Tedy Bruschi : Patriots might need to change defensive concepts

ESPN NFL analyst and former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi thinks the Patriots might have to abandon their man-coverage scheme in the wake of losing cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner.“If they don’t get corners in there that can play the type of quality man-to-man that those two players could do, you’re talking concept change now,” Bruschi said Wednesday on "SportsCenter." “This was a predominantly man-coverage scheme in the secondary because they trusted those players so much, with [Devin] McCourty over the top.

“You still have McCourty over the top, but if you don’t have those [cornerbacks], coach Belichick and this defensive staff, they realize that if you can’t do something, you just don’t do it anymore. So your concept changes, you start coaching differently. You become more of a zone scheme, which they were a few years ago.

“You have to change the way you call defenses. That’s how big of a signing this was[for the Jets].”Bruschi also weighed in on the loss of versatile running back Shane Vereen, the now-former Patriot who signed with the Giants on Tuesday.

“That type of player doesn’t grow on trees,” Bruschi said. “Do you go to the draft for that type of player and develop him? And as you develop him, there’s going to be that one or two years of growth that even Vereen had early on. Now you’ve developed him and had him where you wanted, and now he’s gone.”

No big deal they have had years in which they have had nothing at Cb before.  They generate turnovers, that is the best thing the pats have done for years.

This.

Basically any gameplan from about week 6 in 2004 when Law went down through the 2013 season.

One of the things you have to love about the New York Jets-New England Patriots rivalry is that it's not limited to Sundays (or Mondays or Thursdays) in the fall. It's a 365-day thing, part of the everyday lives for the devoted fans in both regions. A Jets-Patriots reference can pop up almost anywhere at any time.

Such was the case Sunday morning in Boston, where Patriots owner Robert Kraft took a playful jab at the enemy to the south. Speaking at a packed St. Patrick's Day breakfast, Kraft cracked, "I must tell you, I'm not comfortable wearing green and white because it reminds me of a certain New York football team."A couple minutes later, Kraft brought up Darrelle Revis and how "we've been taking a lot of flak about losing one of our best players." Revis, of course, left the Super Bowl champions to sign with the Jets -- a five-year, $70 million contract (talk about green).

It was hard to tell if Kraft was serious, as much of his speech was lighthearted, but he said, "The money was about the same. (Revis) was actually favoring us, coming to us a little cheaper." With tongue in cheek, he said the deal-breaker was Revis' demand that Castle Island -- located in Boston Harbor -- be re-named Revis Island. That got a lot of laughs from the crowd.(Funny how the owners of the two teams like discussing Revis in public. When Woody Johnson did it in December, he got slapped with a tampering charge by the Patriots.)

Yep, the Patriots lost one of their best players, but they still have bragging rights. Kraft ended his speech with the ultimate exclamation point, pulling out the Lombardi Trophy, which was adorned with an Irish green knit cap.

Pats fans should be happy, they squeaked out another Superbowl after Carroll had a freaking brain fart.

Safe to say, that without Revis, Browner, Vareen, Wilfork & likely even they they do again come out of the AFC would no way in hell have the ammunition to beat a team like Seahawks with Graham, or Aaron Rogers without Revis.

The run is truly over, Brady won't get BETTER from here on out.
