Buscaglia: OTA Observations (6/10)

Joe Buscaglia

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) - Matt Cassel has been the player most have pegged to open up the regular season as the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback. That still may end up being the case, but only word can describe his performance to the only practice the media was able to see

Matt Cassel has brutal day — and other QB notes

- There was one repetition during red zone 7-on-7s that displayed a good throw from Matt Cassel into the back of the end zone. That play, by itself, was the only redeeming quality of Cassel’s performance against defensive players on Wednesday. Right from the start, Cassel put too much air under his throws, resulting in a number of passes that could have been intercepted by the defense. He was late on throws, he was inaccurate, and missed a deep throw to Tobais Palmer by about 15 yards (and that isn’t an exaggeration). Cassel’s lackluster day was concluded by a fade throw on the right sideline, in which the receiver was covered by three defenders. Predictably, the throw was intercepted — this time by Ronald Darby. Of the other quarterbacks, EJ Manuel had the best day of the bunch, while Matt Simms was getting worked in a bit more after having one week on the job. As for the most interesting man at One Bills Drive, Tyrod Taylor, Wednesday was merely a ‘meh’ day for him.

Rex fancies him some Incognito

- The Bills had a fair share of problems on the offensive line in 2014, most notably at guard. They went out and brought in two players — Richie Incognito and John Miller — to battle for a starting job. They have raved about Miller’s intelligence, but to this point much hasn’t been heard about how Incognito has performed. Take it for what it’s worth because Rex Ryan seems to talk up everyone this time of year, but he said Incognito has been outstanding to this point. This is important for one reason: it means that Incognito is assimilating well into the landscape over at One Bills Drive, and at least to this point, has put the days of Miami behind him for the time being. It’s big, because he is a likely starter for the Bills in 2015.

Glenn, Kouandjio had some struggles

- The starting offensive line on Wednesday featured Cordy Glenn and Cyrus Kouandjio as the left and right tackles, respectively. During team drills, both players had trouble with the player lined up in front of him. For Glenn, it was Jerry Hughes serving as the general thorn in his side. In this sort of practice setting without any pads on, Hughes is likely to beat some of the better offensive tackles in the league. Glenn just couldn’t handle the defensive end’s speed on Wednesday. For Kouandjio, it was a bit different. He was lined up against Corbin Bryant for a few reps, and Kouandjio struggled to hold his ground. It seems where Kouandjio had his problems was anchoring after initial contact with the defensive player. His lower body needs to be a lot stronger than what he showed on Wednesday if he hopes to win a starting position.

The gang all wasn’t there

- OTAs, of course, are voluntary to the players and no ramifications will be garnered if one misses a day. However, it felt like there were more players missing than usual. Percy Harvin, Chris Williams, Leodis McKelvin, Aaron Williams, Anthony Dixon, Seantrel Henderson, Deon Broomfield, and Tyson Chandler all were not on the field. Meanwhile, Sammy Watkins, Cam Thomas, Bryan Johnson, Tony Steward, and Justin Hamilton were all limited during the workout, but were seen during practice. That all changes next week, when for the first time, the Bills will hold mandatory practices in Orchard Park.

I didn't go to law school.

Best law school tort:  Mayhem, the intentional and wanton removal of a body part that would handicap a person's ability to defend himself in combat.

Full disclosure I got that from Wikipedia.  I couldn't be bothered to walk over to my bookshelf to look at Black's.  It included this lovely bit of caselaw:

The most significant change in common-law mayhem doctrine came in 1697, when the King's Bench decided Fetter v. Beale, 91 Eng. Rep. 1122. There, the plaintiff recovered in a battery action against a defendant. Shortly thereafter, "part of his skull by reason of the said battery came out of his head," and the plaintiff brought a subsequent action under mayhem. Though Fetter is also known as an early example of res judicata, it is most significant for expanding the ambit of mayhem to include "loss of the skull."

That movie and Step Brothers are loaded with good quotes. LOADED.

And you managed to pick the lamest one.

I don't say it because it isn't lame.  I say it because people are always bumping into me when I have my shot.  I don't understand getting espresso in to-go cups either.  It's a ******* shot.  You pound it at the bar and get back to work.

Also, why did the youtube show up as a link and not embedded?  Every time I figure it out it gets changed up.

Not at all worried about  the freaking Bills, its the Dolphins that will pose a greater threat. I can see them giving the Pats a run for the division.

Buffalo Bills Fan here -  we'll talk again in Mid-January
