In other news the sun will rise, the sky is blue and Rose bet on baseball as a player.

Can we now put the talk of him being in the Hall  to rest?

He violated the one cardinal sin in baseball.  He bet on the game as a player and as a manager.

He lied about it when caught.  He only admitted to betting as a manager 11 years ago.  Now, 26 years after his banishment, they finally have proof he bet on games as a player.

This is not the roid/PED issue which is only now punishable by suspension.

It is the first thing baseballplayers learn, no betting on baseball.

And yet I still don't care.  The HOF is for the greatest players of all time, Charlie Hustle is one of them.  Keep him from playing or managing another game? Go for it. His act doesn't take away the fact that he's one of the all-time greats. I understand the rules that the MLB has with regards to their induction of players, I just don't agree with it.  To me, this is completely separate from the PED era: while I think a HOF without Bonds, Arod, Manny or Clemens is ludicrous, I understand that argument. I will never be okay with keeping Rose out of the HOF.

Supposedly no he bet on other games Thing is he lied about it all. Conflicted on this

He should have come clean when this all happened. The steroids scandal would have made him look like an altar boy in comparison.

Lying about it only makes things worse in the public's eye. Some will forget and forgive if you are honest and admit your mistakes.

It's the other way around. Even if he never bet against his team. It's as much about throwing up the bat signal to other gamblers when he lays off a game as it is actively disincentivizing himself to win.

If you keep Pete out, gotta keep all the known steriod/PE drug users out as well

Why?

Pete was told, every MLB player is told, if you bet on the game you are out for life.

He did it anyway.  A lot.  Then lied about it for decades.

When the PED players were using, what was the policy on it?

Totally agree.  Or maybe, to cover his losses, he was told, "Red need to lose today".

Don't have to bet against them, just have to not win the game.

Not only was there no rule against it it was condoned.

I like Rose but gambling is a big no no with pro sports leagues.

The only thing that makes sports, sport, is the belief that the players are trying to win.  Once you introduce gambling, and player possibly throwing games on purpose, you have the WWE.

I realize not every player plays every play hard.  But not going all out is not remotely the same as throwing a game.

That's why the people who think Rose should be reinstated and go to HOF are just wrong.

Once players and coaches get involved with gambling it's over. Even if they bet on themselves to win there is such a criminal element and slippery slope involved pretty soon they go the other and bet on themselves to lose either to win $ or cover debts to the Sharks and bookies.
