The NFL Commissioner and his Inner Circle

The pressure is really starting to build on Roger. He's in a tough place. He will need to come down hard on Pats or Saints, Ravens and others are going to flip. If he fails to do so, I see a new Commish being selected in the next year!

Deflategate will go on, and I wouldn't expect a resolution this side of the Super Bowl. When the decision is handed down, you will likely be disappointed, confused and to an extent angry.

However, this article is not designed to go over deflategate. It is what it is, and I've already made my feelings on it very clear. The Patriots under Kraft, Belichick and Tom Brady are proven cheaters, and as Nick Mangold and Sheldon Richardson put it last night, we can't be surprised to see this kind of controversy around that kind of franchise.

The handling of the situation has come under a microscope, mainly due to the closer personal relationship between NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Goodell has no closer ally within league circles than Kraft, and as Richard Sherman put it, the Patriots won't be punished as long as Kraft and Goodell "are taking pictures at each others homes....Talk about conflict of interest".

When the NFL came under fire earlier this year, it was Kraft who rallied around to drum up support from other owners. It was Kraft who arranged for Roger Goodell's interview on CBS news earlier this year.

GQ launched a special investigation into the NFL commissioner and his very difficult year. If you're in New York or Los Angeles, you can pick up the full story today. If you're based anywhere else in the country, the magazine will be hitting your shelves tomorrow morning.

As part of the feature, the magazine spoke to numerous people within the league, executives, owners, players and agents, and the relationship between Goodell and Kraft is concerning. As one league executive put it, some consider Kraft the "assistant commissioner" due to the sway he has in Roger's decision making process. The article also suggests that many owners resent the preferential treatment Goodell is perceived to extend to his inner circle. One who is referenced directly is New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.

Nobody can deny the financial growth the league has seen under Roger Goodell, but his perceived favouritism towards certain teams will come back to bite him. He needs the support of all the NFL owners, and if he doesn't come down hard on his friends, he'll never gain the respect of his detractors. Don't be surprised if he tries to sweep the whole Deflategate under the rug, while handing down a severe punishment to Woody Johnson for a slip of the tongue.

Make sure you pick up the latest issue of GQ this week for the full feature.

Right on target.

paul allen could buy and sell kratfy 10 times over

these are not stupid men, if goodell tries to cover for his boy, he's toast.  Harry Reid and John McCain are already chiming in.

Roger Dodger turned the investigation over to a 3rd party, you would have to think they will know if he holds back or if evidence is destroyed

god this is better than an opera, lol

This is good stuff - as much as Goodell and the Pats want, this doesn't seem to be going away or losing steam....

This isn't just ESPN or the NFL Network anymore - the national media is running with this and the story has a lot to offer...

As this plays out the story continues to get juicier for the national media...

The question i would ask, who is that third party investigator?  do they have ties to Krafty?  do they have ties to Roger "dodger"?

very accomplished defense lawyer.  I would hope he has the brains to excuse himself from an investigation with a conflict of interest

Do you remember when we had a grievance with the Red Skins in 2001 and Bradway agreed to a Arbitrator that was a season ticket holder for Washington.. :animal0029:

Report: Patriots Willing To Exercise Darrelle Revis’ $20M Option If Needed http://bit.ly/1C8APAb

I'm sure Revis excited to hear that. I say they're bluffing and using it as leverage on the tampering charge. Kraft's buddy Goodell takes NE 1st rd. pick away for "deflategate" and gives them the Jets pick for the Revis tamper. This way Kraft and Belly get rewarded while getting "disciplined"!

Jets get screwed again.

In all seriousness, what's the penalty been for a minor tampering infraction in the past?

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that's where this ends up.  The Pats are "punished" by moving up 25-26 spots in the draft.

League finds Lions guilty of tampering with Chiefs

Posted by Mike Florio on February 18, 2011, 2:01 PM EST

The NFL rarely finds that one of its teams has engaged in tampering.  Today, the NFL has found that one of its teams has engaged in tampering.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the league has nailed the Lions for tampering with Chiefs players.  The Lions will lose a seventh-round pick acquired from the Broncos in 2011, and the Chiefs and Lions will swap fifth-round picks.

It’s a 14-spot jump for the Chiefs in round five, from 23rd position to ninth.

The charges first came to light in December 2010, arising from statements made earlier in the year by Lions defensive coordinator (and former Chiefs defensive coordinator and head coach) Gunther Cunningham.

“[Kansas City] keeps wanting to dump their players,” Cunningham said in February 2010.  “I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys.”

There’s likely more to the story, since the league typically won’t publicly brand one of its franchises a cheat unless the team is caught with one palm pressed against the bottom of the cookie jar while using the other hand to give the middle finger to the team that owns the cookies.

Per La Canfora, the two sides have until February 28 to appeal.  We wouldn’t be shocked if the Chiefs complain that the penalty amounts to a slap on the wrist.  In 2008, the 49ers lost a fifth-round pick and flipped third-rounders with the Bears after San Fran was found guilty of tampering with linebacker Lance Briggs.

UPDATE:  We’ve confirmed that the Lions have indeed been busted for tampering, along with the specifics of the penalty.

meh

that option was negotiated a year ago.  If they want to influence the tampering case they will have to rip that up and go to $22 million.

Why would Allen care, he's rich and is piling up championships. He couldn't care less.

Dude, when Kraft signed Belichcik, a guy who was under contract he should have been black balled by the other 31 and basically pushed out of the league.

Other owners know the deal. Kraft is openly the assistant commish. As long as they get their money every year they roll over and take it in the ass.
