Best Case Scenario.... Coples goes Beast Mode in Camp.

I rarely hear Coples name come up when discussing the whole Mo Wilkerson contract situation.

If Mo sits out OTA's and TC, and "Q" has a great camp playing Mo's position.... I could easily see MacDaddy swinging a deal for Mo.

Maybe for a QB/ OLB or "Stud" OL(who's still young) or future draft picks.

"Q" is as big as Mo(height wise/will need to add some weight as a 3-4 DE), as strong as Mo, faster than Mo..... but he may also be "softer" than Mo.

If he steps up and plays as well as Mo, he plays under his rookie deal through 2016 and won't see FA until 2017. If he plays up to a #1 pick this

year, you could conceivably trade Wilkerson and Coples in back to back years for an extra high draft pick or players and still have Richardson and Williams lining up together for the next 6 years!!

Richardson gets extended in 2017..... Leo in 2019.

A lot depends on Coples.

If we suddenly have a QB, then sure stay dominant for as long as possible.

And if we don't have a QB.... do you use your dominant chess pieces to try and get that QB?

Just trying to see where people stand on this. I know there have been a few threads on this but no one seems to be giving any consideration to Coples.

It all seems to be Leonard Williams being the de-facto replacement for Mo. I'm wondering if "Q" steps up, how that would impact the Wilkerson equation?

Probably not, because most teams understand QB >>>>>>>>>>> DE.

Your scenario draws one majorly false conclusion, and it is that teams are willing to hand over a franchise QB for a defensive end. So, I say probably not, because teams aren't like to make a deal with us.

Instead, I figure we'll just be dominant all over our defense, and have QB we hope doesn't lose games single-handedly.

I never stated that someone would trade a franchise QB straight up for Mo.... I was talking more about getting a high first for Mo if there is another "can't miss" type QB in the draft. Trade 2 firsts to go up and get him.

My mistake.

Only defensive player you could concievably trade for a franchise QB is JJ Watt. And even then, the team trading the defensive guy better throw in a first-rounder or two to make it work.

As I mentioned to Ape, I was thinking more in the line of Draft picks for Mo.

I would love to see him stay and hope Idzik can figure out how to parlay the abundance of talent at the DL position into future talent at more positions across the board

What is the precedent for the return in a trade for a guy like Mo? I've heard people talking about getting multiple 1st round picks which sounds way over the top to me. I'm not even sure if you can get a single 1st round pick for him.

It's not that he isn't a great player, but how many established players can you name that got traded for a 1st round pick? Revis, yeah, in a deal where Idzik ripped off Tampa Bay big time. Harvin maybe? What a mistake that was for Seattle.

If the Jets move Mo and if they move him for anything less than a 1st round pick, then the Williams pick wasn't a value pick at all.

Coples gets a bad rap a lot of the time but I thought he played pretty well especially the second half of the season.  I think Bowles is going to really be pleasantly surprised at just how good he really his.

The Pats got a 1st for Seymour who was starting to slow down a bit.  They would for sure get a 1st though maybe not a high 1st and perhaps another pick.  I certainly would not look into dealing him until after this year.  In my mind the ball is in his court.  If he wants to get paid the big dollars he has to play great, all year, not just half a year.

Do you think Bowles keeps him @ OLB or tries to fit him in on an already overcrowded, stupendously talented, DL?

Absolutely. He is going BEAST at OLB; there will be times he may have his hand in the dirt but I can see Bowles moving him all over the place and him being our version of Mario Williams.

If there's one guy on our team I don't want to block or get hit by its Coples. Not sure who created this myth of him being soft just because off the field he looks like he's about to fall asleep 90% of the time.

Yep I totally agree and now he will be matched up one on one more often than not. It is not going to be pretty......

I think he had 3 confirmed "kills" (IR'ing somebody) last season. 2 running backs he almost decapitated with his trademark clothesline coming off the edge and just grabbing their heads like Hulk would with his palm and ripping their helmets off, and a QB on a late hit I think (Locker?). He doesn't have the same crazy personality of a Lyle Alzado or Bill Romanowski but he has that same playing style.

Remember when Rex was an idiot for playing him out of position?

I take it Bowles is a genius for this move?

I didn't think he was an idiot move at all; It just took time for Coples to make the the adjustment.  Not to mention the ankle injury he suffered in camp that had bothered most of his first year at the position; he also need to lose about 15-20 pounds which he did.  Last year because of our horrendous secondary, Rex actually had him dropping to coverage a lot more than he probably planned, but in doing so, Coples did show some ability in that area.

I can't wait to see him and Mauldin line up together; it will be "Fire and Ice", pick your poison.

He's an OLB in the base 3-4 defense. Even with Mo absent I doubt they move him to DE. They know Mo will be back eventually, so it's a waste of time. Q needs the snaps at OLB, we all know he can play Mo's position without having to prepare really, he can just dive in and be just as effective. I think right now either Bowen or Vickerson is taking his spot at DE. Leonard probably lines up with the 2nd team for now I'd guess.
