How this whole DL Contract Situation might Play Out

Wilkerson     2011 Draft  will play 2015 under his 5th year option at $6mil +

Harrison       2012 UDFA will play 2015 under his RFA 2nd rd. tender @ $2.3mil +

Having ALL the leverage the Jets either lock Mo up long term at their price or have him locked up through 2016 with the Franchise Tag.

Or... he can be traded next yr. for a high 1st round pick.

Harrison should be given an extension at around 4 yr/$24 mil extension to keep the young man motivated and in-house

Now here's where we start getting the flexibility to keep these guys in the fold:

2016

Cro($8mil) Gilchrist($6m)Giacomini($4m)Ivory($2m)Cumberland($2m)Babin($2m+Vickerson=$3m)Fitz($3m)

= $28m+/-in savings + increase in salary cap space=Approx. $38m in 2016 cap space

That should allow us to sign Richardson to a contract extension next year at around the same price as Big Mo= $13m/yr

2017

Ferguson and Mangold will account for $21 mil in Cap Space.... that will somehow be renegotiated to $15 between them.

Marshall may be ready to leave with an $8.5 mil savings.

Harris $6.5m

Revis?$9m in savings

We will begin shedding the bigger contracts as MacDaddy has players moving up the depth chart.

The other way we can play this is to allow Harrison to leave as a FA and perhaps get a #3 or #4 Comp pick for him while locking up Mo and Sheldon long term?

Same goes for Coples if he has a good year... do you let him walk and get a 3rd or 4th comp pick?

Look forward to hearing how you guys would play this!

If Muhammad Wilkerson signs that franchise tag tender ,and than the Jets can't trade him( about 14 million to pay him under the franchise tag). A lot of team thought they could trade the player under franchise tag. Raiders plan to do that with C Woodson. He messed up there plans by signing the tender - was there player. ( got hurt and missed a good part of year and than signed big contract with the Packets - the rest is history.

The Jets put him under the franchise tag , he will almost certainly be an unrestricted FA in 2017 . ( not signing with jets as there will be some bitterness)

The best thing the Jets can do is pay Muhammad Wilkerson what he's worth.

True DAT!

Hoping that Wilkerson, Richardson and Williams can stay together for the next 6 years.

Let Harrison walk next year and get a comp pick or trade him... I think he'll be in demand as a pure 3-4 NT and let TJ Barnes step in and take his place.

Coples is the "X" factor... Do you keep him after 2016? I guess it all depends on how he plays this yr.

Drafting Williams might keep Wilkerson from holding out.... but if he does, there won't be too big a drop-off in talent IMO

Super unlikely we cut all those players, and really unlikely we cut Marcus Gilchrist. We just signed him. Good chance on Cro if MacDougle or Milliner develop,

Doesn't matter though as we have a completely clean cap situation, and will have a ton of room next. We can sign Mo, Sheldon in successive years and likely Snacks as well without mortgaging the future if Mo will take reasonable money. We are not paying him $20 million a year. Guaranteed money will be the factor. But we don't sign Mo till next year. If a playoff team has a rash of injuries on the DL, we may get offered 1st rounder plus this year as well.

It is really not influenced by Sheldon it is influenced on Geno. If Geno becomes the guy, he has priority. If he fails and we need to look to Petty then there is more for DL.

The Gilchrist contract has been structured to be in essence a 1 yr. deal. Hoping Miles, Williams, Walls, Curtis Brown or the UDFA they just signed  from Syracuse can slide into that spot. He's not all that great from what I've seen in SD but he was playing out of position.

We also have like 90 people on the roster right now.... believe me when I say we will be cutting a TON of players.... usually the most expensive go 1st if they're replaceable with cheaper talent

Time will tell. One thing that was overlooked about all the contracts we did is they are all 1, 2 or 3 year conrtracts in reality, so we are paying as go and we are in fantastic shape going forward with a much larger effective cap than it seems,

No team is trading a high pick for Mo Wilkerson when hes earning 14m. We also lose all of our leverage next year as most franchise players hold out until they receive the stipulation of "Cant be franchised again".

Mo needs to get resigned ASAP. Harrison is trade bait that no ones wants as of yet. We wouldn't have put a 2nd round tender on him if we weren't listening to offers on him.

Most NFL owners have to spend big sums over the next two years because of the CBA's "minimum spending floor"

The Dolphins have been the second biggest spending franchise in the NFL since 2011
Eight NFL franchises have to dole out over $100 million in new contracts over the next two years.

The tide in the NFL could be turning this offseason.

Up to this point the NFLPA has taken a beating when it comes to the new collective bargaining agreement, which ushered in a new financial era of the NFL in 2011, one that featured the middle class being squeezed.

However, the tide might be turning this offseason because of a little known poison pill called the “minimum spending floor,” which requires every NFL team to average spending at least 89% up to the salary cap floor from 2011 to 2016.

If they don’t meet the 89% floor the owner of each franchise not in compliance will have to write the NFLPA a check for the difference. The NFLPA has latitude to disperse a team's shortfall to players on that team during this period. If the entire league's spending is under 95% over the 4 year period, the NFLPA can disperse that shortfall how it wants. This shortfall is secondary to any shortfall under the 89% requirement.

I’m told NFL owners would rather spend that money to improve their teams – either signing free agents or giving out extensions - than write an annual refund check (the floor comes into play in 2016 and exists every year moving forward in this new CBA).

Some big spending teams, like the Miami Dolphins, which have distributed $482 million in cash and commitments, will have no issue meeting that requirement. But half the league will be forced to spend $70 million-plus over the next two seasons to reach the minimum spending floor.

  • this spending poison pill is nothing but a way for owners to save up some chunk of cash, and profit off it before they are forced to spend what they should have already spent. Kind of like gift cards.

And eight franchises – the Raiders, Panthers, Jaguars, Jets, Chargers, Cowboys, Colts and Giants – have to dole out over $100 million in actual cash – not contracts – over the next two years. That means we can officially see some money being spent on larger signing bonuses, and more guaranteed money these next two seasons.

Here’s a list of the new money that needs to be spent by every NFL team, which is provided to us by Jimmy Halsell, an NFL agent and contract analyst, and it’s paired with the projected salary cap space for 2015.

* These sums will change as teams sign free agents, draft picks and restructure deals within this month, this offseason, and the next two years.

* Teams in bold are franchises in the red that must reduce their cap commitments to meet the league's projections. The salary cap was set at $143 million for 2015, but most teams also feature cap carryover.

Firstly,

How many franchised players have been traded for 1st round picks OR MORE over the last few years?  That return is very rare.

Secondly where are you getting 5 years and 60m?  No chance he takes that little.

The Jets reached out to Wilkerson after the draft to let him know they still wanted him. Like most negotiations, this is now going to be about dollars. How much is Wilkerson looking for and how high are the Jets willing to go? CBS Sports reported Wilkerson is looking for $40 million guaranteed. By comparison, Texans star J.J. Watt, who plays the same position, received $51 million in guaranteed money in a deal he signed last year.

Wilkerson is looking for 40million guaranteed, and likely 13-13.5m per season.  AKA he's looking to be the third highest paid Dlineman in the league after JJ Watt and Suh.

You referenced an article about the cap going up, and everyone having cap room. It only supports the argument from Wilkerson's camp in which he deserves more money due to the salary cap going up from a few years ago. Wilkerson is about to get Franchised, or reach Free Agency next year. He is in the drivers seat and has total leverage in all negotiations. There is no way he is taking some team friendly deal to stay here now. Idzik was foolish not to lock him up sooner.

As of now the Jets have the flexibility to get Mo signed with a good chunk given this year as a SB and deferring the larger cap hit to 2016 and beyond when larger contracts begin to be dropped off the Jets payroll. Cromartie, Marshall and even perhaps Coples could account for $23m alone in savings if they don't perform up to their contracts. In 2017 Ferguson/Mangold will be re-negotiated to save on their combines $22 mil.

What I'm saying is the Salary cap is going up and the players salaries are going up also.

If the trend of the last two years continues, it can be estimated that the 2016 NFL salary cap will once again increase $10 million, to a total of $153.28 million. That number would mean that the Jets should have around $15 million in cap space not counting expiring contracts. I think the Jets will be in at around $25-$30  million in cap space next year. There is room to pay Wilkerson the $12 - $13 mil avg. he will be getting. In 2017 Richardson will be playing under his 5th yr. option. He'll need to be signed but by then Harris and others are gone.

You can't think in a 2014-2015 bubble.... the NFLPA has made it where these guys are going to get paid as they should.

Mo is only 25... this is a perfect time to lock him up! He's worth it and will only get better now that Williams takes the double teams away from him
