flgreen
Todd Bowles: Jets will have QB competition but job Smith's 'to lose' 18m - NFL GENO SMITH +4 more Play Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets don't have a quarterback controversy -- yet. Right now, it's quarterback confusion. One week after offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said he expects Geno Smith to be the opening-day starter, claiming a Smith-Ryan Fitzpatrick competition never was a consideration, coach Todd Bowles took his turn at the microphone Wednesday and presented a different picture. Geno Smith is the Jets' No. 1 QB, says Todd Bowles, who clarified that he will receive competition for his job in training camp. Al Bello/Getty Images Bowles said Smith is the No. 1 quarterback, but that the backups -- Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms and rookie Bryce Petty -- will be competing against him. "I view it as an open competition, with Geno being the starter," said Bowles, commenting for the first time since Gailey made headlines. "It's his to lose. It's Ryan's to take. It's Bryce's to take. It's Matt's to take." Bowles, reiterating what he has said throughout the offseason, said Smith will go into training camp as the first-team quarterback and will receive the majority of the reps, adding: "Come camp time, there will be competition at that spot. I've said it from Day 1." Yes, he has, but Gailey changed the narrative last week when he all but handed the job to Smith, who threw 34 interceptions in his first two seasons. Gailey said it "wasn't a thought" to have an open competition, declaring the plan is to have Smith start in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns. "That's the way we expect it to be," Gailey said. "Unless something happens with an injury, something that you don't foresee, that's how we anticipate it going." Gailey said there's virtually no way Smith can lose the job based on practice and preseason games. Bowles contradicted that, saying "it's no different than any other position. Whoever starts out with the first team will get the first-team reps as [performance] dictates," the preseason included. On face value, there seems to be a disconnect between Bowles and Gailey, although some of the confusion can be attributed to semantics. A lot depends on the definition of "competition." Bowles said it's "open," yet he stated his philosophy is to give the first-team players most of the practice reps. Got that? Bowles said he and Gailey have the same take on the quarterback situation, insisting, "We're always on the same page." He said Gailey has a "very matter-of-fact personality" and was just responding to a question based on the current circumstances at the position, mainly Fitzpatrick's injury and Petty's inexperience. But Fitzpatrick's injury -- a broken leg, suffered last December -- no longer is keeping him out of drills. On Wednesday, he practiced for the first time in team drills, working behind Smith, who had a spotty day. Fitzpatrick has at least one edge on Smith in that he already knows the offense, having played under Gailey from 2010 to 2012 with the Buffalo Bills. For his part, Smith said he's pleased with his rate of development in Gailey's system. As for the competition -- or non-competition, depending on whom you ask -- Smith said he tunes out the noise. "I always felt it was my job to go out and lead this team," he said. "That's the way I look at it. It's not going to change my approach or the way I go about my business. I look at myself as the type of guy who can lead this team and do the right things."

Gas2No99
Petulant overreaction is classic amongst this fan base & forum. They could claim "Bruce Springstein is his Shido-shi" and it wouldn't matter because until the season starts and the bullets start to fly, all this is speculative fodder. For all we know, we lose our #1 & #2 at QB by game 2 (recall the 2005 season?) it's all projection until injuries and regular season competition dictates otherwise. PS- bonus points for anyone who knows the movie pertaining that quote.......hint: "break bottom brick."

slats
What's funny is that nothing has changed on the QB front at all, including the over reactions to every word out of the coaches' mouths here. Geno was never just being handed the job, but it's still his job to lose. Bowles was just putting out the fire Gailey started with these comments, but never refuted Gailey's statement that the two of them spoke months ago about the QB position, and that they expected Geno to be the opening day starter. SouthernJet
jets got Fitz (no coincidence they got QB who knows Chans playbook 100%) to be Day1 starter if leg OK. Jets knew w/great defense they just need game manager who KNOWS playbook until a real QB 'of future' groomed (hopefully Petty)...Geno kaput since he has ZERO QB awareness. all he can do is scramble and hit primary WR if wide open. Cant read progressions quick enuf when primary covered , cant take that step and a half up in pocket as good QBs do under pressure (Geno the brainiac, turns around and scrambles backwards for 12 yard sack losses)

Bowles saw firsthand when they had Palmer in Arz that having a real offense helps the D tremendously. The Jets will not be a chorus line offense under Bowles/Gailey ( run-run-run-kick) . With viable offensive weapons for the first time in a half dozen years the Jets don't want a game manager which is why Fitz was brought in to be backup. This team will rise or fall with how well Geno and Gailey can maintain a real offense. If Fitz has to start either due to injury or ineptitude by Geno the Jets will be facing a long season. Bingo Nothing has changed. It is certainly in the Jets best interest for Smith to come out and take charge of the team from day one. That is what they are hoping for, and expect. They want to give him the majority of the reps during OTA's to give him every opportunity to keep the job, and lead the Jets. If he sucks again, Fitz will take over in camp. But that's not plan A. No , this in not a circus. This is the best way to go about it. if the competition is close Smith will keep the job. No pitch by pitch count of each throw the media gets to see in OTA's RIGHT NOW Smith is the #1 guy. It may not be that way in August. This whole drama is why most HC's don't let co-coordinators speak to the press often. If Bowles is smart he will learn his lesson and not let Gailey speak to the press again until he has to. I'll take mediocre in a heartbeat. My Thesauras also describes mediocre as unskilled, and inferior. As long as the Jet QBs play in an inferior manner, there will be a QB controversy, (no matter what the coaches say.)
flgreen
If Bowles is smart he won't let what the media or fans say bother him one iota unlike his predecessor. I'm pretty sure Bowles isn't going to make football decisions based on what the fans think. Least I hope not. But it's got to be aggravating, when you have made yourself clear, to having the media pound away at a point. HC is a stressful enough job. Think Bowles did a good job in putting the fire out. Of course the media is going to still hammer at it. Nothing they love more then a QB controversy. IMO 90% of fans understood that if Smith plays the way he has in the past he won't be the starter opening day. Only a few Geno die hards actually thought that Smith was the anointed guaranteed starter in Sept.

Fitz has 123 tds 101 picks and 11 rushing td's in his career.. One of some Jet fans favorite QB's has 128 td's 98 picks and no rushing td's. Fitz was a 7th rd pick the other was a 1st rd pick so it's fair to say Fitz is decent..

Geno is going in as the number 1; Fitz has to beat him out.
