Pepper

The New York Jets have announced the hiring of defensive line coach Pepper Johnson.  A familiar name in the New York area, Johnson played with both the Jets and Giants during his 13 year playing career.

Johnson interviewed for the New York Giants defensive coordinator position but was passed over in favor of Steve Spagnuolo.

A return to the Buffalo Bills, where he coached last season was an option for Johnson as former Jets head coach Rex Ryan offered  him a position.  With his old job being filled by former Jets defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, Johnson opted to look elsewhere.

2015 will be Johnson’s fifteenth season as a coach in the NFL and he leaves a defense that was the best in the NFL at getting to the quarterback.  The bills amassed 54 sacks last season, tops in the league.

I'm liking the "Parcellian" flavor to the staff, you have guys who have

either played for him, coached on his staff or were on MIA staff when

he was GM:

Bowles

Rodgers

Johnson

Dorrell

Danna

A Parcells flavored staff won't be "gassing someone's head up" if they have a good game

and allowing them to think they've "arrived"

The Giants from 91-92 were so happy (Initially) when Ray Handley took over. They said parcells and his staff would constantly ride their asses. And it was so much nicer. After their playing days were over they realized how much all that riding had to do with their success.

parcells said in a recent interview that pepper has "a prescence" and is a good coach, but came up short of endorsing him for a DC or HC position so this seems like a good hire

no more camp favorite uncle !!!!

I heard the same thing!!  Seemed like Parcells thought much of Pepper as a coach.

This so important...

Folks kept saying that Rex wasn't hurting the players with that gassing and even attacked Namath when he implied it might be to much....

Great hire.

I may be reading into things too much, but the talk by MacCag and Bowles around learning the strengths of the players you have, and building to capitalize on it, is reverberated in the hirings they are making. This Jets roster's talent core is that DL, and we've hired Pepper Johnson and Kacy Rodgers who have been as impressive working with DL as that splotchy looking guy we lost to Rex's staff.

This Rex thing could not have worked any better, we pick of gems from the buff staff that was destroyed and he brings his 4-12 staff with him...

Seriously.

Not to mention we took the guy many people considered the best coach on the entire Dolphins staff.

I don't think you are.

The Jets named Pepper Johnson their new defensive line coach on Saturday, according to the team's official website. The news comes just a day after the team hired Kacy Rodgers to be the new defensive coordinator.

Johnson coached for the Patriots from 2000 to 2013 before joining Buffalo's staff as the defensive line coach last season. He interviewed for several defensive coordinator vacancies before joining Todd Bowles' staff. Both Bowles and Johnson have ties to former Jets and Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells. Johnson played under Parcells with the Giants from 1986-92, then with the Jets in 1997-98.

Coached for Bills & Patriots, and 16 Years Ago Played MLB for 1998 AFC Championship Game Team

Pepper Johnson is returning to the Jets as their new defensive line coach.

This hire by head coach Todd Bowles for his first Jets coaching staff produces some Green & White echoes from almost two decades ago. Johnson has been named D-line coach 16 years after he last played middle linebacker for the Jets in the 1998 AFC Championship Game at Denver.

Like Bowles, Johnson comes from the Bill Parcells coaching tree, having played under the Pro Football Hall of Fame coach with the Giants from 1986-92, then rejoining him with the Jets in 1997-98. He finished his playing career with 25.5 sacks, 14 interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.

Johnson's first coaching job was with the Patriots in 2000 under their then-first-year head coach, Bill Belichick, who was an assistant under Parcells with the Jets and Giants. Johnson stayed with the Patriots through 2013, coaching linebackers and defensive line. Last year he coached the Bills' D-line.

You are totally correct. That crappy 4-12 coaching staff gets shipped off to Siberia and we get a fresh start. I'm encouraged by the coaching hires so far

Could that be similar to when Rex replaced Mangini.
