Offseason Plan

KRL

Recommended Posts

The majority of the free agents I targeted are "middle class" players still in their prime
age range (26-28).  I'm not looking to make a "splash" (outside of WR) I wanted to address a
wide range of our needs which would allow us total flexibility in the draft.  In total I
would sign eight free agents:

Cuts

- Pace

- Babin

- Landry

- Harvin: Because I want to keep our 4th round pick.  I would keep open the lines of
communication with his agent as he explored the market.  If he finds his value to be
in the 5-7 million range I would think about re-signing him

Free Agency

- QB: Matt Moore (MIA)  http://www.nfl.com/player/mattmoore/2507282/profile

- RB: C.J. Spiller (BUF)  http://www.nfl.com/player/c.j.spiller/497204/profile

- WR: (If Harvin out prices himself I would splurge for one of the following)

  * Randall Cobb (GB)  http://www.nfl.com/player/randallcobb/2495448/profile

  * Jeremy Maclin (PHI)  http://www.nfl.com/player/jeremymaclin/80429/profile

  * Torrey Smith (BAL)  http://www.nfl.com/player/torreysmith/2495459/profile

  * Demaryius Thomas (DEN)  http://www.nfl.com/player/demaryiusthomas/497328/profile

- FS: Kendrick Lewis (HOU)  http://www.nfl.com/player/kendricklewis/494277/profile

- CB: (I would sign both)

  * Kareem Jackson (HOU)  http://www.nfl.com/player/kareemjackson/496735/profile

  * Robert McClain (ATL)  http://www.nfl.com/player/robertmcclain/1037913/profile

- ILB: Kelvin Sheppard (MIA)  http://www.nfl.com/player/kelvinsheppard/2495229/profile

- OLB: Sam Acho (ARZ)  http://www.nfl.com/player/samacho/2495101/profile

Trades

- On draft day if TB selects Winston I'm trading a 2016 conditional 5th round pick
for Mike Glennon

Draft

With what has been accomplished in free agency and the trade for Glennon I'm now totally
flexible.  For the entire draft I can take the best player available or look to trade down
and accumulate more picks.  But I have to come out with the following:

- OT to be the replacement for Brick

- WR

- Blocking TE

- OLB pass rusher

- DLine to continue to keep our strength strong

Final Moves

- Extend Wilkerson

- Open QB competition between Moore, Smith & Glennon

- Open G competition between Aboushi, Dozier, Winters & Freeman

Glad you are not the GM.

You may not agree (we all have different ideas on how FA and Draft should go) but at least KRL supports his arguments and puts forth a good deal of consideration.

I would have this question for him though.... how much will those FA signings cost (best guess on contracts)?

I'm AWFUL trying to predict contract values.  To me though the big $$$ would go to a WR if we don't sign Harvin

so I would figure 8-10 million for a Cobb/Smith/Maclin/Thomas.  Other than that I believe the guys I listed would be

in that 2-5 million range

I don't see us getting any of those WRs. Maybe Randal Cobb (and thats a stretch), but the rest will be back with their respective teams. I think a better option, assuming Harvin leaves, we draft a WR with our 1st round pick. There is some serious WR talent in this draft too.

I'm not too sure about trading a 5th for Glennon either. Would rather sign Brian Hoyer over Matt Moore let there be a competition between Hoyer Smith Sims and a rookie QB that we drafted.

No on Glennon (no need) and Id keep Babin for depth. But otherwise you're on the right track

I'm not high on Glennon either but for a 5th rounder it's a reasonable short term fix.

We certainly have a need for a starting QB - Are you suggesting we stick with Geno?  If not who are you recommending be the QB next year?

Seems expensive and hard to imagine either of the QB's would be willing to enter to a three way competition.  I personally fall into the take a chance on Stafford bandwagon...He's the best of the bunch and has the potential to be a legitimate franchise QB - IF you can keep him healthy...

I guess you mean Bradford and if he got cut and could stay healthy I agree he would be the best

option.  As for my three way option it shouldn't be too expensive because Smith & Glennon are still

on their rookie contracts.  And Moore shouldn't command more than 3 million for a one year deal

Firstly, I’m on the record in saying – we’re not fixing the QB position in 2015. Not unless we wind up with Winston (who I’m not enamored with and don’t think he’ll be there anyway). We’re gonna have to let Gailey do this thing, and see where that gets Geno. It’s possible a veteran like Moore or a dream scenario like trading our pick to PHI for picks + Foles happens and we improve our situation, but I wouldn’t count on it. The 2015 QB class both in draft and FA is the worst, ever.

I don’t believe Glennon represents anything different than Geno. We’ve already got one 3rd year QB  at a crossroads. We don’t need TWO quarterbacks at the same crossroads.  You don’t fill your roster with carbon copies like that. We need a veteran presence, someone like Moore, Fitz, or Hoyer to as a contingency plan, and probably get a development guy like Grayson or Bridge. See where that guy is after a season of clipboards and practices.

You have to consider the fanbase, and players here. If Geno implodes again, and your solution can’t be to just roll out Geno 2.0, you risk losing a lot.  If your young-gun falls on his face, you have to bring someone in who’ll stabilize the offense. Probably not gonna win you a lot of games, but you keep the offense organized and somewhat comfortable/confident. A band aide if you will.

We can spend 2015 complaining and stressing over the Quarterback position, or we can use this as an opportunity to build around the position. Develop the offense, fortify the Oline and build an identity. Create an opportunity for the next guy to be successful.

Sorry, yes I meant Bradford (thanks) and if we could get Moore for the $3mm I wouldn't disagree with you then.  If you could get them both to agree that they'll be a three way competition it isn't a bad idea.

Not a fan of Moore though at QB

I do like Glennon

I'd like to monitor what happens to Bradford in St Louis as a potential stop gap move to compete with Geno

I like the idea of going after Iupati.  I also believe the Packers have a couple of young FA's OG's that could be on the market, our new OL coach Marshall would have a lot of insight obviously to the players from that OL.

Agreed, KRL is a great poster, the condescending "glad you are not the GM" was unnecessary.

Here's a FA thought

Denver will have to decide which player to put the franchise tag on, if even includes either player, but both Demarius and Julian Thomas are FA's, if DT is the one Denver puts the tag on, I would love to consider Julius Thomas.  A combo of JT and Amaro would be phenomenal.  The question is, do we splurge at WR or TE?  Maybe we keep Harvin and pick-up JT?

Think Moore is going to cost around 6.  He currently gets 5 to be the back up in Miami, and he seems comfortable with the role.

While I understand your point, Glennon is not Geno 2.0, he may be at the same developmental stage, but Glennon is a different kind of QB.  Geno has the added dimension of his legs at the position which is a valuable commodity in today's NFL, Glennon isn't the same kind of threat in that area.

If you spend a 5th rounder on Glennon, veteran free agent QB's are going to look for other opportunities in free agency.  Just my opinion.  The other thing is that even though we have a lot of cap room, the rest of the league has cap room too because the cap is increasing.  I expect salaries to be much higher this off season and these thoughts of adding multiple quality free agents may be pie in the sky.

Doesn't matter. The point is they're at the same developmental stage, both with an equal degree of uncertainty. We're not "taking flyers" at the position when you've already got them.

Most likely if Denver doesn't tag J Thomas he will be a Raider. http://justblogbaby.com/2015/01/26/julius-thomas-says-signing-oakland-raiders-possibility/

Julius Thomas might be the sexy signing , but the smart Gm's going to look to sign Te Virgil Green instead. ( whole a lot cheaper to sign) He was underutilized by the Broncos , and without doubt is the best all round Te the Bronco's have on their roster. I give you lots of credit for putting this together. I don't like veteran running back except for a very few exceptions. I especially don't like oft injured speed guys. So I don't want spiller and would rather see the jets draft someone. Other than that I like it all. Some things are tough because we don't know how much of the OL problem was coaching for example. If the FO and CS feels there is talent but not coaching they probably won't address that area heavily this offeason. WR is another area I wonder about with coaching. That would be my guess anyway.

Julius Thomas is red zone guy who's going to want Aaron Hernandez money. Pass.

Glennon is a much better passer than Geno. Geno has better mobility but passing is more important

I don't feel Moore Smith and Glennon is going to yield a starter who can lead us to the playoffs. I am only interested in Glennon if he's cut.

And no one mentions Clausen. I'd throw him in the convo too. There's Foles via trade, Moore, Clausen, and Fitzpatrick as FA's and of coarse Glennon. Combine Smith and Simms and I hope we have at least 4 of those 7 in camp.

Looks good overall, I like McClain and Jackson at CB (nice Atl and Hou connections) would add Cro in the mix

I would also look to resign Snacks and Jarrett, assuming they are reasonable

Harris to the Bills? I know it is probably time for an upgrade but it would be nice to see a few players retire with Jets, and Harris has been a good Jet (and well payed)

Why is Tampa bay trading Glennon for a 5th rd pick and what do you mean a conditional pick, could it become a 3rd?

Miami I think put a press on for Sheppard, Wheeler will be hitting the streets as soon as Sheppard signs

If TB drafts Winston they obviously think he's their franchise QB.  Therefore why would they keep Glennon?

They have McCown who can start if Winston isn't ready.  So why wouldn't they get a pick for someone they've

given up on twice?  And the pick would be a 5th rounder that could go up to a 4th depending on playing time

Then why keep the guy making 5.25mill over the guy making $650,000. McNown by all accounts was very standoffish to Glennon and not helpful at all, While some of it could probably be laid at Glennon resenting McNown taking his job. I could see Tampa being willing to trade the guy, just not for a future pick. McNown will hit the streets.

Devante Parker reminds me of DeSean Jackson. just slightly bigger. Parker runs a 4.3 and can get up and get the ball. If Cooper is gone I would take Parkers smooth play over White.

Justin Hardy picked up in the 3rd round would be awesome too. Our WR would be 20 times better. Decker,Parker,Harvin, Kerley,Hardy.
