What do we do with Harvin?

Harvin's a dynamic player, but not worth his current contract. Not to the Jets, and not to anyone else. Seattle overpaid way too much. So the Jets should play some hardball with him money-wise, and see if they can keep him cheaper. They're unlikely to find anyone nearly as talented as him in fourth.

But if he balks, you let him walk. Curse Idzik, and use that money to pursue one of the big names in free agency.

I was under the impression that Gailey was Bowles' first choice, that the feeling was mutual, and that the Jets were happy to sign him. That he didn't sign right away made me think he was debating some of the financial/internal particulars. Player personnel could very well been a part of that conversation. Sure Gailey has "made the most of limited rosters," but that doesn't mean that he wouldn't prefer to coach a talented one. If I'm two years removed from the NFL, I don't come back to a total junker, I make sure the team has an infrastructure to work with and the resources to build around it. And if I'm Chan Gailey, I'm banging the negotiation table for some say in player acquisition and roster management.

That conversation could have included Harvin, perhaps it was for Spiller, or some preference of QB (later down the road), but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that we're keeping Harvin because of some Gailey influence. He's a playmaker, who wouldn't want him on the offense.

I agree on that. He is a playmaker. but I just don't see the point of keeping him around when we just signed Jeremy Kerely to a deal.. I mean unless Harvin can play outside well. But even then we are still weak at the position.

Chan runs a lot of 4 WR sets; having two "inside" guys and two "outside" guys with a running back in the fold.  What Harvin brings that Kerley doesn't is his ability to line up inside, outside, AND in the backfield.

I'm assuming Decker stays out wide, and a draft pick will compete for the other outside spot.  Amaro can be a big inside presence, but the thought of having a trio of Kerley, Harvin, and Spiller buzzing around could make for a really effective offense.

Cut him...

There are a lot of better ways to spend $10.5mm....

btw. trading for him was, imho, the worst thing Idzik did....

I agree, and it seemed like such a great move at the time. Jets fans were giddy.

I agree. Decker,Harvin, draft pick and Kerely sounds very effective along with a combo of Ivory/Spiller and Amaro having a year under his belt. the Offensive line should be better if we do what we have to to obtain Iuptia and Bulaga ...however you spell their names.

I like Harvin as a player.

With our cap situation I don't mind his cap hit. But I don't want to give up our 4th. Pull a Saints/Vilma and reach an agreement with him - front load the deal so of he acts up we can cut him with little to lose. Cut him, give the Hawks our 6th, and bring him back

Gotta get him to re-negotiate.  Even he has to know that with his injury  history he's not gonna' get 10 mil on the open market.  Get him down to 6.5-7 mil with a few mil in incentives based on playing time.  This team has too many holes to go around creating even more.  With better QB play last season he would've had some huge games.  Off the top of my head I can think of two bombs where he was wide open and Geno missed him by 10-15 yards.  If he's too stubborn and won't re-negotiate, let him go.

Pretty much this. Harvin's too good to let go outright before asking to restructure.

It's a good plan from the Jets side, but they'd have to really show him the money. The Jets are coming off a 4-12 season with no answer at QB. Harvin's value will go down here, just as Decker's value is dropping league-wide. He's probably refusing to take a pay cut publicly because he'd love to get off the Jets.

I just don't see any reason for him to feel an allegiance here. .

exactly. Harvin has no attachment here. He will probably be let go after we ask if he will restructure one more gen' and he says no.

We certainly currently have the cap space for him and he showed big play flashes last year.  Do we want to retain him or not?  When do we have to make a decision on him?  For example if we go hog wild and go after a big name WR in FA can we then cut him?  If we fail on getting an impact player we keep him?

Also what are the cap implications if we keep him this year going forward, we can cut him essentially with no cap penalty going forward can we not?

(I don't get the impression he would be willing to rework his deal for less cash.)

What say you all?  Keep, give up the 4th rounder and move forward or dump him, give up the 6th rounder and use the extra dough on a different player in fa?

I want the 4th rounder. If Percy were a legit wideout, and not a hybrid player I might want to keep him.  I do want to have him but not at the cost of 2 draft slots and 10.5.  He is not worth that.

Percy's baggage concerns me more than anything else. The injuries, attitude history. I don't think he'll stay happy on the Jets.

But the 4th rounder really isn't a huge deal. Sure, I'd like to have it, and you can point to players like Leon Washington or Brad Smith as coming from that round - but they're the best of the bunch, and they're no Percy Harvin. With all the cap room the Jets have, the money isn't a huge issue either. And if they let him go, they're going to have to spend that money and/or a higher draft pick (maybe even #6 overall) on a WR.

Like I said, I'd play hardball with him. If they can sign him in the $6-7M range more representative of his worth, I'd give up the fourth. If he refuses to take the pay cut, I'd let him walk.

If the Jets are hot for an extra pick around the fourth round, they can make an effort to trade down in the first or second.

to be honest adding solid starters from FA to WR,OL and CB and then going and getting a guy like Shane Ray(if that's even his name) sounds like the more complete way to build the roster.

I could live is not a polished route runner), that.  I would actually prefer to get a running back who can split out, like Spiller, to a guy like Percy, who is not a polished route runner and really does not run the ball -- except for reverses and the rare plunge into the line.

Harvin isnt really a true wide out anyway. Sure he can make plays but for his price tag and attitude issues its risky. I know its only a 4th rounder but its a early pick and you sometimes can find talent that fell

... and sometimes you can find a Jalen Saunders.

It wasn't the worst thing Idzik did... but in the top three or four. Shocking how many Jet fans didnt learn from the Holmes fiasco. Harvin is a turd.

I know he's gone but it's still amazing just how bad Idzik was.   I can't believe we were debating the Harvin trade during the season - it was a bad move then and it looks like a worse move now.

If he renegotiates he is absolutely worth the 4th rounder as opposed to 6th. Unless you're drafting Cooper or signing Cobb.

Some of you guys here are unbelievable it's like you're on Let's Make A Deal all dressed up in your farmgirl costume wanting to trade your trip to Vail for what's behind Door Number Three.

There are a handful of good players available in RD 4 in any given year. A handful. Sometimes less than a handful.

You don't let the best and only explosive weapon on your team walk. i wouldn't try cut/renegotiate either, unless you want him going to the pats. and why restructure? that would add years and require guaranteed money. one year pay as you go show me year. let's see what he has and then decide next year.

Yeah but seeing next year doesn't give us our 4th rounder back. 4th rounders are a lot more valuable think people think.

a 4th rounder for a supremely gifted young player (albeit with some red flags) is worth it especially since he is literally the team's only game breaker. you lose the 6th if you cut him, anyway. for the difference of a 4th and a 6th you don't let a harvin walk. if you cut him the pats and maybe others will put in a waiver claim. 10.5 is a lot of money but the deal is crazy cap friendly. you can cut him with no dead money after a year, that's a bet i make 6 days a week and twice on sundays.

I can agree on that. Not like we hit with our 1st,2nd or 3rd rounders anyway.
