For every Terry Bradshaw there are a thousand guys that were horrible in their first two years and stayed horrible. Not sure what you don't understand about that.

Not sure what you don't understand about the fact that not giving Geno another season to turn it around could wind up costing the Jets a Bradshaw-quality QB. A very large percentage of draft picks don't work out well in the NFL. Do you think the Jets should stop making draft selections because for every successful pick there are "thousands" who don't pan out?

Are you saying these are good odds?

What exactly do you see in Geno that makes you think he has a chance to be that good? What is it that he does well that makes you want to risk another season on him?

Disclaimer: No I am NOT comparing any of our QBs to Montana, just making a point

This game is on NFL Network right now, and here we have maybe the greatest QB in one of the best and most famous games ever played, especially "the catch"

and yet, Montana is doing a bunch of the things we have  absolutely no tolerance for in our own QBs. He is consistently:

Going backwards from pressure

Locking completely on to his primary receiver (caused 1 int)

Making poor decisions on throws (3 ints)  that are very Sanchez/Geno like

Obviously, yes he also makes a lot of plays. He's Joe F'in Montana, legend.

Point is that sometimes I think that both fans and modern coaches (especially defensive ones) are so locked into this mentality that the QB has to "protect the football" that they also stifle the ability of the QB to make plays, to WIN games.

It is why I think it is way too premature to think Geno cannot develop with the right system and coaching into a good even top tier QB. He certainly has the tools.

If Montana, even at the peak of his ability was still making some of the mistakes that people completely bash Geno for in his first and second years. Geno MAY VERY WELL SUCK, but when you consider the coaching he has had, and how difficult the QB position is, I do not think it is unreasonable to at least see if he can develop. We should also continue looking for the next guy in the draft.

Just a thought. Bash away.

Montana was not at the peak of his ability in 1981. He was a third year QB who had yet to win anything. That game you are referring to made him.

If you want to see Montana at his peak ability watch Super Bowl XXIV where he played the position at about as high a level as it has ever been played, leading the Niners to what is still the most lopsided Super Bowl victory, 55-10 over the Hall of Famer John Elway-led Broncos.

It's a risk-reward thing. High risk, potentially high reward. And the risk isn't really all that high. So the guy is taking up one roster position on the team, and costing some cap space. Well worth that small amount of risk for the potential of having a very good QB.

I have seen flashes of brilliance in Geno, such as his perfect QB rating in the last game last season. I think it's worth giving him more time to fix the holes in his game.

And finally, the "thousands" of failures you pointed out could just as much be a consequence of modern teams' proclivities to cut a guy too quick, as it is indicative that guys really can't improve after 2 years.
