Willie Colon compares Bowles to (loser) Rex Ryan

We actually don't know who Bowles is yet.  He comes across as a stoic, no nonsense kind of guy.  Bowles referred to Richardson's attendance at the OTA's as sporadic.  When talking about other players who weren't there, he said they had personal things to attend to.  I'm assuming here they had contacted him, and told him why they couldn't be there.  When asked about Richardson, he said he didn't know where he was, and hadn't spoken to him.  He quickly added that he wasn't required to be there .  He has to say that, or the NFLPA will start making noise.

Coaches want, and expect the players to be at "voluntary"  OTA's.  They at the very least expect a player to tell them why they can't be there.  They are installing a new D.  HC's want the players to be there.  Your right that alone really isn't a cause for concern.  Richardson also has his ill-advised "Pig's" comment behind him.   Under Rex players could say what ever they wanted to the media.  I have a feeling those days are done.

Like I said I don't know who Bowles is yet.  Going to be interesting to see how he deals with a star player if Richardson continues the free spirit approach.

Don't you mean the Free Speech approach??  :winking0001:

Free speech?  Really?    Perhaps you want to talk to Donald Sterling about that.

The first amendment doesn't prevent an employer from firing, or disciplining an employee for making statements that are embarrassing, or hurtful to the corporation.  It only apply' s to the government punishing, or attempting to silence any critics

EJ Manuel will eventually get the job. Cassel

EJ Manuel will eventually get the job. Cassell stinks

I hope you are right.  I hope he is good enough to start.  I love EJ.  He's a really good man and smart.

Relax I used a smiley but I don't recall many HC's tell players they can't speak their mind.. I realize many fans think the only big mouths around the Jets should be their fans.. :animal0029:

Face it, and not making excuses for him, Rex knew it was the last rodeo at the beginning of the season. All he had to do was see the make up of the team his GM put together for him. Yet, as much as I like Rex he should have went out kicking and screaming. Also, it great to have a good relationship with your players, yet when they begin disrespecting you and taking advantage it's time to kick some butt. I think Rex may have gotten "too" close to some of these guys and it distorted his own responsibilities. An sadly this foundation would have been tough to change had he remained another year or more.

Will be interesting to see if he repeats the same mistakes in Buffalo or learns from his experience with the Jets.

One thing is certain, even for the fans like me who liked Rex, it was time for a change and as of now, it looks as if we found a diamond in the rough in coach Bowles. Really looking forward to the season to see how it all plays out.

So, in other words, Rex neglected to do the job he was hired.  That alone should have meant that he was not given another chance to HC a team this offseason until he went back into the ranks as a coordinator or position coach and proved that he could do the job he was hired to do.  In all honesty, neglecting your responsibilities because you didn't get your way is pathetic, and Rex should be embarrassed by his performance in 2014.

I many ways your right, Rex did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. In other areas though, as we are beginning to discover he slacked off and gave certain players Carte blanc to do what ever they felt was good for them. At that point he was done with many of the other players he was trying to lead.

To be fair to Rex, he would kill with the defense we have in place now. He has a damn good one in Buffalo and I expect him to do well to start. Yet as I think he learned here,, there is more to being a HC at this level then just defense.

I also see now, that he gets too close to his players, which I believe creates dissension among the players not closest to him.

I still still think Rex can be a damn good HC if he adjust his skill set to too the many lessons he learned here.

Yet, so far, with his reaction to what has been said and perceived by players from last year, you still have to wonder.

In closing I would just like to add, we still don't know the full truth about the influence and pressure Idzik was putting on him and his staff regarding everyday football decisions

Rex is going to have a hard time when the Jets play the Bills. He has to coach his team and by the time game day rolls around, he will have to teach like 14 Jets a lesson. I hope he isn't calling the plays, that is a lot of responsibility for one day.

Glad to see someone else caught this!!!!

Based on the Geno decision alone (to start him after Rex said he was benched) says Idzik was way to involved in the game playing on the field and based on the talent he put out there his meddling was a disgrace!!

I honestly believe that Rex thought Woody understood this and this why he was hurt by his dismissal.

Rex truly thought that he was being the good soldier when in fact Woody didn't know he wasn't fully on with Idzik's incompetence!!!  This why Woody made the odd statement, IMO, of saying that the HC and GM would report directly to him and not just through the GM last winter.  I thought that it was extremely telling that Woody specifically cited Rex's failure to complain about the talent level and hence the GM as grounds for Rex's departure.

But more importantly those comments were IMO a direct swipe at Idzik and his insane isolation and undermining of Rex!!

Totally agree. Woody knew this was a team effort what happened last year.

Everyone can love Bowels all they want but I'll wait to see what's going on 3 years from now.

THIS. x1000....I like the direction the new front office is heading, but its still may. right now, its all talk. we will have to atleast witness a full season before anointing these guys the next great duo. again, I like the direction, but first time head coach coupled with a first time gm, lots of things can happen here

Colon says Jets accepted mediocrity last year, but not anymore

Riich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Veteran guard Willie Colon, who always has a finger on the pulse of the New York Jets' locker room, said Wednesday he can feel a greater sense of urgency under new coach Todd Bowles as compared to Rex Ryan. Under Ryan last season, there wasn't much of a pulse at all, Colon said.

"Last year, getting by and being mediocre was kind of OK at times," Colon told ESPN.com. "This year, we feel the competition level is high. You look around and you see legitimate ballplayers, working. It raises the competition level. You kind of feel like if you don't fit the mold of what Bowles wants, it'll be hard for you to survive."

This sort of thing happens when teams change coaches. The Jets enjoyed early success under Ryan, who led them to the AFC Championship Game in 2009 and 2010, but things became stale last season and everything fell apart. Player tardiness was an issue, and it became an offseason headline when, in an April radio interview, tight end Jace Amaro said "we had an issue with that last year. Guys just weren't accountable last year as much as they could be."

Ryan took umbrage, firing back at Amaro in a couple of interviews. Colon backed Amaro then, and he did it again Wednesday when speaking to a group of reporters.

Colon started off by saying he has "the utmost respect for Rex," but he added: "We had our issues last year. If you're asking us to be accountable, part of being accountable is being truthful -- and that was one of our issues."

He didn't name names, but there were well-documented instances of lateness and missed meetings (see: Calvin Pryor and Geno Smith). Those players are back, but some high-profile, set-in-their-ways veterans are gone -- namely Michael Vick, Chris Johnson and Percy Harvin. Those players had carte blanche under Ryan.

Colon said the overall attitude bothered him at times.

"When you go 4-12 and you fight your tail off and you know you're doing your best and it comes off as guys that maybe don't seem as passionate as you do about the game ... sometimes it does bother you," he said. "But Coach Bowles is the new sheriff in town. I believe in him and I believe in the direction he's going. I feel like we won't have those issues."

Colon said developing chemistry will be vital to the success of the team. "Chemistry" happens to be one of Bowles' buzzwords.

"Ultimately, we're here to win," Colon said. "It's not a day care. Everyone shouldn't be sent to the principal's office. You're paid to go to work and be the best you can be -- and be the best you can be off the field, too. That's what Coach Bowles wants from us and that's what we should want from each other."

Why do these guys talk so much?  Just put your head down and work.  And it seems like Amaro may have gotten himself into Bowles' doghouse by opening his pie-hole to knock Rex.  Why would Colon want to do the same?

Hi Troll. Ready for your 5-11 season under Rex?

Exactly the opposite.  I predict an 11-5.  I'm not a troll but it seems that there are some that prefer to stir up controversy as opposed to discussing football in a civil manner.

Yeah,  I am a little confused about Colon's comment too.   Just a few weeks ago,  Colon reported that he's a friend of Rex's and still talks to him.

Exactly, go stir up controversy on your teams site, not ours. Go circle the wagons.

I don't stir up controversy.  And,  social media is fair game.  If you play by the rules you get to post wherever you please. There are plenty of Jets' and other fans over at Bills Mafia.  Some are trolls,  most come in to do exactly what I am doing here.  That is to hear about what another AFC East Team is saying or doing.

In my honest opinion, you lost a good coach and hired a smack talking overrated one. He knows absolutely zilch about offense and can ruin a QB quicker than Reggie White. Doug Marrone was twice the coach Rex is, you guys will realize it around week 8 when your 3-5.

Personally, I liked Rex but he his time was up here.

Total agree Bruce.  I think the change is good for both teams.  We love him here in Buffalo.  With all the changes this offseason,  we just have to wait and see how all of this plays out on the field.  One thing for certain,  I haven't been this excited (during offseason) in years.  I am cautiously optimistic but can't lose fact that the Jets and Dolphins are also building too.

I am confused. Don't we give our loser coaches at least six years before we begin to hold them accountable for their record?

yeah plus rex really showed improvement at the end of each of the last two seasons. how can we evaluate him properly with no weaponzzz? maybe he can develop.

I liked Marrone while he was here.  However,  after he left I heard some pretty discouraging comments about his behavior towards our players.  Many criticized him for what he did to Manuel but I agreed with his decision.  We would have ended up in the tank if we resumed status quo (with Manuel).  I don't blame Manuel for all of this either.   Our OL was pretty bad and Hackett wasn't much better.  Think he was terrible IMO.

Why are we still talking about Rex Ryan? Honestly, I think we all should be the most excited about the upcoming season than we have been for a long te now.

Thank God you are here to keep us on track
