~ ~ OFFENSE

Quarterback (Geno Smith): He has 41 turnovers in 30 career games; Ryan Fitzpatrick is lurking.

Running back (Chris Ivory): He averaged only 4.15 yards per rush last season, third-lowest among players with at least 800 rushing yards.

Fullback (Tommy Bohanon): The former seventh-round pick missed most of last season with a broken collarbone.

Wide receiver (Brandon Marshall): He owns the league's fourth-highest reception total (446) in the past five years.

Wide receiver (Eric Decker): He racked up 221 receiving yards in the 2014 finale, seven yards shy of Don Maynard's team record.

Tight end (Jeff Cumberland): The former undrafted free agent played more offensive snaps last season (84 percent) than any non-lineman on the team.

Left tackle (D'Brickashaw Ferguson): He hasn't missed a single offensive play in nine years. That's not a misprint.

Left guard (James Carpenter): He left the Seahawks to sign a four-year, $19.1 million contract.

Center (Nick Mangold): No player on offense has played in as many Pro Bowls as Mangold -- six.

Right guard (Willie Colon): No guard in the NFL had more penalties last season than Colon -- 14, according to Pro Football Focus.

Right tackle (Breno Giacomini): He had more penalties (eight) than quarterback hits last season, per PFF.

DEFENSE

Defensive end (Leonard Williams): The Jets' first-round pick will be expected to be a Day 1 starter because of Sheldon Richardson's four-game drug suspension.

Nose tackle (Damon Harrison): "Big Snacks" is playing for a big contract; he will be an unrestricted free agent next year.

Defensive end (Muhammad Wilkerson): He has already started 60 games -- and he's still only 25 years old.

Outside linebacker (Calvin Pace): His goal is to play 14 years; he has 12 in the books.

Inside linebacker (David Harris): He reached an impressive milestone last year -- 1,000 career tackles.

Inside linebacker (Demario Davis): Only 4.5 sacks and one interception in the past two years; he needs more big plays for his contract drive.

Outside linebacker (Quinton Coples): He's coming off a career-high 6.5 sacks. Interestingly, not one came on third down.

Cornerback (Darrelle Revis): He will make $941,176 per week during the regular season. Welcome home.

Cornerback (Antonio Cromartie): He's the only projected starter with experience in Todd Bowles' defensive system. See: Arizona Cardinals, 2014.

Safety (Calvin Pryor): Last year's first-round pick still is looking for his first interception and first full sack.

Safety (Marcus Gilchrist): He left the Chargers to sign a four-year, $22 million deal.

SPECIALISTS

Place-kicker (Nick Folk): His field-goal percentage dropped nearly 10 points last year, down to 82.1 percent.

Punter (Ryan Quigley): He finished 13th in net punting average (40.2).

Long-snapper (Tanner Purdum): The most anonymous member of the team just keeps plugging along -- five years and counting.

People here talking about the Jets keeping six or seven (no way!) WRs, but when you look at that cut list, there's no one who really stands out as a keeper. If they go beyond five, it'll be because they picked up someone else's cut.

Cutting IK would be ridiculous. Actually, a few of these cuts would be.

Knew that cut would stand out here. Colon and Winters are no locks to make the final 53 with the competition on the current roster, let alone who shakes loose elsewhere. Also don't think they need to carry a FB at all.

Totally. I even thought the Jarvis Harrison cut (with Colon making it) was also a stretch. Harrison would have to play terribly for that to happen. Colon is on the down end of his career, even if Colon plays a bit better the fact that Harrison would be a back up and has youth on his side would imo give him the nod for the position.

The IK cut simply made me laugh though. If any player who could take advantage of Todd Bowles given his skillset It would be IK.

Actually do we have any Fullbacks? - I don't think Chan likes them in his scheme. its the vets on the bubble that may be more interesting:-

Colon

Winters

Babin

Bohanan

Pace

Miliner

Walls

Giacomini

Nice to speculate in the Dead zone, Roll on camp!

We almost definitely keep 6 and quite possibly 7. Super unlikely we keep a FB and probably only 3 RBs. This is not the Rex offense in any way, it is built on WR and hybrid TE that play a HB role. There is actually not a FB role in the offense at all, Owusu is already penciled in with a very dark pencil because of his KR ability and success at WR last year.  Swing ST players are not always linebackers. I think there is likely an OL or two not on the current roster.

Would be shocked if IK is cut, super unlikely. I think Taiwan Jones has real shot.

When Chan was the HC of the Bills 2010-2012 he didn't have a FB on his roster.. They also traded Lynch to the Seahawks..

6 DL seems low.

Rex doesn't/didn't have an offense.  He has a defense and a series of offensive coordinators that are not alike, unrelated and have no bearing on anything.

Right tackle (Breno Giacomini): He had more penalties (eight) than quarterback hits last season, per PFF

If only our RT could have more quarterback hits to even out his penalties!  (?)

I wouldn't be surprised if Ik gets cut.  He is the type of guy that may shine under a new regime or disappear.

Harrison is the type of guy that could start or get cut for doing something boneheaded/not being a team player.

I think there are too many DBs.  I doubt they carry Walls and Williams both and can see them letting loose either Jarrett or Allen.

Carrying three QBs is going to suck, but they will have to do it.

~ ~   Running back Stevan Ridley was among three veterans placed on the physically unable to perform list by the New York Jets on Wednesday. In addition, guard Willie Colon and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson were also placed on the PUP list.Ridley and Colon are recovering from knee injuries while Vickerson has a hamstring issue.

On a positive note, 2013 first-round pick Dee Milliner was not placed on PUP. Milliner was limited this offseason as he continued to recover from a torn Achilles suffered last October.Players on PUP can be activated at any point during the preseason, but players must be placed on the list before the start of camp to be eligible to remain on the list during the regular season.

Guard Evan Mathis was set to make $5.5 million for the Eagles this season, but stayed away from Philly during offseason workouts before being released amid conflicting accounts about whether or not that’s what he wanted.Mathis hasn’t landed another job for the 2015 season yet and Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan indicated that a big part of the reason is Mathis’s desire to get as close to that $5.5 million as possible.

“We’ve had talks with Evan’s agent,” Maccagnan said, via the New York Daily News. “They’re kind of getting a feel for where – they have a range for where they want to be. The other thing with a lot of teams honestly at this point in time, you almost want to kind of see what you have first to a certain degree. Obviously Evan’s a good player, but as this thing plays out a bit we’ll get a better feel for that. The thing is too is that Evan might have a value he’s looking for right now that may not be in the value that some of the teams want to potentially spend on him. But we’ll see how that develops.”

The Jets have several players under consideration for the right guard job this season. Mathis would almost certainly be an upgrade on Willie Colon, Brian Winters, Oday Aboushi or Brent Qvale, but, for now at least, that potential upgrade appears to come at too high a cost for the team’s pocketbook.

along the lines...

Jets guard Willie Colon is entering his 10th year in the NFL. He has won a Super Bowl, dealt with injuries, watched the team that drafted him cut him loose and spent two eventful seasons in New York.

There’s not much the Bronx native has not seen in the NFL.

Now, the 32-year-old is fighting for a job again. Colon is one of four players competing for the starting right guard spot, the position Colon has occupied for the past two seasons.“As far as me fighting for a job, I’ve always had that mentality,” Colon said. “I wish I could say it’s changed or I ever got comfortable, but I’ve been in so many competition battles it’s my innate nature that I’ve got to always go out there and prove something. It’s a long camp and every day is going to be evaluated. I’ve just got to stay on my game and never relax. The cards are going to fall where they may.”The last time Colon was fighting for a job was in Pittsburgh, where he battled Max Starks for the right tackle spot in 2007. Colon re-signed with the Jets in March, knowing he would have to compete for the starting job. He sees it as a positive sign of greater depth on the offensive line. Third-year players Brian Winters and Oday Aboushi are competing with Colon along with Brent Qvale, a second-year player.“I’ve seen each and every guy in the room step their game up,” Colon said. “Winters is playing at a high level. Oday is playing at a high level. Brent is I think the most impressive to me, from his first year to his second year he’s starting to look like a legit pro. The addition of [left guard James Carpenter], he’s everything everyone talked about. He’s legit. He’s physical. He gets after it. He’s good to have.”

Jets coach Todd Bowles did not sound overly impressed when someone pointed out quarterbacks Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick have not thrown an interception during team drills yet.“[The defense is] not really pressing them,” Bowles said. “We’re working on a lot of things as it goes forward. You still want to get your hands on the ball, they come in bunches. We don’t worry about that. Two days of pads, you just worry about getting the calls right and the technique down. I think that was the tone.”

-- Brent Qvale, who grew up in a small city in North Dakota, is adapting quite nicely to life in the New York area. He and his wife have ventured into Manhattan, visiting Central Park and the Museum of Natural History -- ''the super touristy stuff," he said."Also found some good pizza," he said, acknowledging the pizza in Williston, N.D. (pop: 20,000) can't touch a New York slice.

Qvale learns quickly.

The New York Jets are hoping it's the same for him at right guard.Qvale (pronounced: KWAL-ee) is the no-name guy in the right-guard competition, which includes incumbent Willie Colon and former starting left guard Brian Winters. Another former starter at left guard, Oday Aboushi, could get a look before long, perhaps even backup tackle Ben Ijalana. At Nebraska, Qvale began as a right guard, but he wound up at right tackle. At 6-foot-7, 315 pounds, he's built like a tackle. The Jets signed him last year as an undrafted free agent, keeping him at right tackle. He suffered a concussion in training camp, fell behind, got cut and landed on the practice squad.Early in the spring, the new coaching staff decided to move him inside. When media types saw him taking starter's reps at right guard in offseason practices, the general reaction was, "Who?"

"It was the same thing going to Nebraska," Qvale said. "Coming from North Dakota, people were like, 'Why is this guy from North Dakota here?' All you can do is work hard and execute and give yourself a chance. I guess [offensive line] coach [steve] Marshall and coach [Chan] Gailey saw some things and said, 'We're going to give you a shot.'"There's a transition, of course. At guard, you have to take on 330-pound nose tackles and freakishly quick defensive tackles. Guard is an important position in the AFC East, considering the opposition. Some of the NFL's best defensive tackles are in the division -- Ndamukong Suh (Miami Dolphins), Kyle Williams (Buffalo Bills) and Marcell Dareus (Bills). If Qvale thinks moving to New York was culture shock, it'll be a double-shock if he has to block Suh.

"All I can ask for is a chance," he said.In case you're wondering, only 48 North Dakota natives have played in the NFL, according to records. Only seven have played more than 100 games, most recently Jim Kleinsasser (Minnesota Vikings). As a kid, Qvale idolized Kleinsasser."I'm trying to follow in his footsteps, I guess," he said.

I see Daryl Richardson making the team; the team could really use his speed and explosiveness.  I don't think Bohanon or Copeland makes it. Right now they are working UDFA  OLB Julian Howsare at Fullback.   I think Wes Saxton has a chance to make the team (or at least the PS).   Absolutely no way Harrison is cut; this guy has legit second round talent and the only knock against him was perceived motivation.  Well, so far that has not been an issue and he will be in the mix for Right Guard and may even get some reps at Tackle in preparation for a position change a year from now.

Jason Babin is not making this team over IK. Don't know what the fascination is with over the hill vet players over young emerging players with upside.   Dee Miliner is on the field and playing so no PUP for him.  Once again Rick Cimini is clueless.

Jarrod West's time in Jets camp was quick. Signed on Sunday, the team waived the rookie from Syracuse this evening and signed wide receiver Arthur Williams.

Like West, Williams was invited to rookie minicamp back in May. He played his college ball at the University of Maine. The Jets have had a few Maine alums on their roster in recent years. Some were success stories (Mike Devito). Others were less successful (Matthew Mulligan).

The other day when West was signed I wondered whether this signaled a philosophical shift within the organization. After quickly releasing J.C. Copeland, were the Jets going to start constantly turning over the bottom of their roster? The general idea is to get a look at as many different developmental prospects as possible to see which ones are worth having. This is more circumstantial evidence Maccagnan might be taking this approach.

Arthur Williams
Height: 5-11.5
Weight: 183
40: 4.38
Year: 5Sr
School: Maine
Position: WR

Bio: Part-time starter the past two years playing in just six games last season. Posted a career-best 24 receptions as a junior.

Positive: Athletic, vertical receiver who displays flashes of big-time ability. Shows a burst, beats defenders down the field and extends to snatch passes away from his frame. Keeps the play in bounds running after the catch and shows a lot of quickness.

Negative: Lacks a quick release off the line of scrimmage. Must improve his route running. Marginal production on the small-school level.
Analysis: Williams has the size and speed to succeed at the next level as a fourth or fifth receiver but is rough around the edges. He's worth bringing into camp this summer with the hopes of developing on a practice squad.

The Jets are one week into training camp, if you count last Wednesday's report day as the start of camp. They've held five practices, including just three in full pads, so there is a long way to go before their final, 53-man roster is determined. But at the one-week mark, such as it is, we'll take a stab at predicting it anyway.

The Jets currently have 90 players on their roster. They must cut down to 75 by Sept. 1, and to 53 by Sept. 5 — eight days before the season opener. So who is going to make the team? (Remember, some of the cut guys could be retained on the 10-member practice squad.)

Here's a look at last year's final 53.And here is our initial educated guess at the final 53 for 2015 :

QUARTERBACKS (3)

Retained: Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty

Cut: Jake Heaps

Analysis: This is an easy position to predict. The Jets aren't going to put Petty on the practice squad, because another team could scoop him up.

RUNNING BACKS (3)

Retained: Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley, Bilal Powell

Cut: Zac Stacy, Daryl Richardson, Tommy Bohanon (fullback)

Analysis: A lot of this depends on whether Ridley, recovering from ACL and MCL tears, starts the season on the physically unable to perform list. He hasn't practiced yet in training camp. You'll notice we don't have the Jets keeping a fullback on their final 53. Bohanon is their only current fullback.

WIDE RECEIVERS (7)

Retained: Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall, Jeremy Kerley, Devin Smith, Chris Owusu, T.J. Graham, Quincy Enunwa

Cut: Saalim Hakim, Austin Hill, DeVier Posey, Walter Powell, Jonathon Rumph, Arthur Williams, Shaq Evans

Analysis: Fringe receivers need to play well on special teams. Owusu and Graham do that. Owusu has also impressed as a receiver so far. Hakim is fast and does a good job on special teams, but he doesn't have great hands. Posey has been injured to start camp, so we'll leave him out for now. It's a tough call between Enunwa and Evans for our final spot. Both have played solidly so far in camp.

TIGHT ENDS (3)

Retained: Jace Amaro, Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis

Cut: Wes Saxton, Steve Maneri

Analysis: No surprises here. Maybe the Jets decide to stick with just two tight ends, since Davis is primarily a blocking tight end. But we'll keep him onboard for now.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (9)

Retained: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, James Carpenter, Nick Mangold, Willie Colon, Breno Giacomini, Oday Aboushi, Brian Winters, Dakota Dozier, Ben Ijalana

Cut: Brent Qvale, Jarvis Harrison, Dalton Freeman, James Brewer, Wesley Johnson, Charles Brown

Analysis: Yes, Ijalana is pretty much exclusively a backup tackle, but that's an important person to have. Aboushi can also play tackle, which helps him, even if he doesn't win the right guard competition against Colon, Winters, and Qvale. We're projecting Qvale, a converted tackle, as the odd man out. The Jets have been grooming Dozier, a guard, to also play center. So Freeman is cut.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (6)

Retained: Damon Harrison, Muhammad Wilkerson, Leger Douzable, Leonard Williams, T.J. Barnes, Kevin Vickerson

Suspended: Sheldon Richardson

Cut: Stephen Bowen, Ronald Talley, Jordan Williams, Davon Walls, Deon Simon

Analysis: Vickerson has been hurt, so that's a tough call. But the Jets need an extra guy, since Richardson is out for the first four games. They'll have to make a roster move whenever he returns.

LINEBACKERS (9)

Retained: David Harris, Demario Davis, Calvin Pace, Quinton Coples, Lorenzo Mauldin, Erin Henderson, Jamari Lattimore, IK Enemkpali, Trevor Reilly

Cut: Jason Babin, Deion Barnes, Julian Howsare, Taiwan Jones, Joe Mays

Analysis: Babin will be the most prominent veteran cut, as we're projecting the Jets to go with the younger Enemkpali as Coples' backup. No other real stunners among the linebacker cuts.

SAFETIES (4)

Retained: Calvin Pryor, Marcus Gilchrist, Antonio Allen, Jaiquawn Jarrett

Cut: Rontez Miles, Durell Eskridge

Analysis: Pretty straightforward here. Two starters and two backups. This is the two-deep the Jets have been going with throughout camp, as Allen and Jarrett are backing up Pryor and Gilchrist.

CORNERBACKS (6)

Retained: Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Dee Milliner, Dexter McDougle, Darrin Walls

Cut: Curtis Brown, Keith Lewis, Dashaun Phillips, Marcus Williams

Analysis: Williams did some good things as an undrafted rookie last year, but there's no room for him in this talent-rich cornerback group.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Retained: Nick Folk, Ryan Quigley, Tanner Purdum

Cut: Jacob Schum

Analysis: It would be a shocker if this spot unfolded any other way.

The Jets may have lost safety Antonio Allen for a long time after he suffered an apparent Achilles tendon injury on Thursday.

Allen dropped to the ground during a team drill and clutched his ankle. Trainers helped him off the field and coach Todd Bowles said he was unsure of the severity of the injury but it was to an Achilles tendon. If he tore the tendon, Allen likely would require surgery and miss the season.Allen, a seventh-round draft pick in 2012, started eight games last season for the Jets. He moved to cornerback for a time as the Jets tried to find someone to man the position.Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall spoke about his former team and quarterback Thursday during a TV appearance. Marshall said he was the only player on the Bears to hold Jay Cutler accountable.“But for me last year, I felt like, when we are going on 10 years, nine, 10 years in the league — it’s time to get it,” Marshall said on ESPN’s “First Take.” “I felt like I was the only one in the organization that had the ‘huevos’ to hold [Cutler] accountable. It didn’t go the way I wanted it to go.”

Marshall said he and Cutler rarely spoke last year and have not talked since last season.Later, Marshall said he is done speaking about the Bears.“I’m going to move on,” he said. “That’s it. My answer from here on out is about the New York Jets.”Bowles is adjusting to plenty of things about being a head coach. One that is going to start next week when the Jets open the preseason is handling his in-game duties such as managing the clock and calling timeouts.“I don’t think you can prepare for them because different situations happen differently,” Bowles said. “You just have to understand that you’re in the game and understand what’s about to happen before it happens so you don’t have any problem calling timeouts or things of that nature. I think you have to go through it personally.”The Jets play their first preseason game on Thursday against the Lions in Detroit.

Training day

Good

Second-year wide receiver Quincy Enunwa had a nice day. The 2014 sixth-round pick made a really nice catch on a deep pass when he was matched up against cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who also drew a penalty on the play.

Bad

Rookie quarterback Bryce Petty continues to struggle, throwing a pick-six to cornerback Darrin Walls, who was sitting on the route and Petty never should have been thrown at.

Caught me eye

Brandon Marshall is going to be a beast in the red zone. During the team’s red-zone drill, quarterback Geno Smith found Marshall on a slant for a touchdown. Marshall used his big body to box out cornerback Darrelle Revis on the play.

Medical report

It did not look good for safety Antonio Allen, who left practice with an apparent Achilles injury. If it is a tear, he would likely miss the season. … DE Muhammad Wilkerson sat out of practice for a third straight day with a hamstring injury.

-- With the preseason opener on Thursday night, the New York Jets have released their first official depth chart. Based on what I've seen in practice, this is an accurate representation on how things stand at every position. There are no stunners on the depth chart. Yes, Geno Smith is listed as the No. 1 quarterback. No, the Jets didn't pull a page out of the Buffalo Bills' press release, listing it as Smith/Ryan Fitzpatrick. There are no slashes on Todd Bowles' depth chart, just your basic list of starters and backups and backups to the backups.

A few notes :

Jace Amaro is listed as the third tight end, behind Jeff Cumberland and Kellen Davis. Don't read too much into this. Remember, Bowles said Amaro would be used as an H-Back, and there's no H-Back on the depth chart.

• Troubled defensive end Sheldon Richardson is listed as a starter even though he has been practicing with the backups. No. 1 pick Leonard Williams appears as a backup, but he's expected to start the first preseason game.

Chris Owusu (concussion) is listed as a second-team wide receiver, as is Jeremy Kerley. Obviously, the starters are Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall. This illustrates how much Owusu has climbed in the eyes of the coaches.

• Incumbent left guard Oday Aboushi is listed behind James Carpenter and Dakota Dozier. This confirms what we suspected at the Green & White practice: Aboushi, who worked with the third-team line, is on the roster bubble.

One LT was at the Jets' Monday training camp practice — LaDainian Tomlinson actually returned to the Atlantic Health Training Center, the place he called his home for the final two years of his sensational playing career, to record some interviews for NFL Network. But Trevor Reilly, the Green & White's second-year linebacker, had the other LT in mind. Yes, Lawrence Taylor.

The conversation began with a question about Reilly's relentlessness, praised a couple of days ago by head coach Todd Bowles."Here's the deal," Reilly told me after Monday's practice. "As an edge player, you can make a lot of plays on the back side. If you want to be a great one, ability has a lot to do with it, obviously. But in my opinion, if you want to stick, you've got to be the guy that's willing to do the dirty stuff, take on the blocks, try to run things down on the back side. So that's the attitude I take.

"The greatest of all time was LT, probably," he added. "He had the ability and the motor. I don't think I have that kind of ability, but I can choose to have that kind of motor."That's exactly the kind of player Bowles has been noticing."Trevor comes off the ball. He plays hard," the coach said. "He has only one speed, and the way he comes off the edge is the way I'd like to see all the backups come off the edge."A problem for the 27-year-old second-year man from Utah is whether he has enough ability and motor to prevail in the numbers game at outside 'backer. Third-round rookie LB Lorenzo Mauldin also has shown a superb burst off the QB during blocking drills. And the unofficial depth chart just released by the Jets ahead of Thursday night's preseason opener at Detroit shows 12th-year veteran Jason Babin also vying for an OLB spot.

"Yeah, that's up to the coaches and the front office," Reilly said. "All I can do is play the best that I can and put film out. Hopefully, it's meant to be."The tiebreaker for Reilly may well be his special-teams dimension. "That's my baby, man," he said. And that's a good thing, since the Jets teams have to replace some top performers from a year ago — Nick Bellore left for the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent, and leading tackler Zach Sudfeldand Antonio Allenboth suffered season-ending injuries."I think if I'm here when the season starts, that needs to be my role. I'd probably be on all four [units] if I'm here," he said. "The key about special teams is desire. Most guys don't play 'em in college. So it comes down to attitude. If you have the attitude to be great and you do your best  and do your assignment, then you can be a special teams player."

So to review, Trevor Reilly's got the motor, he's got the attitude, and he's got the beard ... oh, yeah, the beard, which is probably a story for another day. For now, Reilly's focusing on ripping off the edge on defense and providing production and leadership on special teams, and he'll take this year's numbers battle to the next level against the Lions in two days.
