Hess Rules Standard rules, AND - NO CHARACTER CLAIMING!!! Winter was quickly approaching and the Overlook Hotel was in need of a new caretaker. Jack Torrance, a writer, applied and interviewed for the position. He interviewed with the hotel manager, Stuart Ullman, who warns Jack that a previous caretaker developed cabin fever and brutally murdered his family and later killed himself. Jack was a little shaken by this discovery, but took it in stride. He needed the solitude to focus on his writing. Jack, with his family, Wendy and Danny, arrive to the Overlook Hotel on closing day. They receive a tour from the chef, Dick Hallorann, who is a telepath like Danny. Dick calls this ability “shining” and he warned Danny that the hotel “shines” with memories. Soon after the tour, all of the hotel staff leaves and the Torrances are left alone. It was an exceptionally harsh winter, and with every passing day, Jack descends into madness and the hotel starts to “shine”.
