New York Jets Rumors: Mike Glennon Trade Option, Marcus Mariota Draft Target If Philip Rivers Not Traded?

Apr 07, 2015 09:55 AM EDT

The NY Jets are still searching for another quarterback and head coach Todd Bowles did not rule out adding one in the draft and that sparked rumors about moving up to take Marcus Mariota and this comes as New York may also target other deals, including Mike Glennon or Philip Rivers if those players are traded by the Buccaneers and Chargers.

The Jets have Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick on the roster, but according to the NY Daily News, head coach Todd Bowles said the team wants to add another quarterback. Bowles said that competition is good and that with Fitzpatrick injured, the team needs more depth alongside Chris Simms. Smith is expected to be the number one once workouts start, but things could change as the draft gets closer.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Jets sent six scouts, coaches and execs to workout Marcus Mariota ahead of the draft and the team could consider trading up for the number two pick. Mariota is getting interest from the Browns, Chargers and Eagles and the Jets come in with the number six pick in the first round. The team also may consider a trade for Mike Glennon, as Pro Football Talk reports that the Buccaneers are likely to move Glennon once they draft Jameis Winston.

The move for Glennon could come after the draft, as the Jets would know if they missed out on Marcus Mariota or not. The trade could be an option for the team, as Winston is the presumptive number one pick. The Chargers are also reportedly willing to trade Philip Rivers to try and get Marcus Mariota and that could make him a target as well. Pro Football Talk reports that the Titans could be a potential option for the Chargers if they trade Rivers for the chance to get Mariota.

The Jets are also looking for depth at running back and after meeting with free agent Stevan Ridley, the team could turn to the draft, trades or other backs on the free agent market. Ridley is coming off of an injury and some other free agent names include Steven Jackson, Knowshon Moreno and Pierre Thomas. Rich Cimini at ESPN New York suggests Doug Martin could be a potential target, as the Buccaneers could be willing to trade him this offseason.

Cimini writes that Martin has potential as a former first round pick and the Jets could buy low after he has had a couple of disappointing seasons. If the Jets are planning to spend a pick on an RB in the draft this year, they could get value but using a mid-round pick in a trade for Martin over taking an unproven back in the draft. While Martin has been banged up, he had a strong rookie season and could be poised to bounce back after a good finish to 2014 with 108 yards against the Saints.

James Walker at ESPN.com writes that Ridley has also met with the Miami Dolphins and it's likely he picks one of the AFC East teams to sign with. Pro Football Talk reported that Ridley has another meeting lined up with an unnamed team and if he doesn't sign there, he likely will pick the Dolphins or the Jets. Both teams are lacking depth at the running back position and could use some help behind their starters.

I really hope we do not mortgage our draft picks and make the mistake of moving up for Mariota. That would put the organization back by atleast 3 to 4 years at a minimum.

Seriously doubt we move up. In fact.. Nothing our GM or Coach has said indicates a trade up. That's all outside noise.

Right now no GM or HC is going to show their cards.

But yes i am responding to the rumors stated in this article. I hope those rumors never come true.

IDK, a mid round pick and Smith for Glennon wouldn't hurt the Jets all that much

I was talking about the rumors of JETS trading up to get Mariota.

I would not give up a mid round pick for Glennon though. We do not have the 5th or 6th round picks. So best we can do is 7th round pick. There is no way Glennon is worth a 3rd or 4th rounder.

Really don't think we should trade anymore picks. All we have is our 1-4, 6th and a 7th. And 6th and 7ty rounds usually hold nothing.

I'm inclined to agree with you normally, but if Gailey is sold on any QB, ya got to take the shot.  QB is just such an important position in today's NFL, if one that you think has great upside is available  , you have to roll the dice

If we land Rivers I will be beyond thrilled. Right now I haven't been happy with Macc so far. If we land that Rivers we are a playoff team... before we take anyone in the draft.

From the draft all we would need is a solid starter on the O-line and an outside pass rusher and we are set..... if we have a vet like that at QB.

True. I agree if you think you found your QB then you absolutely roll the dice but I don't think Mariota or Glennon is the guy so that's why I feel that way. Now if we are talking Rivers? I might be intrigued.

Glennon gets no love around here, but he's been better than Geno Smith over the last two years.  I know as Jets fans we've set the bar so low for our QB's over the last 6 years that a player who is marginally better than our current QB excites some of us.  Oh, to be a Jets fan...

Villian gives him enough love for the whole board. Glennon is ass. Thanks but no thanks.

Villian needs to have a chat with you.  he's almost got me convinced.  If these rumors are true, I'm going to assume he has been e-mailing Macc film

With Mariota starting to move up draft boards after glowing reviews from Gruden and Mayock, I highly doubt he falls to 6.

I'd take a flyer on Glennon for a 4th.  His skill set seems to be similar to Vinny Testaverde.  Strong arm, stands tall in the pocket, no mobility.  There's a chance he pans out.

Fans pay close attention to Gruden, and Mayock, not  NFL GM's.   It really doesn't matter where we have a player rated.  I don't know where he currently stands on any teams board

yes but guys like Gruden and Mayock have actually been in the NFL.  If they are thinking this stuff, others in league circles likely are too.

Gruden, Mayock, and Kiper, make their livings being TV talking heads now.  They just don't have the 1,000's of hours of research, or the resources available that an NFL GM does.

Do they have more available then we as fans have watching highlight films on you tube?  Sure.   But no NFL GM is revealing to them what their current big board looks like at this point.  None that will have a job next year at least

Then you do not have the ability to be happy. WTF is your problem with Big Mac? I think he has done a tremendous job so far and judging by the threads and posts on this site, MOST Jets fans agree.

you're entitled to your opinion and I am mine.  I don't think there's any way Mariota makes it to 6.

With Mike Glennon we're a Superbowl contender, and his salary is less than 1 million and he's 25 years old.

I should do this lol.

Look at Glennon's TD to INT ratio it's practically 2:1. He's certainly worth a 4th.

And thats with arguably the worst Oline in the league (also the most penalized Oline) and a group of wideouts that ranked 12th in the league for the most drops.

As I said earlier in the thread, you almost have me convinced.   I would go for both of out 7's this year, and next year's 5th, or next year's 5th and Smith
