What were your thoughts on the Idzik press conference last season?

Last season, if you recall, John Idzik delivered a mid-season to the press conference which has been described by many as incomprehensible at best and utterly ridiculous at worst. What were your thoughts as that press conference transpired? Was it an honest attempt by Idzik to do damage control for a lost season, or was it just a terrible idea to begin with?

He's a rebel and a runner
He's a signal turning green
He's a restless young romantic
Wants to run the big machine

He's got a problem with his poisons
But you know he'll find a cure
He's cleaning up his systems
To keep his nature pure

Learning to match the beat of the Old World Man
Learning to catch the heat of the Third World Man

He's got to make his own mistakes
And learn to mend the mess he makes
He's old enough to know what's right
But young enough not to choose it
He's noble enough to win the world
But weak enough to lose it
He's a New World Man...

He's a radio receiver
Tuned to factories and farms
He's a writer and a ranger
And a young boy bearing arms

He's got a problem with his power
With weapons on patrol
He's got to walk a fine line
And keep his self-control

Trying to save the day for the Old World Man
Trying to pave the way for the Third World Man

He's not concerned with yesterday
He knows constant change is here today
He's noble enough to know what's right
But weak enough not to choose it
He's wise enough to win the world
But fool enough to lose it
He's a New World Man...

That was a man trying to avoid saying that his owner forced a sh*tty head coach upon him, and that head coach effectively stopped working in August.

He took the job.  He stood in that locker after one season and shouted out "this is our coach!!!" after a meaningless win to go 8-8.  He should be groveling at Rex's feet, because had it not been for Rex he would have never had a job in the first place.  Pretty much every self respecting GM turned down even an interview knowing Rex was part of the package.  It was the equivalent of offering an executive position in a corporation with the caveat that you need to keep a horrible employee that is essentially going to destroy your career long term, so the mailboy raised his hand and said "well I'll do it!" because he knows he'll never get that chaqnce again.  Idzik is horrible, HORRIBLE as a GM.

Idzik is a martyr, and any success that the new regime has will be built upon the foundation that Idzik laid in place with his own bloodied hands.

What a good question. I know it's very evenly split on people who thought it was a good and well thought-out press conference and those who were cringing uncomfortably while watching it. Totally half of those watching it were nodding in agreement with every sentence and every Jets fan wasn't cringing.

Maybe you're right.  Maybe Woody knew all along he had to endure 2 more years of Rex before he could really find some competent people in the FO, but he still needed to serve some blood for the fans.  So fire Tanny, hire the most incompetent mealy mouthed dipsh*t on the planet to endure those 2 years until the cap is finally clear.  Hell, maybe Woody was behind the airplanes and billboards all along!  :P

Klecko didn't rep this yet?  Rough day in anchor sales or he just doesn't like you?

This is an insane thread and with that I shall respond.

How anyone can support Idzik when he stated in that press conference that the Jets had more than enough talent on the team as then constructed is beyond me. That alone made me realize that the man was a boob!!!

The Jets weren't just an average team as far as talent goes but one of the worst rosters in the league

Idzik had to go and he was a joke!

It was a press conference that spawned a number of ill thought out billboards, and made those responsible a little cash, along with 5 minutes of fame.

You do realize those billboard got Idzik fired, right? Or do you not pay attention to the news that John Idzik got canned?

Woody made his own bed with Idzik when he specifically made it a parameter that he wanted an executive type for GM not a football guy. Last season completely sucked, but if did have the fortune of making Woody finally see the light that football teams need to be run by football people. not corporate executive MBAs and lawyers. Which is a great thing. Now we have a football guy as GM who so far seems brilliant, a completely overhauled FO and scouting staff, Bradway fired, a promising head coach and a staff of merit not Rex cronies. All Jets fans should be ecstatic about the Idzik press conference because it led to this complete tidal change in team philosophy. I have not been as excited about the Jets since Parcells because

Was Idzik seriously the best that we could do two years ago? I mean c'mon, there had to have been at least ONE GM candidate who had a brain cell or two that wanted the job.

Idzik is the best you can do when a precursor to getting the job is not being allowed to hire the 3rd most important person in the organization.

Those who generally are not down with criticizing Idzik seem to want to have their cake and eat it too.  They recognize that Woody put him in a tough spot yet don't readily admit he was a 2nd rate GM candidate as a result of the rule set in place.

Those who rip on Idzik feel he didn't bring in enough talent for Rex and that he "set him up to fail."  Which is equally a BS notion.  Idzik just wasn't great at his job and neither was Rex in the end.  It shouldn't be a surprise that they're now both gone.

The 3rd option, which I fully embrace, is that Woody Johnson, the common denominator for everything that's gone wrong with this franchise over the last 15 years, is a terrible owner.  However, I am glad he finally decided to leave the "big boy" decisions up to actual football people rather than a search firm.  The selection of a new GM and HC were taken out of his hands, which is a very good thing.

No matter which of the 3 is the "most correct", it's probably time to move on from the Idzik-Rex era.

What poor decisions was Woody directly responsible for?
