Jets Hire OL Coach Marshall

Jets head coach Todd Bowles filled another vacancy on his staff today by adding offensive line coach Steve Marshall, formerly of the Green Bay Packers.

Marshall served as an assistant offensive line coach in Green Bay last season following a one-year stint at New Mexico State.

In all, Marshall has been an offensive line coach for 35 years, with seven of those in the NFL.  He worked with Joe Thomas and the Cleveland Browns during the 2007 and 2008 seasons which produced encouraging results.  Over the course of those two seasons the Browns rushed for over 3,000 yards as Jamal Lewis led the way with 2,300.  When it came to pass protection, his group allowed 43 sacks, or roughly 4 per 100 pass attempts.

His early NFL resume includes two seasons as an assistant offensive line coach for the Houston Texans during their inaugural 2002 season and held the same title in 2003.  Prior to the 2004 season he was promoted to offensive line coach and filled that position for two years before his run with the Browns. While Houston’s offensive line performance was among the worst in the history of the league, it’s status as an expansion team undoubtedly contributed to their lackluster play.

Marshall’s addition moves the Jets one step closer to rounding out their coaching staff.

Steve Marshall Takes Over Jets' O-Line, Kevin Patullo Quarterbacks & Marcel Shipp Running Backs

Three offensive position coaches have been named to Jets head coach Todd Bowles' coaching staff — Steve Marshall as offensive line coach, Kevin Patullo as quarterbacks coach, and Marcel Shipp as running backs coach.

Steve Marshall, Offensive Line

Marshall's first pro-level coaching assignment was with the Texans in 2002-05. He also was with the Browns in 2007-08 and joined the Packers staff last season as assistant offensive line coach.

Before and during that time he also coached on the college level at New Mexico State, Colorado, California, North Carolina, Texas A&M, UCLA, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Murray State, Louisville, Marshall and Plymouth State.

Kevin Patullo, Quarterbacks

Patullo, a Hillsborough, NJ, native who was the Titans' assistant wide receivers coach last year, will be in charge of developing the Jets' quarterbacks along with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Patullo served three years on Gailey's Bills staff from 2010-12 as offensive quality control and assistant wideouts coach and also was on Herm Edwards' Chiefs staff in '07-08.

Marcel Shipp, Running Backs

Shipp coached alongside Bowles as an intern on the Cardinals staff in 2013, then last year was named running backs coach at his alma mater, Massachusetts.

He was a Cardinals RB for seven seasons from 2001-07, was on the Texans' offseason roster in '08, and spent four seasons with the United Football League's Las Vegas Locomotives, three as a player and 2012 as a coach.

Shipp was born in Paterson, NJ, played his high school ball at Passaic Tech in nearby Wayne, and had an outstanding playing career at UMass.

LOL, I love how some fans put such a label on coaches based on coaches or positions they coached previously.

Not every coach has to be someone who only coached elite talents in the league to be deemed a good NFL coach.

What the **** are you talking about?

lol. JN won. Your prize is Sar and Ray.

I only noticed Ray yesterday here, so far I've seen him call several people stupid, and dig in his heels to argue several points of complete wrongness. It'll be a short stay I'm guessing

Oh really?

Nice spin

You've been nothing short of obnoxious, so chill out with the stone throwing!

And I reiterated my statement.

Yeah, your statement made no sense. Nobody was jumping to the conclusion that the guy sucks. You don't know what you're talking about.

I don't need to spin anything. What are you ******* talking about?

CJ Spiller is not an elite RB. You were wrong to call him that. Telling you that you're wrong isn't being obnoxious. It is preserving the integrity of the word "elite". You telling me I'm stupid for disagreeing with you is obnoxious.

Telling us how "Jets fans" as a whole don't know jack because YOU jumped to the conclusion that we all (2 posters) think he sucks (nobody said this) is again, wrong.

But please Ray, make some more impulsive statements and then lash out at everyone that questions them.

My statement made plenty of sense, and I never said he was "elite" with my first post...

I'll repost it..

Spiller isn't an LT, he doesn't have that kind of millage on his legs

At 27, he would be a great pick-up, and because of some of his injury past, he is still very much in his prime for the Jets to try for a bargain signing for an elite talent, Spiller is still that player.  He injured his shoulder last year, not his legs, and his legs are what we want.

And this was in response to a post where you said he was a sh*tty one-dimensional RB, which I said was stupid, I didn't call you stupid for disagreeing with me.  Again, stop spinning and twisting what was posted, it's all there in the thread.

You're the one lashing out at me, asking me what the "***** I'm talking about and I'm not making any sense.  I'm making plenty of sense.  Spiller is by no means a "sh*tty" RB, far from it, and this is fact.  You may not like him, and that's fine.  But in that same thread you advocate getting an elite RB in the draft, other than Gurley in the first round, while I'm sure there is a girth of RB talent in the draft, to suggest that we could find an elite RB in the middle of the draft is an unknown and a bit of a reach.  Possible, sure, but not probably as you suggest.  I think Spiller would be a great pick up to replace the role Chris Johnson was supposed to provide us last year, and would create a great 1-2 combo with Ivory.  With the RB position being disposable in the NFL today, it's possible Spiller could come at a bargain in FA.  Spiller is also more than a RB, he's great in the passing game as a receiver, and is a PR and KR, he's a multi-dynamic threat, which makes him valuable.

My only opinion is Spiller would be a good pick-up instead of using a pick in the draft, but I don't disagree that we could possibly achieve the same through the draft, it's just more of an unknown.

And when did I say "Jets fans as a whole don't know jack?"  What is also funny is you lash out at me with your alleged "Ray said Jets fans don't know jack" when in that same thread and post I responded to, you put the same label out on Jets fans with the conclusion, "only Jets fans cry about wanting the team to get better..." because some considered Spiller a worthy option, and because you thought he was a sh*tty player...  A bit of irony with your claims against me and your post.

Have to ask, who were you on JI?

Oh, okay then.

You just wrote a lot of words. Not a single one of them say "can't handle being wrong", and yet that's the only meaning anyone will get out of them.

Spiller isn't elite, you said he was. Nobody concluded that the new OL coach sucks, you said we did.

End of story.

Love the hyperbole and spinning

I don't want to end the story

Spiller is not a workhorse, he's not a back like Peterson, Murray, McCoy, at least, he hasn't proven he can be, true.

He does have special ability and is a game changer, he's a multi-threat weapon, can be a weapon at RB as a runner and receiver, and as a returner on ST's, all facts.

He is not a "sh*tty" one-dimensional RB, that is just wrong.

He does come with some injury risks, that is true.

The two posters who commented on the Marshall hiring, responded with their initial response as unfavorable and their reasoning for this was because he coached the OL David Carr played behind, what do you think it would mean?

You continually re-define your statements on Spiller, then accuse me of hyperbole and spinning. Normally I'd give you credit for going with the irony troll technique, but I'm not convinced you realize you're doing it.

As for the Marshall thing, I was one of the two posters that responded before you summed it up for everyone. I said "yeesh", and that means absolutely nothing. You jumped to a conclusion like a elite ninny.

I haven't redefined anything, just more hyperbole from you!

I am Integrity28, you paranoid ninny.

You've done nothing but re-clarify the context for 'elite'. Why don't you show a little dignity and just say, "sorry, what I meant was..."

My response that Spiller isn't elite was cut and dry. Your pants-wetting retaliation is laughable, calling me stupid and spinning, then using "hyperbole " as a catch all comeback.

Also, what do you mean"if true"? It's like 10 posts up in black and white.

You'd think with the time you put into this you'd be better at it.

Good talk.

Next time someone disagrees with you saying a player is elite, and you call that person stupid, remember: hyperbole, spin, back-pedal, and accuse them of being confrontational.

Recipe for success.

I pulled an all nighter last night for my day job and just finished working for today.

Gonna grab dinner and then I'll look at it.

We have a big group here that is getting along really well, I definitely don't want that to change.

The problem is, you aren't just disagreeing, and that isn't the issue, it's your confrontational tone and belligerence.

But you won't get it, guys like only know how to point the finger at others.
