Kevin White

So i finally committed a morning to watching what I could find on White... impressive, but i'm not putting him over Parker. I can't say for sure that he'd be anything more than a mid to late RND 1 prospect on my board.

-Good to great jump ball artist

-played his best against tight man coverage. often gets decisive separation. When he gets behind his man, it's over.

-tracks the ball OK, but not elite in that department.

-contested catches were 50/50, especially when a DBs hands were all over him. drew a lot flags, but also dropped balls when a DB attacked the catch like NFL corners will.

-great first step, doesn't let the corner dictate his positioning. finds space.

-better outside than in. Decker clone in that area at times. Missed a number of throws between zones though. seemed to lose track of ball between LBs and Safeties.

-YAC production was noteable but nothing jaw dropping

-didn't look all world against an off man/zone scheme. doesn't play through coverage over the top well. Watch the Texas game.

-willing and capable blocker

-At times, i felt like i was watching Deandre Hopkins on steriods, once in a while though, I wondered if he'll be the next Reggie Williams.

Final thoughts; an A-list WR prospect who has the ability to take the top off a defense and force teams to account for him every play. I don't however see the kind of domination you'd like from a franchise WR like Julio or AJ who possess the ability to take over a game. He does a lot things that we already get from Decker. His ceiling may be someone like Jordy Nelson, but his floor could also be a glorified Donte Stallworth.

Parker will be the best WR in this draft book it.

Jalaen Strong may have something to say about that.  I think that kid is going to be a true beast.  I like Parker but he has to do a better job of coming down with both feet in bounds on sideline and endzone passes.  He hasn't seemed to have learned the art of dragging his back foot.  Maybe it is just an aberration, but I seen several examples of him coming down with just one foot in bounds and that won't work in the NFL.

I'm presently doing my homework on Strong, whom i had as the #4 WR in January.... I'm not done with all of the games yet, but he's trending upwards.

All that said, he couldn't touch Parker.

You can't be serious; he can't touch Parker?  Listen the degree of separation between Cooper, Parker, White and Strong is just degrees.  All depends on who drafts them, what system they play in and of course, who is throwing them the ball.  Strong is the very definition of BEAST.  The guy is a taller, maybe faster version of Anquan Boldin.   Believe me, he will be just as good if not better than Parker when it is all said and done.   He could turn out to be the best receiver in this draft.

I gotta tell ya JB I usually don't agree with Paradis, but he's right.  DaVante Parker made Teddy Bridgewater a 1st rounder.  Now understand me, I am not saying that Bridgewater isn't a quality QB, but he was special when he was throwing to Parker. Checkout Bridgewater's tape  when Parker was hurt and when He played and tell me you don't see a different QB.

DeVante Parker is special.

I like White, but I don't think he has the upside of Cooper/Parker.  Those two to me are 1 and 1A.

The problem with White really is the competition he played against.

Alabama game was a nice game tape, but he made some really contested catches in that game, but it wasn't like he was just beating them with speed and getting open consistently.  Alabama finished the year 58th in the country in passing yards allowed per game.

Alabama (58th)

Townson (I couldn't find a ranking on them, since they are in the colonial league, I assume they aren't that great)

Maryland (78th- I guess losing Dex was just too devastating for them)

Oklahoma (117th- total of 125)

Kansas (86th)

Texas Tech (95th)

Baylor (107)

OK State (110) He got shut down in this game

TCU (75) Got shut down by other Kevin White

Texas (11th) He did very well in this one considering the ranking

Kansas State (64th)

Iowa State (119)

Texas A&M (80th)

So in all, he really faced one stud team that was great against the passing attack.  So I ended up watching the tape on him in that game, and Driggs was lined up against him, and he wasn't doing much on offense besides a short curl route (which was predictable enough that Driggs jumped it for an easy INT once) and bubble screens.  He wasn't getting much separation from Driggs at all, and almost all his curl route catches seemed to be when Texas was in zone.  For a high catch game (16/132) it just wasn't that impressive.  Two of his longest catches and three catches overall came when the game was down to the final minute and it was already well over, and even then I didn't see much separation.

He could be a good possession WR, but I don't think he's in the same class as Cooper or Parker.  He's much closer to the Strong prospect level than those two, IMO.  He got off to a great start against Alabama so the hype was on him to start, but I just don't think he warrants the upside to pick him in the top half of the first round.   And just to clarify when I mention the other two prospects, those guys get very good separation from their CBs on their routes (and none of the three played with a stud QB, albeit White played in the best system for stats).   I think those levels of separation are very important in the NFL, because those gaps are going to be even closer.  I just don't see it consistently enough with White to say he can be in the Parker/Cooper range.

Talent  wise the best receiver in this draft is Dorial Green-Beckham but he has off the field issues.  So because of this Jalen Strong is not far behind. They would be my top 5 talent wise.  After these two, also mid 1st round talent are Parker and Smith. Both are different with one a big receiver and the other a quick receiver.  Also I feel there are three other late 1st round talent in Hardy who is my number 5th best receiver and right behind him is Tyler Lockett who will be the top slot receiver like Cruz and then followed by Cooper who is a safe pick with good hands and a good route runner.  Just missing 1st round but coming early in 2nd is Sammie Coates and Kevin White who replicas of each other. Same size and good hands but sometimes disappears in games.

Surprise player who will be real good is Justin Hardy teammate and other wide receiver in Cam Worthy. He is a big receiver with great hands.

Those who think Parker and White are better than Coop

Coop dominated as a frosh and he has never had a stud QB throwing him the ball.

People trying to be contrarians trying to sound smart. I think Parker is a nice Hakeem Nicks style of receiver but he's not a #1 in the nfl like Cooper.

Only way I'd use the pick 6 on Parker is if Winston, Cooper and Scherff are all off the board which is not impossible.

Like Stephen Hill?

Not saying he's Stephen hill but the only WR I use the pick 6 on is Cooper.

White played 2 yrs at Lackawanna JC and then 2 yrs at WVU, he had 1 great yr..his senior yr in the defensively challenged Big12

Yes he had a good game vs Bama, But it was 1st game of yr and Bama's secondary was not there strength.

Coop dominated as an 18 yr old in SEC

Mayock says White has higher upside. After Stephen Hill I'd be terrified of touching a WR who had one great year and has great combine #'s. Stick with the sure thing Sherff and sign Cobb or Crabtree.

I can't be serious? You're talking about two RND 1 WRs... the fck would I not be serious? if I was throwing Dezmin Lewis from Central Arkansas in the argument, then you could run your mouth all you want.

I watched both guys. White is not a complete receiver...yet. He may turn into one, but he struggles in a couple of areas. Parker plays like Brandon Marshall and Dez Bryant.

Okay tough guy, don't get your panties in bunch; we shall see.   Mayock believes White has a higher upside than Cooper and is on several mocks projected to go before Cooper to the Raiders at 4; those same mocks don't have Parker going before 10, but what the hell do they know, right?    If you really think it is not even close then you are delusional, sorry.

You can only play who is on your schedule; when he played tougher competition he excelled.  Sorry but I won't hold that against him.  Jerry Rice played for Miss. Valley State and he seemed to have a pretty good NFL career.  Cooper is more polished and is probably the most NFL ready receiver but doesn't mean he will be the best receiver from this draft.

Oh please, Mayock had C. Patterson above Keenan Allen and Deandre Hopkins. He's a draft wizard no doubt, but his word is not law. You're the one who said "You can't be serious".. not me. So spare the tough guy remarks. Watch White in the Texas game then talk to me. That's just one example. Some evaluators are looking at the upside and going all in, ignoring the cause for concern. You could point to any of the top 4 WRs and make a case for that particular individual ought to be #1. All things being equal, DGB is clearly the best prospect, but all things aren't equal, and therefore in my books, Parker is at the top.

I know this much.  Marcus marriota being on the board at 6 could really be great or a total disaster for the Jets. Great would be using him as trade bait for multiple picks .

I am having a hard time deciding between the sack artist in Ray and either Parker or White.  When it's all said and done, I will probably take the sack artist.

Who's going to get him involved in the game. Everyone wants Geno gone, and behind him we have what exactly. get someone to protect whoever the QB is, or to put the opposing QB on the ground 1st.

I would have no issue with White or Parker. I would just do it differently.

DGB is going to be available in the 2nd and maybe the 3rd.

Jake Fisher will be there in the 2nd and maybe the 3rd

Danielle Hunter will be there in the 2nd and maybe the 3rd.

Hunter and Fisher need a Red Shirt yr in the pros.

Like I said, Marriota can really screw up our Board .

So we should not go after a good WR because our qb sucks and literally all the qbs on the market suck even more? Wasn't that the logic Al Davis used in 2007 when passed on Calvin Johnson for Duhmarcus?

I never said that. What I said was I go after premium positions 1st. Wr  is not a premium position, because that position depends on another position to be relevant.

You mentioned Calvin Johnson, and in asked you, what has the Lions won with their 100mil dollar WR and their all star QB ?

In the NFL, you throw to score points, but you run the ball to win games.

I would not have drafted Jamarcus with a 7th round pick. I saw that kid play at LSU and I couldn't believe he was the 1st pick of the draft.

Here's one for you.

Everyone is going goo goo ga ga over Dante Fowler Jr. Here's what I see. I see a kid who runs fast, has strength at the point of attack but has no control of his body. He's a 43 DE who will get killed playing OLber if he's asked to play in the soft zone.  Keep him at the LOS, and he's a productive player.

Who is the stud WR on the patriots  last yr ?

Who is the stud WR on the Seahawks 2 yrs ago ?

Who was the stud WR when the Giants won those SBs with Tom C  ?

It is not a premium position, but a complimentary position.

it becomes more than a comp position when you have sh1t for QB

Do the names Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Plaxico Burress ring a bell? Hey if you have the best qb and/or Rb in the nfl I guess you don't need a Percy Harvin to play well in the Super Bowl.

Offense is not what is holding back the Detroit Lions from taking the next step, that team can score points at will.  This is a really poor example if your point was to say WR is not a premium position.  The Detroit Lions are a MUCH better team because of Calvin Johnson.  No team is going to win anything without a QB or a decent defense.  However, you don't make your QB better by passing on elite guys like Calvin.  Guys like that can help a team ENORMOUSLY.

As far as those other teams you mentioned in your other post...

  • The Hawks had an unreal defense, QB, and running game along but still had help from having a dynamic playmaker in Harvin during that game.

  • The Patriots have one of the best QB's of all time in Brady throwing to Rob Gronkowski who absolutely dominates and is just as valuable as a stud WR in that system.

  • The Giants had Plaxico Burress in his prime, Victor Cruz, and Mario Manningham was no slouch in his time with them.  By far the worst team to mention as an example.

Is who is throwing these guys the ball important?  No doubt.  That doesn't make them the "complimentary guys" though.  Its very rare that you find a Brady, Brees, or Rodgers, etc. who can win a super bowl by making average guys into superstars (I left out Manning considering that he has worked with at least one all time great WR his entire career) and for that I consider them both "Premiun" positions.  Calvin worked with absolute sh*t prior to Stafford and put up unreal numbers.  The 2008 Patriots only went 11-5 because Randy Moss made Matt Cassel look lke a really really solid QB.  Josh Gordan did the same for Brian Hoyer in 2013.  These WR's are players who can change a franchise.  There is almost no QB out there who can do it on their own and the only ones who might be able to, are not available.

Guys, you misunderstand me I think. Yes, WR is a complimentary position, but I am not saying it's not an important position. Every position is important on a football team, but there are some that are far more important which I refer to as the premium (give huge cap dollars to ) positions.

At the draft this April, the Jets may have a choice of Shane Ray, Dante Fowler Jr , Scherff ( who I believe is an NFL LT)  Collins, Cooper,  White or Parker at pick 6. If I am picking I am taking one of the Pass rushers and I am not looking back.

In the NFL, a player who can put the QB on the ground or force said QB to throw the ball before the play develops, is IMO 3 times as important as a WR. A player who can protect the blindside of the QB and open holes for the running game  is far more important than a WR. The reason I am taking the Pass rusher is I believe I can get that LT prospect in Fisher later in the draft while I may not be able to get that edge rusher quality later . The Fact that we have Ferguson who can't be cut or traded this season aids in my selection.

IMO, what the Jets lack at WR is dependable top end take the top off a defense type speed.  Harvin showed what that can add to the offense, but his salary is cost prohibitive IMO. Dorsett from the U or Devin Smith from Ohio State is what they need or a player like that.

I am coming around on this Devin Smith character .
