Bryce Petty All 22 Film vs Michigan State

This was the game that really raised Petty's stock in my eyes.  Mich St. has a reputation as an

excellent defensive team and they had quite a few pro prospects playing for them:

Waynes

Jones

Calhoun

Petty "destroyed" them particularly Waynes.  He's definitely worth investing a year of coaching into

and seeing if he can become an NFL QB

I watched that video right after we drafted him.  What jumped out at me is how he really put the torch to Waynes.  Now I don't know if says more about Pettys' passing or Waynes cover skills or Baylors offense in general, or even some combination of the three, but it was an eye opener.  I thought the Michigan State staff was going to break out a fire extinguisher because Waynes was getting burned so bad.

It's a decent tape, and I only watched about the first 7 mins or so, because I don't have quite as much time this week.

However, couple of the things I noticed so far (again, only a fraction of the plays)

+ Very Quick release

+ Can move outside of the pocket

-  Almost all the throws, notice that he's only looking at one side of the field, and just using his progressions there.  Only saw one throw where he went from one side to another.

-  I feel like sometimes his release is so quick, he doesn't use his legs that much.

The fact that he is used to getting rid of the ball so quickly immediately puts him at an advantage over most other young QBs.  Geno is way too indecisive sometimes and it kills him.  Petty doesn't make many reads across the field, but he does get rid of it and usually throws it to the correct shoulder of the receiver, minimizing the chance for interception.

Yes, Petty will have to learn pro-style offenses, and commanding the huddle, making mulitple reads etc.  But that stuff can be worked on with a redshirt year or two.  He seems to be intelligent enough.

What isn't fixable is the natural ability to fling the ball downfield, so it's a good thing Petty is already top 5 in the NFL in that category.  40 yard passes for him look like 30 yard passes for other QBs.  If the light bulb ever goes on with this guy, he could be really special.

Right now it's all just potential, so time will tell.  But you can't get a much better risk/reward than this pick.

Probably no fault of his own but he went to his first receiver every time, and stared them down as well. Thats not to say he can't handle the pro game but he certainly did not scan the field much. I think, er I hope he can learn to go to 2nd and third receivers and adapt to the pro game because I really want this kid to succeed. hes got the arm and the smarts obviously the big question is will it translate to the field in the pro game.

That's the beauty of the pick...they Jets have finally drafted a QB that doesn't have to start from day one.  You concerns are completely valid and shared with many of us...now he just has to grow as a QB while Fitz/Geno start.

Agree. We haven't had that kind of luxury since 2000 when drafting a young 4 year senior in Chad Pennington, he rode the pine for 2 1/2 years until he got his shot and he was LIGHTS OUT until the injures mounted and Herms/Bradway's players had been incorporated into the team.

Petty, if he sits 2 years, will be AMAZING. Most young & out of college QBs need to sit & learn for a few years, THEN this league can begin to have solid QB play again. ThE current system forces them to play too early & that's why they bust so regularly
