munchmemory
Just read that one of the greatest electric bass players, Chris Squire, has passed away. He leaves an incredible legacy of music. Here's the Rolling Stone obit. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/chris-squire-yes-bassist-and-co-founder-dead-at-67-20150628

Snell41
This is going to be a very rough few years for Rock and Roll. The greats are really reaching that age where they are going to be dropping like flies, and there is a HUUUUGE void that will be left thanks to the 80's. I can probably go on forever, but guys like Allman, all of the Stones, the rest of the Dead, The Who, Zeppelin, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty.... Who really would be totally shocked if anyone from any of these bands up and dies tomorrow (besides Keef of course, because that man is invincible)? Snell41
Townshend and Page's passing will really hit me hard. I'm a diehard Allman fan. I went to 3 shows in their last Beacon run including their final night. I thought Gregg had a foot in the grave a couple years ago but he seemed to bounce back. He's one I just ain't ready for. Who would have thought that Gregg and Keith would see the end of the 70s, let alone the New Millennium? lol
Snell41
Who would have thought that Gregg and Keith would see the end of the 70s, let alone the New Millennium? lol It's all just proof you can take great care of yourself and you still may die young. You can load your body up with drugs and booze and stick your dick in everything that moves and live to a ripe old age. And at least you'll have more fun doing it. What I want to know is how are Brian Wilson and Peter Green still alive? Both those guys did so much acid they are talking to God on a one way radio now! Guess the odder you are.... You might wind up in the nut house. But you'll live.
JerryK
Bass Players are the "Offensive Line" of rock bands. Nobody knows who they are, but *they* are what make you great.

Without a kick ass rhythm section, the band is lost.
Snell41
Bass Players are the "Offensive Line" of rock bands. Nobody knows who they are, but *they* are what make you great. I played bass for a while. Thankfully back to guitar in my current world, but that time on bass taught me so much about music it wasn't even funny. Something else I learned quickly-a guitarist can screw up and so long as it isn't a total bomb it will likely go unnoticed by the masses. If the bassist so much as hits one note out of key then look out! It's like a record skips and the whole venue stares you down! But if you really want a solid lesson on modes, scales, and rhythm and tempo then go learn bass. Playing bass gave me so much more feel and awareness with a guitar, understanding the importance of landing on notes at the right spots vs just diddling scales, how to create the right mood/message with dissonance between notes instead of just relying on the standard chord or scale, etc etc etc.. JerryK
RIP. You are one of the smartest dudes here. Do I owe you an apology now? Thanks, I'm not sure what your apology question is about though...sorry if I missed something. I've noticed in just the last 10 years or so that 'good' bands also happen to have complicated bass lines in their music. Yes might have *invented* the complicated bass line.
