Yankees Bullpen Trades

So in the last week the Yankees traded Shawn Kelley (RHP) to the Padres for 21 year old minor league closer Johnny Barbato (RHP).

Then yesterday they traded minor league starter Manny Banuelos (LHP) to the Atlanta Braves for relievers David Carpenter (RHP) and Chasen Shreve (LHP).

I dig both these moves, first Shawn Kelley is a jag with only 1 year left on his deal, Getting Barbato (who might need TJ surgery) but has high upside with a plus power fastball, above average curve, good control. It's a no brainer. Probably start the year in AA Trenton if his health checks out.

On to the other move. Manny Banuelos who's turning 24 was at one point the Yankees best pitching prospect, but sub par performance and injury has really took a tole on that bloom. He could still become a solid back end starter, especially in the NL, but his size was always a concern. The Yankee got in return a guy in Carpenter, 29, who  is your classic hard thrower, whipping slider guy, a clear upgrade over Kelley in my view. Sure McCann gave Cashman a recommendation, had his best season with McCann behind the dish. Left handed Shreve who is 24 got his first taste of the majors last year and did not disappoint, he's not a left specialist, he can get out both left and right handed batters.

With these moves, plus trading Cervelli to Pittsburg for the LHP Justin Wilson, the Yankees can stock two bullpens with all the options they have. Here is my guess how the pen shapes out baring any more moves (No idea who closes yet though)

Betances RHP

Miller LHP
Carpenter RHP
Wilson LHP
Shreve LHP or Lindgren LHP (camp battle, loser goes to AAA)

Rogers RHP, Whitley RHP, or Mitchell RHP (camp battle long reliever, my assumption is Adam Warren has the inside track for that 5th spot in the rotation. Losers should be starting in AAA)

That's a strong bullpen, and will have many other options stuffed in the minors. One of Shreve/Lindgren, Jose Ramirez, Mark Montgomery, Branden Pinder, Tyler Webb, Gonzalez Germen, Jose DePaula.

Pitching prospects will break your heart. manny banuelos was at one point the crown jewel of the farm system. Injuries derailed his career.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wilson was a really clever pickup. Good arm on a lefty, and maybe not just a LOOGY.

Huge fan of what the Yankees' offseason in general, but the bullpen in particular...What they should do next is trade Webb and some lottery ticket for Welington Castillo and Travis Wood.

What we gonna do with another catcher? We already traded Fransicso Cervelli, we still have Brian McCann, John Ryan Murphy, Austin Romine, Gary Sanchez, Luis Torrens. Wouldn't be surprised to see Romine traded or DFA, no room for him with Murphy having the inside track at backup catcher on the big club and Gary Sanchez playing everyday in AAA.

Castillo is better than everyone but McCann right now. A cheap backup who can hit a little and has starting experience. Could flip him arbitrage style.

I'd take JRM but Theo already paid another former Red Sox player for the job. Romine isn't good, Sanchez needs at least another year in the minors. Huge fan of Sanchez THO.

Rather keep John Ryan Murphy (23 years old) over Castillo (27). Think Murphy can be an everyday catcher. Murphy isnt a former Red Sox btw, Yankees drafted him out of high school.

Prime age with a track record vs. Unproven. While Murphy can theoretically be a starter he profiles best as a backup.

I was talking about Theo signing David Ross to play backup for the Cubs.

I do like Murphy as mid tier catching prospects go.

Not to mention the cost...both in prospects (Webb is the Yankees fourth pen lefty)...and dollars...works in the Yankees favor.

Fully expect JR Murphy to be the back up catcher. The Yankees will hold another "ST competition" where they know the winner before the competition even begins.

I was a fan of Cervelli's but we have depth at catcher and was happy with Wilson coming back. I agree with you, I really like what the Yanks have done this offseason. They had two goals, get younger and get better defensively and they've done just that. As far as Castillo goes, I'll pass.
