Recommended Posts

Height: 6-4.5

Weight: 321

40: 5.09

Year: 4Sr

Deon Simon

School: Northwestern State

Position: DT

Bio: Two-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior after totaling 26 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack in seven games. Missed time during the season with an MCL sprain.

Positive: Massive and explosive interior lineman who takes up a lot of space. Plays with leverage and fires off the snap. Keeps his feet moving, holds his ground and is impossible to move off the point. Displays a good change of direction with the ability to slide down the line laterally. Uses his hands well and can dominate opponents.

Negative: Not a natural pass rusher or playmaker. Possesses just a short burst of speed and lumbers around the field. Should be more productive than he is.

Analysis: Simon is an imposing figure who can dominate the line of scrimmage when focused on his game. He offers possibilities at nose tackle but must polish his game and consistently play at a high level.

Seen him play?

As much NCAA football as I watch I can't recall having seen Northwestern State play.

Big lazy guy who has under-achieved according to several draft profiles.  He'll be behind 2 pretty good NT's  Snacks, and Barnes.  he's maybe a developmental player, who at best will be on PS.

That sounds like the 5th Round G. Haven't seen that about Simon. What I've seen sounds a lot like Snacks.

“History: Baton Rouge native who also competed in track and field. Missed time in 2007 because of an ankle sprain. Committed to Central Florida (also had an offer from Kentucky), but suffered a severe right leg injury (torn right ACL and MCL, hamstring avulsion) in ‘08. Graduated in ‘09, but failed to qualify academically, spent time at prep school and wasn’t eligible to join the Demons until 2011. That season (wore jersey No. 76), saw limited action in six games and was credited with six tackles, zero for loss and zero sacks. Appeared in eight games in ‘12, managing 14-1-1 with a batted pass. Started all 12 games in ‘13 and recorded 38-6-4 ½ with three batted passes. In ‘14, managed 24-5 ½-1 with two forced fumbles in seven starts before a grade two MCL sprain ended his season. Team captain. Became the first in his family to graduate college when he earned his criminal justice degree in December. Will be a 24-year-old rookie.”

“Strengths: Has rare size with a very thick build and a huge power base. Can generate power from his lower half. Exceptional weight-room strength. Tied for the most bench-press reps (35) of any defensive lineman at the Combine and has a 650-pound squat. Can ragdoll blockers and beat the double team. Moves well for his size. Showed well vs. better competition (see Baylor). Does the extras and is always looking to work.

Weaknesses: Overaged. Fatigues easily and technique fades – will stand straight up out of his stance. Only shows one gear and does not play fast or consistently finish. Does not drive through ball carriers. Is late to see and react to misdirection. Minimal career production against lesser competition. Limited pass-rush arsenal.

Future: A gargantuan, power player with the versatility to play anywhere along the line. Is still very much a developmental project and has a lot to learn, but is willing to put the work in and has unique size, strength and movement skill to mold.

Draft projection: Fourth- to fifth-round pick.”

He was projected as a 4th-5th round pick and we got him in the 7th?

Nice!

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS  Imposing, wide frame. Displays powerful upper half with ability to manhandle centers or undersized guards. Can eat blocks and command his spot. Uses his hands well down the line of scrimmage against the run and has the tools to become a factor against the run as a pro.

WEAKNESSES  Fails to fire off the ball with quickness or explosion. Plays with straight legs, leading to inconsistency in his forward charge after contact. Motor runs hot and cold depending on game he's having. Turns into bored pass rusher if initial pass rush is quelled. Still learning to use strength to be more effective bull rusher. Has limited play radius against the run.

DRAFT PROJECTION  Round 7 or priority free agent

BOTTOM LINE

Big-bodied defensive tackle who could find a home as a two-gapping nose guard in a 3-4. Simon is 24 years old and is coming off of a knee injury, but he has noticeable power and shows potential to slow the run in the middle of a defense. He needs much better pad level and plenty of coaching for his potential to be unlocked.

We can probably do this all night.   Find positive or negative profiles on the player.  We also have to consider the source of the profile.  The above is from NFL.com, which seldom slams players.

Fact is, what we are actually talking about is the odds of this player being on the final 53, or the PS.  Both Snacks and Barnes started on the PS.

Right now, barring injury, Simon is #3 NT on the Jets.    I am willing to bet that he will be on the PS.  In view of the fact that Snacks is a FA next season, it is very possible Simon will be on the full team next season.

I took a look at the Game tape of this kid and what I saw was a prospect who is stout at the POA but who offers much more in the way of getting to the QB. He's like an in-shape Kenrick Ellis and just maybe the Jets may have scouted themselves into a better Jason Ferguson.

The weird one here is the next pick that the Jets traded for Zac Stacy

Just means we aren't relying on Ridley to recover from his injury and be back to playing form. Stacy gives us a contingency / competition in camp.
