According to a Rich Cimini tweet, the new cap will be $143m, meaning the Jets have 54.75M cap space even without cuttin Harvin. It's very likely we will have almost $65M soon.

Latest salary cap report from @ESPNStatsInfo: Jets will have $54.75M in cap space, based on a $143m cap. Only JAX with more room. #nyj

That's great news! I wonder if that means we sign him back now? .. and with leancy.

I'd like us to cut Harvin and sign Steve Johnson. We need to keep that fourth, plus paying a slot guy 10 mill with Geno throwing him the ball no for me.

The Key word is right now. by the time Fa starts the Raiders will have the most cap space after they make their cuts.( T Branch, M Schaub, L Woodley, Antonio smith, N Roach, Maurice Jones Drew, and Usama young= 27 million more adding on to their cap space.

The Jets are Lucky that they have some big time players that they can take care of now, and leave their cap in good shape down the road.

You can expect the top three teams with the most money to play in free agency ( Raiders, Jaguars, and Jets) to sometimes overpay the Key free agents they are targeting, that first year of their contract. ( makes it harder for team that don't have that cap space, to compete- On paper it will look like a ridiculous contract)

what's going to be interesting is what happens when those teams that have the most cap space, are competing for the same player in Fa. ( a player agent biggest dream)

Also the worst thing that can happen for teams with most cap space , is for cap to go up more. That gives teams that might have problems signing their own free agents, more cash to keep those players.( take those freeagents off the market). So that report that the cap is going up this year, isn't good news for our teams.

i don't think some of you understand how difficult it will be to spend that much cash. Or that on an open market Harvin probably gets $7 a year this offseason.  Harvin makes plays in space. Gaileys offense needs players who makes plays in space. We can still cut Harvin in 2016 if this season doesn't work out.  Yeah, he's overpaid. No, it doesn't really hurt us in 2015. Whoever our QB is will need players to help them out and make some plays. Might as well keep him unless you're bringing in Cobb or maybe Spiller and Johnson

Harvin is getting cut. It's done.

Maccagnan approached him for a pay cut (presumably in the form of a new deal at millions less per year, but with salary guarantees that he doesn't presently have). Harvin told Maccagnan to stick it in his ear. A first year GM, with no track record for sometimes holding tough and sometimes giving in, can't have this level of giving in (or any level) as his first act. You don't approach a player with no guaranteed money left on his deal, propose he take a multi-million dollar pay cut, and then keep him at the original amount after his agent tells you to piss off. Maccagnan just can't get caught bluffing.

So again, Harvin is getting cut. The only way to avoid that now is if Harvin reconsiders testing the market. That seems like a longshot with so many teams having so much cash to spend, and so few WRs hitting free agency to boot.

It's not that difficult.  It is a "spending" floor, so you can front load contracts to satisfy the rule if need be.

I wonder if Maccagnan tries to get Sheldon's deal done a year early, too. I don't know if he'll want to set a precedent, but locking up his two DEs to front-loaded deals would be pretty slick.

The Draft looks stacked again at Wide Receiver , I'm not keen on keeping a potential cancer player, who's really a Slot guy, and has a history of missing a ton of playing time for 10.5m and losing a 4th to boot. Their are at least 4-5 receivers In he draft which are potential Number ones. You keep ten mill saving from Harvin, sign Mo, give him 25mill guaranteed year one, and with the net -10.5mill Harvin  & -6.9 Mill from Mo's 5th year, its only costing you 7.6M from your cap to do that.

There are 7 teams with 40mill plus in cap space, with the colts being the only playoff team.

While I agree with you that the team benefits from an inflated 1st year salary, a player much rather have a 4 year 36 mill contract with a 15 mill SB and a 1st year salary of 1 mill rather than a 1st year salary of 16 mill.  The SB gives the player a little job security as it costs the team more to cut him down the road.

And teams have to be cognizant that they always won't have this much money, you pay a premium this year in subsequent years, players on the team are going to want the same deal if they are at the same talent level, and in those years the jets/other teams won't have that kind of money causing resentment and players to leave.

Or we can just thank Idzik for being super frugal. Cutting everyone. Gaining tons of cap space. And than McCags comes in ,a real football guy" and spends the right money on the right players. Joint effort.

So when we win it all. All the credit goes to the

Idzik - McCags tandem.

Idzik cleaned house. McCags built it back up.

the CBA states that deals can only be reworked after three full years for 1st rd picks.

Idsik did sh*t with the cap, he didn't make one hard choice regarding the cap. I don't even consider trading revis coming off a ACL for a 1st and a 3rd a hard choice.

No one let Idzik finish his plan he started. Now McCags reaps the rewards of all the cap space john "the genius" Idzik created

Just wanted to wish you all the best in Jacksonville Mr. Idzik.

It's in poor taste that you came back trolling Jets boards.

Time to move on.... I know we have

So all I'm really hearing is that Idzik left us in a great spot...

Geez.  Any moron could have made those cap cuts.  You think all that was the result of hard work and uncanny GM smarts?  Ahahahahaha!  Idzik was an imbecile who never had any sort of coherent plan.

I don't think they've made their decision on Harvin yet. Plenty of teams are cutting players, but Harvin remains on the roster here. They have a week or ten days of the new football year to find replacement playmakers in free agency, and if they do, I think then you'll see Harvin cut. That could be a different, more "natural" WR, or it could be a guy like C.J. Spiller, but it looks to me like they're going to put that time to use.

People have some black & white opinions on this, but I just don't see it as black & white at all. I'd like to see them move on from Harvin, he's not worth a 4th rounder and $10.5M IMHO, but I also think it wouldn't be prudent to dump him without knowing they have some new talent in place. A team as devoid of playmakers as the Jets just can't afford to do that. They can afford the $10.5M, though.

Talent like Percy Harvin isn't something to make the wrong decision on the Jets are doing their due diligence I think Harvin remains a Jets and other glaring needs are addressed

WR talent like he possesses isn't replaced with a Clyde Gates,David Nelson or Jalen Sanders COME ON GUYS we haven't had a playmaker WR since Keyshawn Johnson

Agree completely.

Holding on to Harvin until we are sure that we can sign a quality FA wide receiver is good business.

I personally hope it's Stevie J. and Spiller for what Harvin was looking to earn this year.

Then we go get ourselves a quality #1 in the draft. DGB in the second perhaps if we go QB or OLB at 6?
