After Much Consideration, Now Leaning toward Schreff at 6 or Trade down

I don't think Beasley will make it to 6, Ray is too limited Gregory can't stay away from the wacky weed and the more I read about Fowler, I don't see him as the "pass rushing" threat is has been made out to be.  Cooper or White may still be there at 6 so of course they would merit serious consideration.  However if we want to give whomever is starting for us at QB as much protection as possible as well as open holes for our running game Scherff should be the pick as unglamorous as that may be.

Now I am stating this with the assumption that Mariota either is off the board, or didn't impress the FO enough during private work outs and if that scenario I expect us to trade down.

If no trade down, 4 round mock:

Brandon Schreff OT/OG - Solidifies our offensive line as he can probably start at RT over Breno or at the very least upgrade the guard position along with Carpenter.

Phillip Dorsett WR - Can make our pass offense truly elite.  Gailey will love him.

Nate Orchard OLB - Under the radar pass rush specialist who also played well against the run.

Ty Montgomery WR/RB - I can't take credit for this; some one posted about converting Montgomery to a running back hybrid at the next level and it makes a lot of sense.  He is also an excellent returner.  Just hope he lasts to the 4th round.

BPA in 7th round.

We really have so many different directions we can go in to improve the team.

I'd be happy with Cooper, White, Schreff, Mariota (if Mac, Bowles and Gailey are sold on him).....all would be fine choices.

I really am starting to like the thought of adding a pass rusher though. When we had a dominant secondary we never had the line to compliment them. Then we developed and drafted the line, but we lost the secondary. Now we have the line and the secondary......if we can add a pass rusher......watch out!!!

I don't know a lot about the prospects, but if there is an Aldon Smith type talent, he would boost this D to the next level, easily top 5 IMO.

I'd sooner have a play maker, OBJ type reciever or Pass rushing OLB, game changers. A Right Tackle or Guard, isn't a game changer, no matter how solid for a decade he is.

I'd only be comfortable with Schreff if he would be able to step in for Brick once he retired.....and in the mean time could play RT.

I can justify taking a LT that high. Any other spot on the line and I'd rather take the play maker at WR or OLB. I don't know enough about Schreff to know his limitations though, so I can't comment personally on where he'd fit in the NFL.

hmmm. I see what you are saying did you see the rest of the mock draft?  It didn't stop at the 6th pick.  Dorsett IS a play making receiver.  Orchard IS a pass rushing line backer and I believe he recorded double digit sacks last year.  The top teams in the league are top teams because they add top talent beyond round 1.  Also an  elite RT or G can help dominate an opposing defensive line.  That ranks with changing a game in my opinion

I do understand the apprehension of taking a guard that high.  If we trade down a bit, if Scherff is off the board we would probably have our choice of OTs Lael Collins, Ereck Flowers and Andrus Peat among others.

Any way here is what Mayock has to say about him:

Please STOP can all these "pick em" threads be merged into one every time somebody has a feeling or an idea of the draft we get a new thread here. Thanks

I actually meant to post this in the Draft Forum but if a thread doesn't interest you, why bother responding?

I love Beasley, however whats the point of drafting a premium pass rushing prospect if your blitzing a ton anyways? I like the idea of getting a T, however I feel Peat is better than Scherff long term. I would also hate drafting a G in the 1st round. If he can kick out later on then cool, but if not then that's bad value. Dorsett would be a good pickup if Eli Harold isn't there.

Picking a guard at 6 should get GM fired

Jon Cooper picked in top 6 has been a major bust, Warmack had a rough rookie yr, turned it around 2nd half of yr2. But to take a guard this high is assinine

He can play right tackle. He has been projected to play guard but appreciate your opinion.   But just because two players busted are you saying you never take that position in the 10 ten?  That is actually more assinine (spelling?).

Yeah, Iike Beasley too and if he is there that is who I go with. The blitz will be that much more dangerous with someone with his speed and first step coming around the edge. The assumption is that he not available.

maybe the thing is to focus on the trade down and take a tackle prospect.  I think Scherff will be a very good player tho.  He has been favorably compared to Zack Martin of the Cowboys.  I guess 6 might be a bit early for him....

Then the Lions picked up Wilford in the 3rd who was just as good but wasn't as fluid through drills and it turns out that he's the best G of the class. As for Cooper he's not a bust as he was just out for his rookie year with a broken leg, however that was still bad value.

He still played guard in college, and plenty of guards can be had in rds 3-6

Cooper is a major bust, in his 2nd year he was beaten out by Journeymen, he busted so bad they signed Iupati.

I would personally prefer to trade down and pick up Andrus Peat if Beasley isn't available.

I love this player (Brandon Scherff) and would welcome him as a member of the Jets. If I am to take our New GM and HC at their word, it will never happen. I don't see this kid as being the best player on anyone's big board as the 6th best player. He should be, because IMO, he's the top LT candidate in this draft. Many have labeled him an OG, and because of this he'll fall in the draft .

At 6 I would take Cooper if he's on the board.

If we trade down with the Browns, I would take  Gurley at 12 and Scherff at 19 . It's either this or the Browns give us their 2016 1st unprotected along with their 12 overall pick in 2015 and a 3rd.

Not a bad idea; I am really feeling the trade down too.  Btw is that really Glennon in your profile pic?  Kid looks like he gets sand kicked in his face at the beach lol.
