can jets rookie QB Bryce Petty make a serious run at Geno Smith's job ? ? ?

@RichCimini Do you think @b_petty14 has the tools to be THE guy if Geno continues to disappoint? What have you seen from him ?

@RichCimini : I'll tell you what I've seen from Bryce Petty, Rob: Arm talent. His arm is good enough to make all the throws. But, as you know from watching Geno Smith, it takes more than a good arm to be an effective quarterback. We won't know about Petty's intangibles until we see him in game conditions, facing a live pass rush. Some fans might be hoping he pulls a Russell Wilson, a middle-round pick who blows away everyone from day one. The Jets would love to see that happen, but Wilson's advantage was that he already was well-versed in the Seattle Seahawks' offense, having played in a West Coast system in college. That's not the case with Petty, who played in an up-tempo spread at Baylor. There will be a steep learning curve. I also can tell you this: The coaches like Petty's moxie. He has that "it" factor, but, again, we have to see how it goes when things get serious on the field.

He was worth taking in the 4th just to have a shot at developing a young guy with physical tools into our future QB. Personally I'm optimistic but not for this season, this year I think it's sink or swim for Geno.....and I'm excited to see how it goes.

I think Petty will be the man in a year or two, he will be developed properly, and I think he has instincts like Favre or Rodgers from what I seen in his college tape. For once it seems we have a good staff running the team and possibly I think a future QB in Petty that will be polished up by Gailey and good veteran receivers and corners. He will learn by Geno's mistakes and will be ready when he is called upon in a year or two.

Just my gut feeling, our team is on track and in good hands finally!

Thank you..

No more rushing QBs into action before they are ready!!!

We're all agreed.

Don't let this kid see the field in 2015, I'd be fine with 2016 too.

Let's go old school and just let him percolate for years and feel really comfortable and prepared when he goes out there.   Let's just try it once.  We don't have to depend on him as the future but let's keep his possibility open.

Has there every been a qb taken in round 4 that gets more franchise talk then bryce petty? 4th round qbs are usually afterthoughts.

As in afterthoughts like every other Jets QB besides your screen name sake? So I don't see anything wrong with feeling a 4th rounder can do well, he certainly can't do worse then we are used to...

Rich Gannon was the Pats 4th rd pick in the 1987 draft.. Of course he didn't do anything good till he got to the Raiders in 1999..LOL

Petty definitely looks the part and seems to have that leadership factor.  Just let him sit and learn and unless both Geno and Fitz gets hurt, he carries a clipboard and wears his hat on backwards all year.  2016 can be his year to truly compete for the job.

The hard-on for Petty is inexplicable here. 32 teams passed on him several times. It for some reason, Jet Nation believes he can take the reigns next year. Some believe it'll be this year.

How about a few, not several. Don't make it seem like he was undrafted. How many teams are set at QB and would not draft one in first 6 rounds no matter what? I say 20, now two picked QB in first round. Leaves 10 teams that passed three times that had any thought of picking him. Not that many.

Everyone talks about him and hopes for him because our QB sucks.

The only competition Geno Smith has is with Ryan Fitzpatrick because they are both veteran seasoned quarterbacks that have played in the NFL before. In a season or two Bryce Petty will be ready to hopefully be the Jets starting quarterback if he is needed.

Petty needs to learn on the bench and on the sideline on how to play quarterback effectively before being brought into real game action. The Jets have made the mistake in the past of starting quarterbacks too soon and it hasn't helped that much.

For example Aaron Rodgers sat for a few seasons on the packers bench behind Favre and now Rodgers is starting and winning NFL MVPs and a Super Bowl a few seasons ago.

Petty is at best a project. He played in a one read offense in college.

I have a huge sense of optimism about Petty. He just FEELS like a quarterback. Not this year, though.

Yeah I really like the kid. Seems very genuine, and open, but does not give the sense he will say the wrong thing.

Just oozing with charisma, and confidence without coming off cocky. I have no idea how he'll play, but he could teach a class in how QBs should act.

He has all the physical tools, and the demeanor. He also has the track record, but basically in a different sport. Can't wait to see him in preseason, but even next year is wishful thinking.

This is exactly the type of QB we should have been drafting to develop. Learning the pro system, and reading defenses is more likely than learn to throw harder, or to be a leader.

I'm hoping he's at Geno level by the end of the year. That is still not ready for prime time though.

If Geno doesn't make a significant leap, then I'd be happy with Fitz for a couple years while he learns. I don't want him on the field before he's ready. I've seen that movie.

I'd still draft another similar type QB every year until we hit on one.

He really didn't even make that read, but got hand signals from the sideline.

The good thing from my perspective is that he was throwing the ball up to an area without time to set his feet so the one knock on him (accuracy) seems to be a non sequitur.

He throws a real nice ball when he sets his feet. We'll see how fast he can pick up the game. He did have a few plays each game where he dropped back and read the defense, and looked pretty good.

If he does work out he'll be the perfect franchise QB. Looks like Clark Kent, and has a great QB name. Could be the next Joe Namath if he's any good.

I haven't heard anyone that knows the rules of football that believes Petty will be ready to be a good QB this year.

The biggest reach I've heard was that there is a chance he could be a savant like Wilson. A chance. That's not belief.

Settle your jimmies.

If 20 teams are set at QB to the point they'll pass up a supposedly excellent backup QB multiple times, it means they weren't high on him. A team like Jets, that do t have reliable QBs, passed on him 3 times before grabbing him.

That isn't to say he can't be good, but Russell Wilsons don't come around every year in 4th rounds.

A lot of people here are suggesting he'll be a savior next year or the year after. To your credit, those people clearly don't know what they're talking about and simply believe it out of hope. We all hope he becomes the next Wilson, but like I said earlier, Wilsons don't come around often in 4th rounds.

If Petty truly showed some talent and ability to grasp the offense, Gailey is the perfect Coordinator who can run variations of the spread to make him feel comfortable as we ease him into the NFL game. Basically it comes down to speed, not only physically on the defensive side of the ball, but how fast he can read and react to situation's. That's what makes or breaks a QB.

Im a huge fan of Russel Wilson but Petty and Wilson are 2 very different QB's and a lot of people forget Russel Wilson  was given very little to do during a major portion of his first year other than not make mistakes he really didn't turn it on until the second half of the season and throught the playoffs.

Petty is in the perfect situation.  He has a OC with experience in the spread offense, who also is known for helping quarterbacks play to their strengths.   He has a solid veteran in Fitz he can talk to and also watch perform on the field.  Lastly he is on  a team with serious question marks at quarterback which means he will get a legit shot to compete for the starting position after having a full season to watch and learn from the sidelines.  Geno can only wish he had this situation when he was a rookie.

Can't really compare him to Wilson also for the reason that they are not the same type of players.
