Positive differences

Recommended Posts

As we all know Championships aren't won in May but this off season has been a good one for the Jets.  New regime.  New players.  Renewed optimism.

I'm no insider but I'm an avid follower of our team.  I see many positive differences that I feel lead to winning.

Curious to hear what you all feel are the positive differences you're seeing now that will lead to sustained success/winning on the field.

My #1 - Players as the vocal leaders, not the coaches.  Cro has shown me a lot.  He and Marshall have really amped up the level of competitiveness in OTA's.  They are establishing a great culture of work hard/play hard that translates to player improvement/development, camaraderie and winning.  When the players push each other and hold each other to a standard of performance the coaches can coach and not beg.  I believe it's best when team leadership comes from the players.  We have strong, hard working leaders on our team (Revis, Sheldon, Mo - when he returns, Cro, Decker, Marshall, Mangold) and they seem to be taking the lead, not taking a backseat to the coaches.

When the players stop being satisfied with being mediocre, get fed the truth about performance expectations and police themselves to meet and exceed the standard is when you establish a winning culture.

I think we're starting to build that here and the players leading is a positive difference I'm thrilled to see...

positives to me

  1. No nonsense approach from GM through the entire coaching staff, all seem to be aligned
  2. Focused on the weakest part of team and signed four of the top free agent DB's to fix a problem (no band-aid BS)
  3. Good depth signings across the rest of the team, BPA approach to draft
  4. Prioritized scouting, cleaned house and built a new department that should hopefully improve future Jets drafts
  5. Practice on both fields, offense and defense competition, the Revis and Marshall "battles" will improve the team

Still need to see how this plays out on the field but so far so good

There are only two real positives that I'm concerned with at the moment:

1.  Rex Ryan is no longer the HC of the NYJ.

2.  John Idzik is no longer the GM of the NYJ.

Those two moves by Woody back in December might be the biggest cases of addition by subtraction in NFL history.

Bowles and Maccagnan are the icing on top of that already excellent cake.

In all honesty the move I am most happy with is finally getting rid of Bradway and the manner in which he ran the Jets college scouting dept.

It's truly amazing that he remained through 3 coaches and two separate GM's (after being demoted from GM himself) all while missing on player after player after player. Sure we hit a couple of times, but for the most part it's been an atrocity what the Jets have done on draft days. Especially in the later rds.

This may prove to be one of the most important changes made to the Jets in many years.

So you believe that Bradway, a scout, picked every player all these years? You actually know which players he chose, how?

And please tell us "the manner in which he ran the Jets college scouting dept"

Not sure if you realize this but scouts give a list of players to a GM they've scouted and give their write ups, ratings. It's up to the GM to make a pick after reading a bunch of reports. Bradway could have suggested players that became pro bowlers every year and had Tanny pick someone that another scout loved, we'll never know.

Agreed. The Teflon Don of NFL front offices. Not sure how he lasted so long.

Something to consider, with the dual field system Bowles uses, this training camp Geno may literally get 4 times the reps he did in last TC. Think about that.

Sorry, it's late. What does he do that's different?

He runs two complete fields of drills including 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 so in a day you have 1vs 2, 3 vs 4, 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4 so it's literally double the reps Rex used to run. Add in the fact that Geno will not be splitting 1st team reps, and he will get as many as 4 times the reps he did under Rex.

Im waiting for the posts about how all of Maccs draft picks are busts. I expect they start rolling in either during the preseason or after the first game of the regular season.

So, our DB's will have no excuses when they drop interceptions during the season?  :winking0001:

I recently told someone I just met I was a jets fans and he said, "I like what they are doing"

that was pretty cool, lol

I get that all the time & I live in New England.

Knowledgable Pat fans believe the Jets look to have finally gotten it right hiring Mac & Bowles.

They loved hearing Rex put his foot in his mouth.

The silence coming out of Florham park from the Jets brass & coaches is disconcerting to them.

Bowles replying to his thoughts on deflategate, "I'm only concerned about the New York Jets".

Refreshing.

Since it was determined that the early issues Marshal exhibited were because of his medical condition  and said condition has now been medicated, what exactly has this man done that warrants a label of being a malcontent or a locker room problem.

Why is it wrong to speak out against the issues that cause and or permit a culture of losing to become a cancer  ?

The Brandon Marshal that played for the Broncos was a good man with a medical problem.

The Brandon marshal that played for the Dolphins was a good man with a medical problem

The Brandon Marshall that played for the Bears was a good man who hated losing.

The Brandon Marshal that plays for the Jets is an excellent teammate who has shown leadership and wisdom thus far.

Thus far, what could any Jet fan find to not like about this man ?

D

Now does that really sound realistic to you?  A GM hires a guy to be the DIRECTOR of college scouting, which means he is the boss of and "directs" the college scouting dept and all of the college scouts, and then when the director hands in his reports about a "pro bowl" type player the GM disregards the report and picks a different guy just on a whim? Why have a scouting dept? Then why have a guy to direct the scouting dept?  When Macc got here the first thing he said was that the Jets devoted very little resources to the college scouting dept and was going to revamp the entire operation. Why say that?

Your argument is absurd.

I'd also like to add Bradway's GM record to the discussion as well.  Trading a #1 pick for Doug Jolley and using two number 1 picks to trsde up for Dewaye Robertson in the deepest DT draft in many years leading up to that year.  Oh... and he was fired/demoted as the GM don't forget. That should cover the back end of your argument.

The one consistent factor in our many years terrible drafting has been Terry Bradway.

It's one of the most ridiculous things that has happened around here =. How he made it so long is a baffling mystery.

Let's recap, it's absurd to not think scouts are in charge of drafting? What do you think GMs do?

He sucked as a GM, I get it. Not one of us know who he is responsible for recommending as a pick or who he recommended that wasn't picked, like Wilson and was ignored. All the rest is BS hot air, no one knows. If that's absurd so be it, I'm absurd to admit I don't know

What's absurd is to have a guy remain at a high level position in a specific dept, whether GM or Director of college scouting, and have that dept be a consistent weak link in the chain over many years. Why he stayed is very simple. It's because we had accountant types in the GM position and they needed a "football guy" to tell them who to pick from the college ranks.  Problem is Terry Bradway sucks at being that guy evidenced by the people he chose to pick while a GM himself.

I find it very difficult to believe that the same guy who traded two 1st rd picks away for the right to pick Dewayne Robertson all of the sudden became the voice of reason in the room after being demoted from the GM position. And that is why I believe getting Bradway out of the room when players to pick are being discussed is one of the better off season moves the Jets made this year.
