SenorGato
I am actually a Gary Sanchez fan. Think he's one of the more massively underrated prospects out there. People are bored with him and boredom leads to frustration. He can hit, and has every tool to be a starting defensive catcher. See him as a RH power bat at C who won't strike out excessively and can take a walk. That with an average glove - even a tick below - is a first division catcher. Lots of velocity in this system, really would like to get one of those two spare lefties (Webb and the kid from the Braves). Not a ton of SP talent, but the Yankees have the best pen depth in baseball. Leonardo Molina was a coup during the 2013 7/2 IFA period. Would have been the #1 guy in that class, but was available later than everyone due to his August birthday. Yes, I do think that hurt him in the publication rankings. Huge upside as a CF prospect. Has Grady Sizemore-esque tools, but might be half a decade away. Yankees had him stateside at 17, so they view him very highly.
Morrissey
Sanchez seems to have many of the same red flags/problems as Jesus Montero had. While he can hit he's had makeup problems and has been sent home for attitude, and while he has a strong throwing arm, I haven't read anywhere saying he can stick behind the dish. A guy I'm excited for is Luis Torrens http://riveraveblues.com/2015/01/prospect-profile-luis-torrens-113464/

A guy I'm excited for is Luis Torrens http://riveraveblues.com/2015/01/prospect-profile-luis-torrens-113464/ I like the way Sanchez came back from a weekend suspension last July. Came back and had one of his most productive months. The bat playing well in AA at 20 and 21 is huge. The Montero comp is one that I consider lazy. Sanchez is the better athlete and defensive player, always has been. They're both big Domincan catchers who mash while being very young, but Montero only ever wanted to hit. W While I haven't read anywhere outright promote him as a defensive C, everyone thinks he can hit and the vast leave the door cracked open for C. Torrents is interesting, but wouldn't say he's a better C prospect than Sanchez. Always worry about SNTS with these really low minors guys. Morrissey
Severino has a smooth delivery. What's his problem?that relies too heavily on his arm and upper body and doesn't use his legs very well. It's not an unfair criticism.
SenorGato
“I’m going tp feel good. I’ve been catching (Sabathia) the same way I’m catching our pitchers right now,” Sanchez said before the game. “It’s part of the development as a catcher — not because CC’s here. I’ve just got to catch everybody like it’s just another day of work.” http://www.trentonian.com/general-news/20140702/thunders-gary-sanchez-embraces-working-with-yankees-cc-sabathia Quotes like this from Sanchez, and the quotes from Yankees personnel in the article, are why I remain optimistic. Catching is just really hard to do and even harder to scout and project, especially at really young ages. I see his problems as a matter of reps at the position. A 2013 piece from YES on Sanchez, then in AA, acknowledged that both Sanchez and the Yankees saw him as a few years away defensively. Nothing crazy for a catcher who won't be 25 until 2017/2018. Posada didn't become the full time catcher until he was 26 IIRC. Rare contact skills for a RH bat with power these days. To maintain that at such a physically demanding defensive position is testament to positive things (athleticism, conditioning, work ethic, pitch recognition, skill level). Guys who have a legitimate chance of making an impact on the big league roster this year: Pirela, Refsnyder and Lindgren, Mitchell.
SenorGato
It doesn't look super pretty and obvious yet, but I think I was right on Gary Sanchez. OTOH, of course I would say that. He is the bat first catching prospect that Kyle Schwarber is not in the sense that I think he sticks.
