Mock Draft Round-up
March 1st, 2015 12:54 pm
Here’s a rundown of a number of mock drafts from around the web and who the different analysts have the Jets taking. Marcus Mariota seems to be the most popular player for the Jets to pick, but Amari Cooper and Dante Fowler also make some appearances … see the picks and the reasoning from each mock drafter below:

Mel Kiper, ESPN
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Kiper’s comments: It’s not a given that Mariota couldn’t fall further than this. But in his second season in New York, Geno Smith put up a QBR of 35.4, meaning the only regular starting QB from 2014 who performed worse was Blake Bortles. The reality is New York is no closer to knowing who their potential long-term solution at QB is than they were after the second day of the 2013 NFL draft. I’m certainly not alone in wondering whether Mariota’s brilliance in the Oregon offense makes him a likely star at the NFL level, but when you combine his skill set and his tremendous athletic ability combined with a great temperament and work ethic, he’s a player worthy of placing a bet on at this stage. It’s not so much a question of whether the Jets are convinced he’s the answer, as it is whether it would be smart to pass on him and assume they can find a solution anywhere else.

Todd McShay, ESPN
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
McShay’s comments: I see Mariota as being a notch below [Florida State quarterback Jameis] Winston, but I do believe he has the potential to become a good starter in this league, so long as the team that takes him has a plan to develop him. Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is a good fit for Mariota in that regard, given his history with spread-formation offenses. He can incorporate some up-tempo and zone-read elements for Mariota early while also developing his ability to win from the pocket, which is what Mariota will need to succeed long term.

Josh Norris, NBC/Rotoworld
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Norris’s comments: There is no reason to be down on Amari after the Combine. In fact, he solidified his evaluation. Amari wins with little wasted movement, burst and quickness when running routes to separate. That showed in his 3-cone and 20 yard short shuttle. The vertical was well below average, which matches his lack of proficiency in contested catches (albeit improving). His traits translate very well.

Peter King, MMQB
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
King’s comments: Dunno. You pick it: best receiver available or best corner available, now that Chip Kelly has killed the Jets’ Mariota dream. I can’t fathom Mariota getting past the sixth pick.”

Don Banks, SI.com
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Banks’s comments: As desperate for an answer at quarterback as the Jets have been since 2011 or so, they somehow find waiting for them the reigning Heisman winner with the gaudy collegiate statistics and squeaky clean image. The Geno Smith era is officially in countdown mode if this scenario unfolds in New York.

Bucky Brooks, NFL Media
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Brooks’s comments: New OC Chan Gailey’s arrival paves the way for the team to develop Mariota as the franchise QB of the future. Gailey has experimented with the spread offense and zone-read concepts in the NFL, leading to an easier transition for Mariota.

Charles Davis, NFL Media
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Davis’s comments: If new head coach Todd Bowles is not satisfied that Geno Smith is the answer at quarterback, then Mariota is the choice. If not, look for a cornerback such as Trae Waynes here.

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Media
Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State
Jeremiah’s comments: The Jets could easily go quarterback here, but in this scenario I have them upgrading the cornerback position. New head coach Todd Bowles loves to blitz and he can’t with the current lack of talent at the corner spot.

Lance Zierlien, NFL Media
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Zierlien’s comments: There is a brand new regime in place for the Jets and finding a new face of the franchise should be high on the priority list.

Dane Brugler, CBS Sports
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Brugler’s comments: The Jets will have a fresh look in 2015 with a new general manager (Mike Maccagnan) and head coach (Todd Bowles). And if Mariota is still on the board at No. 6, the Jets will have a chance to add a promising young passer as well.

Pat Kirwin, CBS Sports
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Kirwin’s comments: Kevin White stole the show at the combine with his size and speed but Cooper has been productive for four years. He reminds me of Reggie Wayne with his smooth route-running skills and hands. His career production is second to none in this draft.

Rob Rang, CBS Sports
Dante Fowler Jr., DE/OLB, Florida
Rang’s comments: The decision new GM Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles make regarding Percy Harvin could determine which strategy the Jets take with this pick. Should the Jets elect not to keep Harvin and his $10.5 million cap hit, adding a potential No. 1 target could give Geno Smith his best chance of success. Building up the pass rush, however, is also key. Fowler’s versatility is his calling card. His unique combination of power, agility and tenacity earns him time at defensive end, linebacker and defensive tackle for the Gators and that Swiss Army knife-like multiplicity could be very appealing to Bowles.

Peter Schrager, Fox Sports
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Schrager’s comments: For as much positive talk there is swirling around Winston, I don’t see Mariota slipping past the Jets at 6. Mariota performed well on Saturday, owning all the athletic tests and whipping the ball around with velocity. He didn’t run a 4.4 40-yard dash as some expected he would, but a 4.52 isn’t exactly something to sneeze at, either. He didn’t look overly comfortable taking simulated snaps under center, but that, I’m told, is something that can be worked on, and he actually looked better than some expected he would considering the shotgun offense he ran at Oregon. No doubt about it, he’s a quiet kid. Plain and simple. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a leader. Some guys lead by example, and not their words. Winston owns every room he’s in; Mariota simply doesn’t. That may turn a lot of people off. It shouldn’t. He’s got all the physical tools, wants to be great and has unlimited potential. New York, though a media pressure cooker, could be the right fit.”

Matt Miller, Bleacher Report
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Miller’s comments: Too many fans have begun to think of Marcus Mariota as a consolation prize, or a quarterback not worthy of the No. 2 pick in this draft. He’s definitely worth it, and he may even be the second player taken when the 2015 draft kicks off. Mariota isn’t Jameis Winston as a passer, but he can do amazing things with his mind, his arm and his legs. He’s a top-notch athlete with a high football IQ, and that’s a deadly combination given his upside, character and youth. Mariota is a bit of a project because of the Oregon offense, but nothing about his actual traits and tools is a project. He’s capable of being a franchise quarterback. The Jets need that–unless you believe Geno Smith is going to turn his career around. And unless the Jets sign a veteran quarterback in free agency, I’ll continue to think the pick here is a quarterback.

Eric Galko, Optimum Scouting
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Galko’s comments: If Mariota doesn’t go first-overall, the Jets are the most likely landing spot. A new coach and new GM means that everything could be overhauled. Geno Smith can get his chance as a legit NFL starter while Mariota develops, giving him the chance to make the most of his life after New York.

Steve Serby, New York Post
Dante Fowler, OLB Florida
Serby’s comments: NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock compares this 6-foot-3, 261-pounder to three-time Chiefs Pro Bowler Justin Houston, and last time I checked, Todd Bowles didn’t inherit anyone like that on the roster Rex Ryan and John Idzik left him. A pass rush is the best deodorant when your cornerback situation is a cesspool.

Eric Edholm, Yahoo Sports
Randy Gregory, DE/OLB, Nebraska
Edholm’s comments: With Calvin Pace near the end and the jury out on Quentin Coples, the Jets could use someone to heat up the edges. Gregory’s combine weight of 235 pounds might be a concern, but with the Jets featuring such strength up front with Sheldon Richardson, Mo Wilkerson and Damon Harrison. They would allow Gregory to pin his ears back in passing situations.

Walter Football
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Comments: The poor Jets missed out on Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, though in the scenario in which I have Tennessee passing on Mariota, I have New York taking him. If the Jets don’t trade up for either, perhaps they’ll target Brett Hundley in the second round. In the meantime, they can take one of the top prospects on the board, and that would be Amari Cooper. Cooper is now the No. 2 receiver in this class, but he still had a strong showing at the NFL Combine. He’ll provide a big upgrade in the receiving corps; the unreliable Percy Harvin may not be on the team next year with John Idzik gone. Speaking of Idzik, I have all the coach and GM firing grades here.

Mariota going 2#, I don't buy the Mettenberg thing either. We take the best receiver @ 6. If Mariota is at 6 he's a Jet 100%.

Titans don't want an Eli Manning scenario.

Would you want to be picked by the Titans of Tennessee? Worst case scenario for Mariota!

I too think that the Titans take him....Mettenberg? Yea OK!

If the Jets takes a CB at #6.... I just can't even.

Exactly. It's Shane Ray or Kevin White, depending on what we do in free agency. If both are gone a draft & trade with Philly would be nice ... Mariota for Foles, ..... or this years and next years 1st round picks.

If Philly doesn't bite, then it's Geno in 2015 and Mariota in 2016.

KC got a steal in 2011 taking Justin Houston in the 3rd rd..

I rather trade down, pick up an extra 2nd rounder, draft the pass rusher / WR in the middle of the 1st round and then fill another hole (ILB) in the 2nd round with the extra pick. Or a WR. Unless Bowles sees a wideout or pass rusher at 6 that he clearly feels like is by far better than the rest of the guys that could be available in the middle of the 1st round.

Is it really worth drafting a receiver or pass rusher at that spot when you can get a better or similar guy 10-15 picks later?

DGB is the only WR that might be better than Coops. I doubt he makes it to us at 37 he will probably be gone by 30.

I don't know. Kevin White has more upside, but also higher bust potential. Mayock even has him as his #1 wideout ahead of Cooper (I'd disagree btw). You still have Parker. That's 4 legit 1st round receivers, they're all sort of similar just based on the fact that all 4 of them could turn out to be studs. Some have more upside/bust potential, some are safer bets with less upside maybe. But I think they all have a chance to be Pro Bowl type players if all goes well. And then of course you still have the pass rushers. There's another like 4 legit 1st round edge rushers available worthy of being picked in the top 20. So if we trade back, that's about 8 players we could target there and odds are a couple of them will be available there no matter what. And they're all sort of similar. Nobody knows which one of the pass rushers or receivers will turn out to be the best, it doesn't have to be the guy that goes the earliest. I mean just look at last year with Sammy Watkins and Beckham. If somebody wants to trade up I say go for it and grab that extra pick.

News Flash  Cooper is better than Sammie

With all the NFL drug policies etc in place I can't imagine any team taking the risk of DGB in the first round. And even top of the second for that matter.

I just don't think Mariota's gonna be there. Someone who wants him is going to make it their business to trade ahead of the Jets.

At least that means we'll get one of the quality WR's or OLB if the 2 QB's are taken in the top 5. I was worried that only 1 QB taken then Cooper, White, Fowler and Ray get taken.

There's been some whining here about the Jets meaningless wins last year, but I think they're in very good position in this draft. Leonard Williams is a virtual lock to go top 5, too.

1 more than half = almost everyone?

Sports journalists are lazy. They all repeat after each other. Their mock drafts are doodie.

LOL! Yeah.... after I posted I went back and ACTUALLY counted!! I guess I'm lazy like the sports journalists. I can't count above 10 so when I hit 10 and there were 7 Marriota picks I went and posted. I figured most of the clowns on this board are too A.D.D. to actually read more than a couple of hundred words.

Looks like you actually took your Ritalin today and read the whole thing. :winking0001: I was expecting a ton of TL;DR

I didn't read any of it.

The first sentence you wrote was "10 out of 18". That's 1 more than half.

The Marshall signing by Mac signifies a win now mentality. Lots of quality wr's in this draft but Mac opts to get a polished star in Marshall. Grabbing Mariota at 6 is not a win now approach. He needs to sit a year or two. Marshall signing just wreaks of adding a vet qb and filling another need like OL or LB. I don't see Mac staying put with Smith as QB. Not now with Marshall who is tempermental when his QB sucks. Look how he blasted Cutler last year, deservedly so. Can u imagine the wrath Marshall unleashes on Smith when he plays poorly. It would be classic not to be missed tv. I think Mac's got something up his sleeve and is gonna find a quality vet to replace Smith.

Considering that Geno Smith is the QB, it's the most obvious pick.... BUT I think that Maccagnan is not going to take the chance on him and go either OL or OLB.

That's what he'll do if he's smart. There is way too much talent there to pass on it all for a qb who didn't play in a pro style offense and struggled in the playoffs anytime he had to make more than one read.
