" Cover your eyes : An update on the Jets' 2014 draft class " ~ ~ ~

One year later, the Idzik 12 still has the look of a bad NFL draft.

It was supposed to be a watershed draft for the New York Jets, a 12-player haul that would replenish an eroded talent base, but the grim reality is that only one of the 12 picks will be a starter in 2015 and only two, maybe three are locks to make the team. Eight remain on the roster. It's one of the reasons why John Idzik is working in Jacksonville and why the Jets have a new front office and scouting department.

Anyway, let's take a look at the Idzik 12. Warning -- This review contains graphic material that could be harmful to impressionable fans :

Safety Calvin Pryor (No. 1 pick, 18th overall)-- He will start at strong safety, his natural position, and that should mean better results. Because of an ill-conceived secondary, he was forced last season to play 523 snaps at free safety, only 88 at strong safety, according to ESPN Stats & Information -- and he looked uncomfortable.

Tight end Jace Amaro (No. 2, 49th) -- The new coaching staff won't try to make him something he's not. He'll be an H-Back, not a traditional, in-line tight end. Rex Ryan's least favorite former player has a lot to prove. With six drops in only 53 targets, he had the second-highest drop percentage in the league.

Cornerback Dexter McDougle (No. 3, 80th) -- He has missed almost two full seasons because of injuries, so we're talking about some serious rust. He was only recently cleared for team drills. McDougle has some talent, but cornerback is a crowded position. At best, he could be the No. 4 corner.

Wide receiver Jalen Saunders (No. 4, 104th) -- He'll be remembered as one of the Jets' worst picks in recent memory. He showed nothing as a receiver, muffed a couple of punts, annoyed the coaches with his attitude and was released only a month into the season. He's currently with the New Orleans Saints.

Wide receiver Shaquelle Evans (No. 4a, 115th) -- After missing last season due to shoulder surgery, a healthy Evans has flashed some potential on the practice field. Problem is, he'll be buried on a crowded depth chart in training camp and may not get many chances.

Guard Dakota Dozier (No. 4b, 137th) -- He was an overdrafted, small-school player who basically took a rookie red-shirt season. The Jets have a lot of bodies at guard, so they're giving Dozier some reps at center. Versatility could be his meal ticket. Right now, he's facing an uphill battle to make the team.

Linebacker Jeremiah George (No. 5, 154th) -- Idzik drafted a 5-foot-11 linebacker for a coach (Ryan) who likes big linebackers. And people wonder why we say there was a disconnect between the two men. Fittingly, George plays for Idzik's current employer, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cornerback Brandon Dixon (No. 6, 195th) -- This was a nice, late-round find, but they cut him in training camp and he landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he averaged 10 snaps per game. He probably would've started for the cornerback-needy Jets.

Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (No. 6a, 209th) -- He looks the part, all right. He's a chiseled 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, but he's too inconsistent to be considered a serious threat to crack the top five at receiver. He's getting a lot of work, which can only help. He'll have to make a significant jump in training camp to make the team.

Linebacker IK Enemkpali (No. 6b, 210th) -- Like many of his fellow Class of '14 teammates, Enemkpali will need to do something in training camp to make him stand out from the more experienced competition at his position. Advice: Kick butt on special teams.

Quarterback Tajh Boyd (No. 6c, 213th) -- This was a Rex Ryan special, proof he should stick to evaluating defensive players. Boyd was painful to watch, got cut and ended up in the FXFL. Currently, he's hanging by a thread on the bottom of the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster.

Linebacker Trevor Reilly (No. 7, 233rd) -- Finally, a good draft pick. Reilly is a smart, hard-nosed player who made a mark on special teams. Every team needs a couple of guys like Reilly, who is backing up Calvin Pace at the strong-outside position.

I forget the name of the poster that felt the need to argue that Calvin Pryor was a FS.

Get ready guys.  Crusher is about to skip 3rd lunch to write 300 words about this part.

The grade on that draft right now is incomplete.  What Bowles and his staff do with the remaining eight

players this year will give us a better indication.  Because there are seven players that could make

a significant impact this year:

Pryor

Amaro

McDougle

Evans

Dozier

Enemkpali

Enunwa

That draft was an abomination

Hopefully Amaro and Pryor can develop, I think they'll at least contribute. Really want to see Pryor in his natural position this season. But even if they work out like they planned what about the rest of the draft? 10 picks and we have a special teaser from the bottom of the draft and maybe a 4th CB who is injury prone? It's actually hard to waste that. Many picks in a deep draft

I see two that could make significant contributions. Only one other than those two I'm sure even makes the team

Pryor and Amaro are set for big years.

IK can play, hoping his progression leads to cutting Babin and Pace.

Enunwa will probably fill in for whoever departs the jets first between decker and marshall. He's a tough WR whose apparently really polished his routes this offseason.

McDougle can have a good year covering TE's and playing the slot.

Jury is still out. We have a sh*t ton of young depth.

Straight troll piece. Using this criteria, every team in the NFL had an awful draft in 2014:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-team

It'll certainly look a ton better when McDougle finally gets a chance to show what he can do and Pryor/Amaro develop.  But it would seem that Idzik himself would admit that a lot of this draft was a failure when you consider Saunders, George, Dixon, and Boyd are no longer on the team.  No, you can't expect all 12 to be on the roster within a 2 year period, but these were guys that aren't even on the 2015 roster (1 got cut in training camp and another got cut 1 month into the season), and all of them were drafted before the 7th round.  It's the job of the GM not to have THAT many disastrous failures in the middle rounds.

I also would say Pryor over Bridgewater is going to go down as probably his worst decision in this draft class, even if Pryor works out ok.  All because Rex wanted the guy who can hit somebody.  That was a luxury pick for a franchise that could ill-afford one.

Rex Ryan's least favorite former player has a lot to prove. With six drops in only 53 targets, he had the second-highest drop percentage in the league.

In Amaro's defense, with such a crap roster of 2014 WRs, he had CB/safety coverage on him a lot. This year, with Jets upgraded 2015 WR corps, defenses will be forced to use a slower LB to cover Amaro. Amaro could be in for a high reception year (will be Jets QB #1 safety valve IMHO) and less drops as coverage isnt as close.

Just my humble opinion............

If Evans and Enunwa fail to make the team not hitting on at least one WR in last year's draft is an abomination...

Of all the picks the one I have the highest hopes for is Amaro.  I keep hoping he turns into Gronkowski lite eventually

I actually believe Mcdougal will become a solid #2 CB in the league.

I'm predicting when Cro gets cut after this year, Mcdougal and not Milliner takes his spot.

Pryor could be a Pro Bowler (or he might suck) but I can't wait to watch him in the box this year

How is it possible that McDougle missed almost 2 seasons?

I think they are referring to his last year in college being almost entirely gone due to injuries as well. Truth is the guy hasn't played much football over the last two years. I'm happy we're not counting on him to be a starter like last year.

Unreal mon, any TE that is worth their weight in gold is being covered by a safety/nickel back. If one thinks Amaro is just going to be covered by LB's should tell you ihe blows donkey dik. Amaro is not a great athlete and is very clumsy catching footballs. Jet WR corp is not scaring anyone and even if they were a solid group, if amaro was a great TE, teams would use a safety to cover him.

His Completion per target ratio is 71.6% which is actually one of the highest in the NFL (small sample size but still).
