I can't help but wonder if the reason he isn't playing now is really because he came out of the closet before being drafted???? If he could actually help the Jets and contribute to a championship run, I would want him on the team. Hopefully he gets a legitimate shot to compete somewhere. Im not a hater, dude looks like he can play football...I just hope he keeps it football. If the media wants to ask him something regarding his personal life his answer should be "I'm at work". Undersized, only fits as a rush end in a 4-3 and not a key contributor on specials. the michael sam story is that he's not very good at football. maybe the only reason he got drafted at all was because the league didn't want to get sued if he didn't. Vinny16 Posted February 10, 2015 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Sam just isn't that great of a football player, that's why he's not on an NFL team right now. In the 2013 season in which he won the defensive player of the year in the SEC (or was it co-player of the year, can't remember), he had 10.5 sacks in the regular season. That's what people saw when he was voted into that award at the end of the year. If you actually look at the statistics, most of those sacks came against fairly weak competition. Six of those 10.5 sacks came in Week 4 and Week 5 against Arkansas State and Vanderbilt, respectively, and both of which Missouri absolutely crushed. He got another 3 sacks against a Florida team that went 3-5 in the SEC and 4-8 overall. Against good SEC competition that season, he managed just 1.5 sacks, with 1 against South Carolina and a half sack against Texas A&M towards the end of the regular season. Just looking at his stats from that season, against good SEC competition (which is a decent barometer for what one will do in the NFL, or at least the best we have when judging college recruits) he tended to disappear whereas he played much better against decidedly weaker competition. I'm going to handle these questions one by one, because I don't think the answers are obvious at all and the gentleman presents some serious inquiry here. 1. No. This is not to show that he's interested in playing in the NFL. He is doing this because he doesn't want to play football this season. 2. No. It's not to show off his athletic ability. That is not what things like this are for, nor why players do them. 3. No. He does not plan to impress NFL teams. In fact, it's the opposite. win4ever Posted February 10, 2015 Share Posted February 10, 2015 The very reason why this thread exists in lieu of the other players that may have applied is why he's probably out of football. It's not that he's not an NFL caliber player, it's just that he's not worth the trouble because he's not a difference maker. 1. The media pressure is immense with him, pretty much every move he makes, every move the team makes around him is going to be reported, very similar to what we went through with Tebow. "Hey, Sam beat his blocker today twice in a row, why was he taken out?" or "Coaches seen yelling at Sam, singled him out, why? His play or something more?" Stupid story lines like these would start to creep up to the point that you have to treat him like royalty. And his play on the field wasn't worth that much microscopical attention. 2. To be a barrier breaker, you have to be exemplary. You hear all these stories about how much pressure Jackie Robinson was under to perform well when he first broke into the league, because if he wasn't great (and just average) then the circus that surrounded him wasn't going to be worth it. He had to be great, he had to be a star, or else it was going to fail. It's by no chance that the color barrier was broken in baseball by a star. Sam, isn't a star. I think he played the timing of this extremely wrong. There were some buzz that he may have fallen into the mid rounds before new broke about his sexual inclinations, but it wasn't projected to be this tough. I think he over-estimated his value after winning SEC defensive player of the year (I think no one who won the award had been selected lower than the second round I believe, not 100% sure) so he felt he had the name to come out, and it backfired. He was much better off keeping it quiet (teams doing their research would find out, but no team would be stupid enough to disclose that kind of information without risking media and fan backlash), hope to produce in the NFL, and THEN come out. Had he established himself as someone important to an NFL team, all of this would've worked out better. 3. There is an extreme risk a team faces from a PR standpoint from taking on Sam. It's not all rosy from a PR standpoint at all, about how the team is being progressive. Half the team is composed of meatheads like Incognito that don't really know political correctness. Imagine the backlash if someone like Incognito kept harassing Sam? No one really even knew who the heck Jonathan Martin was, before the whole incident, and that became national news. This guy is already in the national spotlight, something like that comes along, and it's a PR nightmare. Coach under scrutiny for letting this happen, GM an idiot for bringing on whoever did the terrible deed, and the owner ashamed that his team resorted to such methods. The Rams took a shot at him, and the media attention was overwhelming, and that meant anything that happened to him were going to be tied back to the Rams. In this social media age, teams are having trouble trying to keep their knucklehead players from creating controversy, and this is going to be a whole lot of new headaches.
