I was talking about Jaelen Strong you asswipe.

My contempt for the Devin Smith pick is for totally different reasons. Also listed above. Look for the name "Devin Smith" or the context/quotes indicating I am talking about him.

You clearly missed the quote says Jaelen Strong.

Was calling me an asswipe a conscious choice on an honest mistake, or was it do to a hidden set of inner rage!! :sign0013:

All of the above. I did not want to look really foolish by being misquoted. I did it anyway with my own quote. :)

I don't mind the smith pick but really? His most positive reviews are that he plays like the guy we passed on DGB?

dawg, we NEED this man and his crazy speed game.  he's going to be huge for us.  very instrumental in the Jets superbowl run.

DGB doesn't fit our team. We have two big Wrs on the outside already. We needed a flat out speed guy.

Right, DGB didn't fit our team because we have 2 big WRs on the outside. Leonard Williams was a great fit though, we didn't have anyone like him at all.

But we didn't have a speedy receiver that could stretch the field. Smith gives that to us , DGB not so much.

New York Jets Second-Round Pick WR Devin Smith, 5.1

On his initial reaction to being drafted by the Jets…

I was very excited. A team that I’ve watched over the years and loved is the word really, my family was right here with me. For them to experience this with me, it was unbelievable.

On how his speed can help the Jets passing offense…

I think it can help a lot, especially stretching the field deep and going vertical. I think I can really help this team in that area.

On the prospects on playing alongside Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker…

I’m ready to learn, playing with Brandon Marshall, he’s someone that I’ve watched for a while and excited to be his teammate, along with Eric Decker as well.

On his best 40-yard-dash time…

Somewhere in the 4.3 range. I ran that back in the spring when I was in school.

On what he brings to the table besides his speed…

I’m versatile. You can move me inside, you can move me outside. And I’m really good at special teams. I was gunner on punt coverage teams at Ohio State and I’m very effective on special teams.

On whether he talked to the Jets much leading up to the draft…

A little bit. I talked to him at the Senior Bowl a little bit and that was kind of it.

On whether there were any visits to the Jets prior to the draft…

No, I did not take a visit there. I talked to them a little bit at the Combine as well, but besides that, just the Senior Bowl and the Combine was the only time I really had contact with them.

On whether he had a sense that the Jets were interested in him…

I really didn’t know. I didn’t know who was interested in me so I really had to keep an open mind on who was going to draft me and just be ready.

On being a deep-ball specialist…

Really just making sure you track the ball down. I think it’s not as hard as a lot of people think. Make sure you concentrate on the ball, the simple fundamentals that come with catching the ball, make sure you let the ball land. If you have to jump, make sure you time your jump right. I think for the most part with all this, it’s good concentration and just knowing how to adjust to find that ball and things like that.

Devin Smith had 33 catches for ohio state last year.

Kinda seems like a guy with upside and potential but the production really doesnt warrant his draft selection.

It's actually a product of their system, they are based more on running than passing, and spreading the ball around.  For example, they threw about 120 passes less than say West Virginia threw last year.   Similar reason why Beckham only had 59 catches with LSU, because the system was predicated more on running.

Great point plus the Buckeyes went through 3 QB's last year, who knows what he would have done with Cardale all year, hopefully we find out next year :)

I would like to see Devin catch more with his hands (less body) but think it's a great pick, he will add some explosion to this offense, somehow finding himself wide open down the field just when we need a score

Welcome fellow Buckeye WR's Devin Smith and DeVier Posey (via trade in the 3rd)

Honestly after the big 3...and if DGB was damaged goods, I think Smith is the best WR prospect in this class, especially for what the Jets need.

a funny way of saying you had @ 5th best

The one thing I don't get that's being bandied about is the lack of hands for Devin Smith.  The tapes I've seen of him, seem to show he has very good hands (a bit of a body catcher at time), but when he's forced to go up for contested passes, he's been extremely good at catching those passes.  It was similar to what people were saying about Beckham last year, about how he needs to improve his hands, when there was no evidence whatsoever that his hands were bad, infact now it looks like his hands are exceptional.

To me, his biggest downside is the lack of running the full route tree.  Other than that, I love this pick, and I think in a year or so, people will be wondering how he didn't go in the first round.   I posted this in another thread, but probably more relevant here, it's a good read.
