Are the Jets in for an Eric Decker Resurgence?

Wide receiver Eric Decker is entering only his second season with the New York Jets and it certainly feels like a resurgence is in order. Yet a closer look at Decker's numbers quickly reveals little drop off from his days in Denver. It wasn't all about Peyton Manning.

Decker had two stellar years with the Broncos in 2012 and 2013, after two building block years to start his career. During those benchmark seasons, he was targeted 123 and 137 times, respectively. He put up 1,064 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2012, followed by 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2013. To add to his shiny stat lines, Decker averaged 12.5 and 14.8 yards per catch in those two seasons with Denver.

As a New York Jet last season it seemed Eric Decker took a step back, if only because the Jets stunk and the offense seemed more than anemic at times in 2014. He saw all his numbers decline, true, but none of that had to do with the player.

On an offense lacking weapons, Decker was the Jets' primary target last season. He saw the ball 40 times more than the next Jet receiver and yet still had less targets than either season in Denver. New York targeted him 115 times last year and Decker delivered. He averaged 13 yards per catch for 962 yards and 5 measly touchdowns.

It's safe to say that Eric Decker was a lone bright spot last season on a New York passing offense that sputtered at its best. Although the quarterback situation remains gray, the 2015 New York Jets have positioned their offense for an Eric Decker resurgence.

If last year was a down year for Decker, with under 1000 yards and less than double digit touchdowns, then watch out. He won't be getting many double teams in 2015 from opposing defenses with Brandon Marshall across the field. Expect the targets to go up slightly as the yardage numbers creep back over the 1000 yard mark.

In the area that matters most, getting into the end zone, the Jets will be better and so will Eric Decker. Gang Green was last in the league in the red zone last season, scoring a touchdown only 36% of the time. After adding a body of bruising running backs to their backfield, the Jets can work the ball to the corners and get both Marshall and Decker those precious touchdowns.

New York won't be playing from behind much in 2015 either, and when they do it won't be very far. The Jets defense is looking scary good. All of this means more time and efficiency on offense, time for the ball to reach Eric Decker on the outside. With few drives requiring the deep ball play after play, the Jets can work the field with precision, open up the flat for Decker, and let him stretch his legs against the safeties and cornerbacks in the league.

Eric Decker managed a solid season on a bad team last year. All that changes in 2015, as the New York Jets rebound and Decker shines anew.

He'll have a productive year if he can stay on the field. He would have eclipsed a thousand yards last season if he wasn't so dinged up for that four or five game stretch, that hammy held him back a good deal. I like the depth though; first time in years our #1 guy could go down and we're still fine 1-3, instead of starting Chaz Schillens or Greg Salas. I will never get over the fact that our team started Chaz Schillens. Chaz f*cking Schillens.

Clyde Gates, David Nelson and Ben Obomanu are all like, hey what about Kellen Winslow Jr.?

I'm going to stop talking now before there's an unfortunate golf cart accident and we're left starting Shaq Evans, Enunwa and Hakiim.

BMarsh driving, Decker in shotty, Kerley, Smith in the back seat with Posey sitting bitch?

It's strange that the hammy was left out of the article as though it never happened. To say nothing of the first Miami game where there were like 7 pass attempts through the first 58.5 minutes of the game (to be fair, though, one was a pass Decker dropped).

Think it was a bit more than 4-5 games. Injured it right before the season, then re-injured it again in week 2, and missed the Bolts game outright in week 5. Looking back on his headlines, by his own testimony he wasn't claiming to be 100% until mid-late November after the bye week. Now few people are totally 100% all season long, but even leading up to the game in week 6 he was still barely participating in practice. Our QBs did him no favors for most of the season, but limiting reps with either of them in practice for most of the season surely didn't help.

I see our red zone offense improving because we won't have a coordinator that tries to outsmart himself or get cute with play calling inside the 20. Decker was put in a position he shouldn't have been in as the number 1 and played well even after being rushed back after injury.

He should have never had his deal re-done.  Very average receiver with an inflexible contract for at least a couple of years.  Thanks Idzik.

Totally agree.  It will be interesting to see if Posey challenges him for playing time.  From what I have seen, he appears to be a pretty good route runner and might be a little faster than Kerley.

Don't leave out Stephen Hill.  I can't believe this is what Geno had to work with as a rookie... smdh.

I thought just under a thousand yards with the hammy and Geno passing to him was a pretty good year.  But he should do better this year with the supporting cast.

It was and he should.

It's hard to judge a receiver when The quarterbacks throwing to him are always terrible get out-of-the-way a$$hole The quarterbacks throwing to him are always terrible get out-of-the-way a$$hole learn how to ******* drive **** you

Did Geno kick him in his hamstring too?  The guy almost had 1,000 yards receiving last year with and Geno was his quarterback for most of them.   He has personally come out publicly and defended Geno on more than one occasion.

I didn't say he didn't like him. I said it's hard to judge receivers when the QB sucks.

I read what you said and I said he had almost a 1,000 yards with that QB that sucks.  That is with being injured with a bad hamstring for almost half the season.

He got a good deal for himself being one of the only good wideouts in FA after 2013 BUT Erik Decker is worth it.  He is a great all around receiver.  He is not a scrub, he is a solid pro and is a legit second tier receiver which he is getting paid to be.  I like Decker's prospects this season.

Hey Evelyn Wood, my post referred to Kerley.
