Any tips on Richmond, VA?

Richmond is one of the better beer towns in the country. Hit up Hardywood for sure. Great brewery, they put out a gingerbread stout once a year that is top notch. Isley and Legend are also great. I know Stone is building a brewpub there as well, but I don't think it's done yet.

Yeah don't go

This.

Richmond is a dump.  Third Tier Corporate Offices, Abandoned Industry, and low-socio-economic dumphoods.

Unless you're required to go there for business, why on earth would anyone choose to go to Richmond?

If you want to visit VA, do Northern VA/DC/Civil War Battlefields or do Chesspeake/Norfolk/VA Beach.  The rest of the State is pretty meh, frankly.

And no Rutgers, Stone isn't done yet, still being built.  Richmond is ok for beer, but NoVA is far better tbh.

Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area is great.  Richmond is Memphis without the Grizzlies.

I think we'd disagree on "great", VA Beach and thereabouts isn't a personal favorite for me either.  Skip that and do OBX every time, all the time.

Virginia Beach is a great family destination for vacation plus Busch Gardens and Williamsburgh are close by.  Newport News has some excellent bars and restaurants.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Wanting to do a road trip and looking at a five hour radius.  I've hit most of the major cities in that range but not Richmond.  No specific reasons, just haven't done one in a while.

The problem with VA beach is that if you go a block or two inwards you are smack in the middle of the hood. Coastline has some cool spots but I wouldn't go there on vacation you can do better.

You can say the same thing about most touristy places.  Go two blocks east or west of the strip in Vegas and see if you can make it back I dare ya

Not sure if you or the family are interested, but I think they moved all the tanks from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds down to Fort Lee which is a bit south.  Sort of just outside their beltway.  I haven't been since they moved it, but when I was a kid we went to Aberdeen a few times and it was pretty impressive.  I think it is called the Army Ordnance Museum.

Lee is about a half hour south of Richmond in Petersburg. There's also a famous civil war battlefield there.

Family is in London for a month so I'm flying solo : o )

Found out about a Slash/Stone Temple Pilots concert on Sat though....everything is up in the air.

I've heard good things about Aberdeen though...would love to get down there.

Good thing we didn't go then!

I don't think there is much left in Aberdeen.  It used to be super cool.  You just drove into town and there were tanks on the medians for miles.  Then there was a huge yard with acres of tanks and armored vehicles and an indoor museum, like an airplane hangar.  Sort of like the "other" air and space museum in Dulles, only for tanks.  Too bad it is gone because I drive by about six times a month.

I saw the Scott Weiland band in March at the Ottobar in Baltimore.  Decent enough show, but nothing great.  I think the guitarist died a week or two later. I'm not sure what from, but he was pretty washed out in the mix.  The drummer was great. My friends were pissed that he didn't play much old stuff. I think they went to see the "new" STP a couple of weeks ago, but I begged off. If they were playing with Slash I'd probably have tried to go.

I saw a viral clip of him on youtube a few weeks ago doing "vasoline" and you couldn't understand a word he was saying.  Chester from Linkin' Park apparently does a great impression of a sober Weiland  heading up STP.

Still not sure about going..it's an all-day show but I only care to see the last two bands.  No idea what it'll be like if I'm trying to get in at 7pm.

Seeing FNM and Foo Fighters this summer though...pumped for that.

What does a sober Weiland sound like?  Nothing like STP I am sure.  I was at the show at MSG where Aerosmith came out.  I have been thinking about trying to get to that Foo FIghters show at RFK, but it is on 4th of July.   More likely I will head to the beach.

Good point on Weiland...dude is a mess.

I think the show we're going to is a few days after the RFK show...6th or 7th in Trenton I believe.
