13 players the Jets should target in free agency

With the NFL Scouting Combine in the books, the professional football worlds turns its focus to that three-ring circus known as free agency.

It officially begins in exactly two weeks. On March 10 at 4 p.m., the 2015 NFL league year starts, and so does the free agency period.

From March 7-10, teams can negotiate with the agents of pending unrestricted free agents. However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4 p.m. on March 10.

The Jets have plenty of needs they could address in free agency: quarterback, running back, wide receiver, offensive guard, cornerback, safety and outside linebacker/edge pass rusher. They might need a new middle linebacker if their top in-house unrestricted free agent, David Harris, signs elsewhere.

The Jets' new general manager, Mike Maccagnan, has promised that they will be "very active" in free agency -- unlike last year under John Idzik.

In terms of his specific approach to free agency, Maccagnan recently said this: "Our goal is to ideally fill some of our needs via free agency, which will allow us to be a little more flexible in the draft, in terms of looking for the best player available. Building through the draft is ideally what I'd like to do."

Idzik's conservative approach left Maccagnan with plenty of money to spend in free agency. The Jets are projected to have the NFL's fourth-most salary cap space when the 2015 league year begins -- $51.198 million, according to a projection by overthecap.com that assumes a $143 million per-team cap. The official cap will be announced any day now

Plus, the Jets' $51.198 million in cap space will grow by $10.5 million if they cut wide receiver Percy Harvin. That's how much he is due to earn next season, in non-guaranteed salary. The Jets are still evaluating what to do with Harvin. They have a little less than a month to decide.

So, which players should the Jets target in free agency, as they try to break through in Year 1 under head coach Todd Bowles and make the playoffs for the first time since 2010?

Scroll through the photo gallery at the top of this post for some thoughts on 13 pending free agents the Jets ought to focus on. This isn't meant as a definitive list of all the free agents the Jets will pursue. It's just some suggestions for players worth looking into.

It's a slideshow. They can eat my dick.

Hate those effin' 'things.  Just put the damn thing on one page and let me scroll down...waiting for every comment to load page by page is idiotic.

I'd cut Harvin and get that 4th rounder, trade our 3rd rounder for Glennon, sign Torrey Smith, Byron Maxwell, Roy Helu, Bryan Bulaga (possible D'Brick replacement in the future), Brandon Spikes, Rahim Moore, Jermaine Gresham and either Iupati or Orlando Franklin at G.

If that were to happen I'd stay at 6 and draft Vic Beasley.

If TB drafts Winston, like so many believe, maybe they do trade Glennon and sign a veteran QB to compete with Winston.

Funny if Glennon were to beat out Jamius. I'd give the Harvin 4th though... so we'd have a 1st,2nd,3rd a 5th and a 7th.

I would too, but with nothing in free agency and just 2 guys in the draft which Tampa will most likely be taking one of them, I doubt that Tampa will release Glennon for a 4th knowing this...atleast I wouldnt. If I was Tampa I would let him go for nothing less than a 3rd rounder. At worst, I'd keep him as a back up to my new guy but the rest of the NFL looking for a QB will have to find their luck with guys like Ryan Mallet. If Maccagnan can get the trade done for a 4th rounder I'd be surprised.

Micheal Crabtree is a number 2 WR we should be in the market for a number 1 via the draft or FA

Why is Acho not on that list ? or did he sign ?

Would much rather have Matt Moore than Ryan Fitzpatrick

Rather than sign one of those corners I would rather have Revis at least we know what were getting and we can let the young kids grab the other corner spot

Roy Helu would be awesome. That guy would be perfect as a NYJ. Is he a free agent?

Agree about Crabtree. Personally however, Fitz >> Moore.

Fitzpatrick is NOT a FA.  He may get cut, but as of today he is still under contract to Houston.  They will need to sign an ILB, so they'd better target somebody even if it is Josh Mauga. Harris is a FA and likely gone.  Bellore is primarily a special teamer and also a FA.  Idzik's attempt at bringing somebody in for the slot - 5th rounder Jeremiah George - is playing backup for the Jags.  People can hate on Babin, Pace and Coples as an OLB, but they are all at least JAG quality.  We have nothing at ILB after Davis.  Reilly and Enemkpali both slot outside.  They do have Chris Young and Mario Harvey who both probably practice at ILB.  Young was undrafted out of Arizona State who they signed to the PS late in the year.  Harvey was undrafted out of Marshall in 2011 and is 5'11" 264 and ran a sub 4.5. He has lasted in the league as a special teamer, but I wouldn't count on him at ILB since the Colts had actually moved him to FB before he got cut with an injury settlement

Yessir. Unrestricted. There are definitely options in the RB free agent market. I think Roy would be a very solid addition for us. He could run behind the tackle, can catch from the backfield and during his time as a Redskin he had to embrace pass blocking in order to get on the field on 3rd down.

Signing Helu would be very awesome.

I'm sure Chan would rather have Fitzpatrick since he's played in his system and they know each other. I don't think there's any relationship with Moore. The 2 players being fairly equal, that relationship and knowledge swings the arrow Fitz way.

Mangold and him can compare beards in the huddle. And Fitzpatrick's kid can be our Capologist!!

Not me.  Fitzpatrick's good years - the ones that made him his money in Buffalo - were with Gailey.  That's a big deal.
