The history of Jets QBs. Man it sucks

it's why we've never been a consistant winner. We had Vinny in 98, O'brien in 85 and 3/4 of 86... and crap since.. 30 years with 2 good seasons of WB play, pathetic

Exactly.

Pennington was ugh, and it's a sad pathetic thing that we have to argue over whether or not he was the 3rd best QB we've had in that stretch, or if 9 games of Brett Favre on viagra was better. Pathetic.

The worst thing, is that at times we had real good teams and a better qb would have put us over the top. During the Richard Todd years, we had a great team on both sides of the ball, and he was crummy, even with the luxury of throwing to great receivers like Wesley Walker.  For OBRien to be on the list of our good qb's, is pathetic. The man never had a rushing TD -  he just wasn't wired right. Pennington was a leader of men, at least. Farve doesn't count. Ironically, we have to blame our  only great qb, Joe Willy Namath a little for this ineptitude: he personally touted both Al Woodall and Richard Todd, thereby wasting superbowl talented squads

Just had a vision of QBs being handed out at the deli counter, and our number getting called and Icky Woods yelling "COLD CUTS!!!"

lol... the colts are ******* unreal ... they had the #1 pick when the best QB prospects of the last 30 years were available... Elway, Manning, Luck...

I remember as a teenager sitting in NYC watching the draft in person-everybody around me(me included) chanted for Marino a no brainer to even the casual fan and the jets go and select F'n Ken Obrien to the dismay of everybody there-I had an equally sick feeling watching the Jets take Kyle Brady when everybody in the building was screaming for Sapp

Yeah, it's pretty improbable that they luck into that spot at the right times.

Almost as improbable as us having 20+ turnovers from the QB position, no matter who we have playing it, going back a decade.

While I am with you on the passing of Marino in the 83 draft, He was no Marino, but he was not that bad a QB. If he had an offensive line that could keep him upright I believe he would have made a bunch of JET fans list his as 2nd best after Joe Willy. He probably threw one of the prettiest and most accurate deep balls of any QB that the Jet's have ever had.

O'Brien wasn't a bad QB. Not Marion but not bad.

Jeff George also. If his head wasn't such an impossible douche who knows what his career might have been. Certainly on draft day he was thought to be a lucky lottery pick with that arm, and a more highly thought of prospect than anyone coming out this year (or last year, or the year before that).

We've certainly never had an all-time great.  Namath barely qualifies IMO, more flash and pomp than substance.

Ken O'Brian, Vinny T. and Chad were all perfectly fine QB's for their era.

Boomer, Sanchez, Todd were all acceptable enough.  Average guys, JAG's.

Yeah, the rest.....not really worth mentioning.

Makes one wonder if we're the worst franchise in history for having good QB's.....

EDIT:  I can't imagine how good O'Brien, in today's NFL, could have been.  He was an amazing pure passer.  He was just a statue behind a sieve of an O-Line.

Seems a recurring theme, we get a guy with some real potential (O'Brien) but he gets beat to death.  We get another (Pennington) and he get beat like an egg.  We get another (Sanchez) and he gets beaten and becomes a pussy afraid to scramble or take any hits.

We've really had some of the worst QB's around over the years.  Sad.

Pennington was always going to fall apart, he's a woman in physical makeup and approach to game. But 100% true on O'Brien. Guy would've been amazing with today's rules. Him and Montana were the only guys with +60% completion % back in the mid 80's

Sanchez was never average. He's been a mediocre disappointment his entire career.

In Marino's 2nd year he completed 64% of his passes plus he passed more then Kenny.. And I know Dan Fouts was in the 60% range in the 80's as well.. If I checked I could probably find more but you probably grew up when Kenny was the QB so I understand.. :winking0001: And the O-line was never a problem for Pat Ryan, Kenny's problem was lead feet and a slow release..

That's what comes from passing on HOF guys like Marino, Favre, Peyton Manning etc.... The Jets seemingly don't know what a good QB looks like so they keep getting it wrong. Even the FA QB's the Jets have gotten over the years leave a lot to be desired. Pennington - if he could have stayed healthy - would have been the best since Namath.

The Jets did a horrible job drafting and selecting linemen in the Walton era. Guys like Dave Cadigan and Mike Haight simply weren't good pass blockers so O'Brien took a lot of sacks. Plus, he had poor footwork in escaping the pocket. So slow. He had a gun for an arm though. It's too bad they never drafted an O-Line for him.

Been to the playoffs 7x in the last 16 years and have been to 3 AFC Championship games. It's not as dire as you're making it.

If you decided to test reality and chose to jump aboard this gang green train in the last 3 years than yes maybe it feels bad currently... But knock this sh*t off already.

Bills haven't been to the playoffs in the last 16 years. Other teams have It worse than us by far.

Fair enough.

but as currently constructed we are barely better than an expansion team.

Yeah if he played today he would never have gotten the jitters he had back in the day where he would just fall to the ground as soon as he saw the defense and then realized his line couldnt block anyone. He would have been way more confident in todays game. If Marino got selected 5 spots ahead of O'Brien, O'Brien probably never gets the same dislike he got through the years. Being in the same division as the guy who i probably the best pure passer of all time and fans thought was going to the Jets was a no win scenario.

Marino in todays game...forget about it. Arguably the best football player I've ever seen.

1984 was probably the best season at QB ever, all things considered.. Still Feel like Rodgers is the best I've seen.  He's a more consistently great passer then Marino, in worse condititions,  and when you consider the mobility advantage he has it's a no brainner

Last year I said we should take three QB's since we had 12 picks.  One early, one middle, one late...keep the best and cut the rest.  When I was a kid it didn't seem so bad to say "Man, our last three or four quarterbacks have been pretty bad".  Now that we're up to roughly 20 of our last 22 I'm tired of the "take one guy every four years" approach.  It hasn't worked in decades, should've tried something different.

As much as some people hate the idea, Foles or Glennon, in two or three years, could be one of the best quarterbacks this team has ever had.  Ugh....
