly . All depths needs to be redone ! We don't draft well especially offensive skill positions . This needs to be addressed ASAP. The coach needs skill piston players to win !

For GM, #Jets have interviewed Rod Graves, Trent Kirchner & Bill Kuharich. Rick Mueller is Sunday, Mike Maccagnan is Monday. That’s the list

Out of that list who do you want? Graves is a holdover, Kirchner is pro-personnel in seattle, Kuharich is with browns and used to be with saints (as GM in late 90s) and chiefs.   Maccagnan is with Houston but is not the main personnel guy according to Leberfeld.   Seems like the backgrounds are not as impressive as some of the other candidates last time (Gamble, Caldwell who went to the jags).

Maybe it is a pacakge deal.  We will find out we get Kirchner-Quinn or Maccagnan-Marroney (most likely) next week.

Mueller is from eagles and he looks like he has an interesting mix of experience in all depts that I would favor him.   He also may bring some Chip Kelly guys with him who knows.  And doesn't seem to be tied to a HC candidate as the other ones may be.

I believe Mueller was in NO when Marrone was there.

Yep.  And in order to draft correctly, that person needs an on field game plan for going from 4 to 12 wins.  Are we going to hire a GM that thinks one way, then say, hire a ground and pound guy for coach?  Makes no sense.  And how many coaches know how to set up a whole football organization?  That is why i think you have to go GM first.   None of the current coaching crop have the necessary skills to do  the organization set up.  Coaches' days are long enough.  They cannot run scouting departments while they are game planning.

I want Kirchner, personally. Keep Graves on staff. That's two personnel guys that helped build a couple of monster rosters in the NFC West. If we can snag Kirchner as GM, and seat Graves (same role as last year) and someone like McCagnan (some sort of promotion) under him, perhaps we dump Bradway and truly revitalize the way this team evaluates and acquires talent.

candidates have a say.  they can decline an interview.  we don't know who was contacted

this whole consulting conspiracy is silly.  billionaires use consultants daily.  they know how it goes
