Brandt Report : Jets, Dolphins, Eagles among teams with best offseasons so far ~ ~ ~

Now that OTAs are in full swing, we've reached a turning point in the NFL offseason. The off-field moves that have dominated the past few months -- the free-agent signings, trades and draft picks -- are giving way to honest-to-goodness on-field action. As we leave the transaction-heavy portion of the offseason behind, I thought I'd review all the wheeling and dealing to see which teams have been most productive.

Below is my list of the six teams that have had the best offseasons, with five more to consider at the end for good measure :

1) New York Jets

Key additions : CB Darrelle Revis, DT Leonard Williams, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

When you add one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and the best defensive lineman in the draft, you know you've had a good offseason. The Jets ranked sixth in overall defense last season but 14th against the pass; Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine and Marcus Gilchrist will improve what was considered a weak secondary last year. Linebacker David Harris -- the quarterback of their defense -- was retained. Williams, meanwhile, will only bolster a fearsome front that already included Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson.

I'm a Geno Smith backer, and I think he can make good on the flashes of promise we've seen, especially under new coordinator Chan Gailey, who will iron out the erratic throws and forced passes and help Smith establish consistency. Receivers Brandon Marshall and Devin Smith, running backs Stevan Ridley and Zac Stacy and guard James Carpenter will further boost the offense and improve Geno's chances of breaking out. And if the young quarterback falters, New York can turn to veteran backup Ryan Fitzpatrick, whom Gailey knows well from their days together in Buffalo.

New head man Todd Bowles is an exceptional coach, and new general manager Mike Maccagnan has done a heck of a job, especially in the draft. Much depends on the quarterback play, but if Smith makes a leap, the Jets can definitely contend for a wild-card spot.

Been reading this stuff for 3 weeks now. We got an "A".... Great!

Let's focus now on OTA's, positional battles and TC

Why do you have to be so miserable? Would you prefer if they posted a negative article about the off-season?

We have been touted as having a top 5 off-season for 4 weeks now.... we all know it.

It's time to focus on play vs. Hype.

I had the same reaction. Why express irritability about a positive article that is a matter of one guy's opinion? We all know that the Jets have to show how good they are and win games. Nice to see the Jets organization getting practically universal kudos for a professional and smart job. After years of being the butt of media jokes, it's a refreshing change.

It deserves another thread? We've several of these "Jets among best draft" threads.

I bet you're the same guy who would praise an article bashing the Jets for yet another crappy draft/FA decision. You can't have enough of those articles, right?

I agree, what the board really needs is another Rex thread.  OH, how about a totally novel thread about if Smith is the starting QB?

The article by Gil Brandt just came out yesterday. why not enjoy it? If you're bored by compliments, you can always dredge up a thread about how the Jets don't have a quarterback and  can't possibly win anything if that makes you feel better. These articles are totally in the moment and have no predictive value, but they're still nice to see. I'll say it again, the Jets did an outstanding job this off-season. That much it seems everyone agrees on, except a handful of posters here, of course.

Go check my history of posts.... I never bash the Jets. I'm just tired of re-hashed articles being warmed over. Gil Brandt has had a couple of these.

FL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt ranked his top 100 prospects before the Draft. Now that the Draft is done, he is giving out power rankings based on the players each team selected and how they stack up with his rankings. The New York Jets ranked fifth in the league.

These are only opinions and mean nothing once the players actually take the field. It does seem like many professional analysts love what the Jets did, though.FL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt ranked his top 100 prospects before the Draft. 5. New York Jets: 224 points (5 players)

Overview: The Jets also got five Hot 100 players, including DL Leonard Williams -- the No. 1 player on Brandt's list -- with the sixth pick of the draft. They drafted the five with their first five selections, including two excellent-value picks on the third day -- QB Bryce Petty in the fourth round (103rd overall) and G Jarvis Harrison in the fifth (152nd overall). The Jets' second-round pick was WR Devin Smith, who was the 37th overall pick. He also was ranked 37th on Brandt's list.

The players (points)

No. 1 DL Leonard Williams, USC (100)

No. 37 WR Devin Smith, Ohio State (64)

No. 53 QB Bryce Petty, Baylor (48)

No. 91 OLB Lorenzo Mauldin, Louisville (10)

No. 99 G Jarvis Harrison, Texas A&M (2)

Add 1 or 2 for every analyst and we can have many more threads. Gheesh!!

Enjoy the circle jerk. It's June.... the draft was a month ago and OTA's are here.

I'm done with how good everyone thinks we are and more concerned about how good everyone is looking in camp.

I don't mind these threads at all. It's the off-season. Still don't get the hostility. Why is it a circle jerk to appreciate how the organization has handled free agency and the draft? You just seem cranky and irritable for no good reason. And saying you want to see how everyone looks going forward has nothing to do with it. Looking forward doesn't exclude enjoying what has already happened. Cheer up.

Gil Brandt has forgotten more about football than most people learn in a lifetime.

To me Gil Brandts like EF Hutton, when he speaks you should listen.

If you've ever had the privaledge to listen to Gil on Sirius NFL radio it's pretty amazing. Not only does this guy know where these young kids are from, he knows their parents name, high school coaches, juco schools ect.

He's a wealth of knowledge that blows away his cohosts.

This dude built the Cowboys early dynasties & still is as sharp as a tack.

The Jets have done good if Gil says so.

Great offseason, no one could have scripted it better. But we're at least a year away. This offseason's additions, along with another great draft next year, should set us up to legitimate contenders in 2016 and 2017. Maccagnan needs to find us an average QB though...

Im also done with these articles, no offense to any posters. Maybe it just the off season getting way too long, and just waiting to see the actual product on the field already.

Our season will come down to our QB play, which seems pretty lame unless Gailey can work a miracle. Another thing that will be interesting to see is if the NFL finally stops the scum Pats from cheating.

Lost in the debate over whether we need to keep hearing about how awesome Mike Maccagnan Is or not was Gil Brandt's opinion of Geno Smith:

and find a way to keep the talent together. Hope we can keep Mo, Sheldon and "Snacks" together while Leo hopefully develops into an All-Pro type player.

I hate to see Snacks go, but I can't see us paying $35-40 mil/yr to the DL

Hope Gil's right on his appraisal. We're a better team if Geno can do what Fitz does (manage a game) and can add the athleticism he can bring to the position.

I still think Fitz comes out of the Pre-Season games as the Game 1 starter.

I agree Gil Brandt is awesome and is so knowledgeable..   When ever he is on I stop to listen I also like Pat Kirwan (former Jet) on Sirius.

  • 3 weeks later...

do you think Bruce Irvin could be a target to really shore up that OLB since Seattle is giving some contract problems #Jetsmail

@RichCimini : Funny thing is, Rocco, the Jets wanted to draft Bruce Irvin in 2012, but they ended up with Quinton Coples. No, I don't think Irvin will be a target even if he becomes available. They drafted Lorenzo Mauldin for a reason, and his development would be stunted if he somehow ended up playing behind Irvin. Even though Irvin is a solid player, he's not a difference-maker. He had 6.5 sacks last season, including only two on third down. The Jets have enough bodies at outside linebacker, including young players like Trevor Reilly and IK Enemkpali. Let's see what they can do before reaching for the panic button.
