Decker Talking To Thomas

They are as close as brothers so it's no surprise.  But look at the end of the article (it's bolded)
and you see he's hinting at bad coaching for why we lost so many close games:

PHOENIX – Jets wide receiver Eric Decker did some recruiting this week.

Decker spent a few days in Arizona with Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, his former teammate and close friend. The two filmed a commercial for Courtyard by Marriott and during some downtime the topic of Thomas joining Decker with the Jets came up. Thomas is scheduled to become a free agent in March, though the Broncos are expected to either re-sign him or apply the franchise tag to him. If not, Decker thinks Thomas would look good in green.

“I’ve been pushing for the entire year now,” Decker said in a telephone interview with The Post. “It was just another opportunity to talk to him about it. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens. I think it would be tough for Denver to let him go. So whether they franchise-tag him here in the next month or give him a long-term deal, he’s just one of those premier players in this league. If he happens to make it to free agency, I would love to sign him because playing alongside him for four years and especially the last two years made it a lot of fun and made it a lot easier. He’s just one of the great players in this league.”

Decker made the move from Denver to New York last year and experienced a rocky first season with the Jets. The team went 4-12 and never found an offensive identity. Decker injured his hamstring in training camp, an injury he tweaked again early in the season, slowing him down.

The 27-year-old finished with a team-high 74 catches, the most by a Jets receiver since 2007, for 962 yards and five touchdowns. His best game came in the season finale in Miami when he had 11 catches for 221 yards and a touchdown.

“It was tough,” Decker said of his first season with the Jets. “There was a lot of ups and downs. Ultimately, I kind of learned a lot about myself just going through all that. For me, it was just disappointing in myself. I really felt like the hamstring and the leg issue held me back early on and kind of slowed my development with the offense down.

“It was obviously disappointing to have the record we had. Just looking at the first half of the season, there was so many games whether we were winning in the Green Bay game or just a couple of plays away – New England, Chicago, Denver – there were games when we had chances. It’s the little things that stopped us from winning games in the fourth quarter. Those great teams that go to the playoffs, they find ways to win games. I think all that is figured out by not just personnel, but the little things throughout training camp and every day throughout the season. I definitely look forward to amping it up this year and making sure we do everything right and we’re disciplined with all the little things.”

In Year 2, Decker will be adjusting to a new coaching staff. The Jets won’t be back together as a team until April, but Decker has already spoken with new coach Todd Bowles.

“I just kind of introduced myself,” Decker said. “I told him I’m excited to work with him. I’m excited to turn this thing around. Just talking to a couple of guys that have played on the same team as him, it just sounds like he’s the guy. He gets a lot of respect from players and coaches across the league. I’m excited to have him and to get to work this offseason.”

Decker is spending the offseason at home in Tennessee, but he said he expects to work with quarterback Geno Smith at some point before the Jets return to New Jersey.

“I would expect once March gets closer we’ll try to find time to zero in and get a weekend or a couple of weekends to run some routes and get the timing down,” Decker said. “I think it’s important. We’ll have an early minicamp as well, so just to get in that football shape will be important.”

Decker said he does not know much about what new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s plans are, but he has heard about Gailey from Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe, with whom he shares an agent. Bowe had one of his best seasons in 2008 when Gailey was his offensive coordinator.

Decker is hoping his old buddy Thomas might be learning the Jets offense beside him. The two teamed up this week to film a funny ad for Courtyard.

“Demaryius and I dressed up as Courtyard associates and were trying to play some jokes on people, but ultimately surprise them with Super Bowl tickets to the game,” Decker said. “We had a lot of fun doing it. We had some really good reactions. It was just a lot of fun to partner up with Courtyard and do this.”

We often have very different opinions on players/coaches/GMs/80's sitcoms/politics/pulled pork recipes, but I have never felt the urge to give you neg rep. You are really testing me with this one.

lol that made me laugh.

I'd rather pay for Bryan Bulaga and push Giaccomini to the guard spot and solidify that Oline. C'mon, Smith and Streater are obviously not Thomas, but you can't tell me that a Decker, Smith, Streater, Kerley set up isn't a nice look especially with the option to add a rookie in the draft with a now solid Oline.

Streater is the definition of JAG. We already had Streater when he was called "Chaz Schilens".

I like Torrey, I really do. Drafted him in my home league the last two years and his two week 16 TDs helped me win the championship this year. But, it's also caused me to watch him A LOT. He's expanded his route tree a bit, but he is far from a complete WR. If by some chance, DeMaryius Effing Thomas or Dez "Christ" Bryant hit the open market, you open up the checkbook and don't Jet it up by signing a mostly one dimensional WR2 and a street(er) level FA.

Chaz Schilens in any season during his entire career has never come close to putting up the numbers that Streater put up in just his rookie year, and Streater's 2nd year numbers damn near encapsulates Schilens entire 5 year career. Thats just "he's an Oakland Raider" talk you're putting on here. Chaz is a Jag, Streater is far from a Jag.

Smith has had an impressive career. Averaging 900 yards and 8 TD's a season along with being a legit deep threat is what I would pay for. His route running isn't the best in the league but its decent. You can continue to teach that though which he has progressed. You can't teach his deep threat though. Either you have it or you dont.

Besides, we both know that there's a less than 1% chance Thomas or Bryant will hit FA, which I hope they do, that will give us a better opportunity to get Streater and Smith.

That's because all Oakland receivers are the same person.

On 187 career targets, Streater has gone 108-1,556-8.

On 168 career targets, Schilens went 100-1,191-9.

Not a big difference, there. Streater is a fringe NFL WR. He would be our new David Nelson.

It wouldnt be a big difference at first glance until you realize that Rod Streater's targets came in a 2 year stretch and Chaz came in a 5 year stretch.

I'd rather you just neg rep me rather than to trying to insult me with this bullsh*t. lol.

Oh, and David Nelsons best year as a pro is comparable to Streaters rookie year which was his worst year statistically.

Three years for Streater, for the record. The years don't matter. You are telling me this guy is way better, but on a very similar sample of targets, they are shown to be almost identical, like I first said.

That will just mean more money in his pocket.

It won't be his choice. If he doesn't sign long-term, he will get tagged. Gigantic, elite, athletic freak receivers don't hit the open market at age 27.

This. Glad Decker seems to be all in with the Jets, trying to recuit players.....too bad there's no shot Thomas isn't tagged if they can't agree on a long term deal.

This would be exciting. Ain't happening unless Peyton retires though.

That'll depend on what we do at QB. If we somehow shockingly get a competent QB in here, then one could argue that Thomas goes where he can succeed for multiple years, not just Peyton's last year.

Also, if Peyton looks like he did down the stretch, that Denver team is done.

So you think Thomas will sign a long term deal ?? Manning may very well retire now or even next year the guy cant throw the outs anymore and  with all the ducks he threw up last year he may very well be having an issue griping the football due to nerve damage. The arm strength is gone ...Thomas has to know this and may very well walk.

Funny, when Demario Davis said the same thing about not practicing hard enough and not being disciplined he was attacked for questioning the great Rex Ryan. It was obvious the team was under prepared week after week.

If we could find a way to pull off a miracle and land a legitimate QB via trade or someone getting unexpectedly cut... Decker could help convince Thomas to sign here, especially if Maning retires. But with just Smith on the roster combined with the possibility of a rookie won't attract any high end free agent WR's .... Period

Sign Bryan Bulaga

With the offensive line coach from the Packets joining the staff, I am hoping this could make theJets attractive for Packers OT Bulaga to sign. Signing him should, IMHO, be as big of a proprity as signing a CB or another WR, as Brick's play has declined a bit, and the rat of our guys besides Mangold are either young or mediocre (Breno).

I think he would add 400 more yards to Ivory's season total, and add some much need protection, especially given than Geno could very well be the starting QB next year. I am praying that he's available.

Finally someone who really gets the point of the article.  Of course it's a long shot to get Thomas but the big thing

is Decker confirming AGAIN the fact that the team wasn't properly prepared.  That's three players that said the same

thing (Mangold, Davis & Decker) and Vick said he hadn't prepared properly when he went into the SD game.  Does

anyone else recognize a pattern???
