Jets coaches reportedly told Pryor to tone it down in non-contact drills.

Jets coaches reportedly told Pryor to tone it down in non-contact drills.

By Glenn Naughton

When the New York Jets selected hard-hitting safety Calvin Pryor with their first-round selection of last year’s NFL draft (18th overall), they did so with the expectation of Pryor being able to knock out any receivers that came his way.

After a rookie season in which his trademark tackles at Louisville were nonexistent, he got an early start in 2015 when he laid out a teammate.  An unsuspecting Zach Sudfeld was hit by Pryor during non-contact team drills in minicamp last week and the team was going to run tests to determine the extent of the damage.

Head coach Todd Bowles feared Sudfeld’s injury may be serious and that was confirmed today when the Jets released Sudfeld after learning the TE had suffered a torn ACL.

The Jets signed TE Steve Maneri to take Sudfeld’s roster spot.

yes from going too hard at practice

Just to set the record straight, Calvin shoved him. I dont want anyone to get the impression that Calvin actually hit someone without hurting himself more than his target.

Calvin. Prick. Should have IR'd Sudfeld and fined Calvin. Team needs to get together and have Calvin pay Sudfeld for most of the lost wages ($585K 2015 salary).

Normal to waive an injured player, and when he clears waivers will be put on Jets injured reserve list.

Well he went hard enough at practice that the teams new head coach had to feel the need to tell him to tone it down in practice

Sudfeld was injured last Wednesday in a red-zone drill. He caught a pass in the end zone, on the boundary, and safety Calvin Pryor lowered a shoulder into Sudfeld. It wasn't a crushing hit; it was more of a shove than anything else. But it was enough to knock Sudfeld off balance, perhaps because he didn't expect it. He landed awkwardly and blew out his knee.

Coach Todd Bowles wasn't happy. There's not supposed to be any contact in spring practices, according to the collective bargaining agreement.

"It was one play, but there were a couple of guys that got a little carried away," he said after practice. "There were about three of four incidents that happened on the field that we can't have happen and we'll address that."

The Jets feared the worst, as Bowles hinted it could be a severe injury.

True. Im not sure what the player earns on IR though but either way, Jets would have to do an injury settlement. That doesn't change the fact the player lost an entire year due to a very unnecessary hit by a player that hasn't done anything while costing a very high pick.

Very unfortunate for Zack. He is not yet All Pro material.

another one of the not very smart individuals who are turning the NFL into a game that will be totally unrecognizable in another 10 years. The game will be played by alternate human clones controlled by computer graphics and Wii-like movements made by nerds in their homes

Agreed, it stinks for Sudfeld and Pryor was dumb for getting too physical in practice.

BUT Pryor is WAY more important to this team than Sudfeld was.  It's foolish to bash

him, we need him to grow up and show his talents in real games

Who is Zack Sudfeld & what was he known for?

The only thing I think of when I hear his name is a lame attempt to break up a duck thrown to him in the endzone in Greenbay.

He wasn't ready for that play either.
