It got lost in the shuffle yesterday, but at the same time the Jets announced they were cutting IK Enempkali, they announced they had signed cornerback Javier Arenas. The Jets certainly had their homework done about players on the waiver wire to get somebody else signed so quickly.

Arenas was a second round pick in 2010 out of Alabama. A college teammate of former Jets quarterback, Greg McElroy, Arenas has spent time with the Chiefs, Cardinals, and Falcons. Although listed as a cornerback, his return skills helped get him drafted as much as anything. He owns the 15th best punt return average in NCAA history. He owns a solid 9.8 career average in the NFL as a punt returner.

Before everything happened yesterday, special teams coach Bobby April said Jeremy Kerley would be the primary punt returner with Eric Decker situationally helping. Arenas might have a chance to make himself part of the mix.

Already the best punt returner on the team.  Another disappointing corner from Alabama.  Played for Bowles in 2013, but they didn't have him back.

10 underdogs with a chance to make Jets' 53-man roster

With one preseason game and 2½ weeks of training camp in the books, the Jets are roughly halfway through training camp, which means it won't be long until they start paring down the roster. In recent days, we've offered up our best guesses for how the 53-man roster will shake out once the regular season is ready to ramp up (see here, here, and here). But now we've got some explainin' to do.

In the gallery above, we offer up 10 players on the roster fringe who have shown a little something since the start of camp. But before you get to clicking, keep two things in mind :

1. Much can still change between Tuesday and Sept. 1, when rosters must get trimmed from 90 to 75, and between Tuesday and Sept. 5, when the 53-man limit will be set.

2. The evaluations outlined above do not necessarily conform to whatever standards the Jets' coaches have set for determining roster spots. Training camp is for working on specific things for specific situations. What may look obvious to an outsider may not at all have any indication as to what the Jets are looking at.

And with that, enjoy the (slide)show.

In this politically correct era we're living in, I'm surprised it's not called a "53 person roster".

-- With one preseason game in the books and three to go, it's a good time to take another stab at the New York Jets' 53-man roster. Our projection  :

Quarterback (3): Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty. (Cut: Jake Heaps)

Analysis: Smith's injury muddies the situation. Assuming he's not ready for Week 1, they will have to make Petty the No. 2 to start the season or add a veteran, which would mean four quarterbacks on the roster unless Smith lands on short-term injured reserve. That's not good roster management.

Running back (4): Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Tommy Bohanon. (PUP: Stevan Ridley; Cut: Daryl Richardson, Julian Howsare)

Analysis: Ridley's chances of being ready for Week 1 are growing slimmer by the day. Bohanon was an early question mark, but he's having a solid camp. It makes sense to carry a fullback when you're going to run as much as the Jets are planning.

Wide receiver (6): Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Devin Smith, Quincy Enunwa, Jeremy Kerley, T.J. Graham. (Cut: Shaquelle Evans, Walter Powell, Chris Owusu, DeVier Posey, Saalim Hakim, Austin Hill, Jonathon Rumph, Arthur Williams)

Analysis: This is the most competitive position on the team. It's tough to project after the top three. I'm keeping Kerley for now, but I think the Jets will try to trade him. Inexplicably, he has fallen on the depth chart. They'd have to find someone to replace him as the punt returner.

Tight end (3): Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis, Jace Amaro. (Cut: Steve Maneri, Wes Saxton)

Analysis: Amaro's shoulder injury complicates things. He should be ready for the regular season, but you never know.

Offensive line (9): D'Brickashaw Ferguson, James Carpenter, Nick Mangold, Willie Colon, Breno Giacomini, Ben Ijalana, Brian Winters, Jarvis Harrison, Dalton Freeman. (Cut: Oday Aboushi, Dakota Dozier, Brent Qvale, James Brewer, Wesley Johnson, Charles Brown)

Analysis: Dozier and Johnson are getting reps at center. If one of them gets comfortable by the end of camp, it will make Freeman expendable. Aboushi, a former starter, has been working with the third-team line, which is ominous.

Defensive line (6): Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, Leonard Williams, Ronald Talley, Leger Douzable, T.J. Barnes (Suspended: Sheldon Richardson; Cut: Stephen Bowen, Kevin Vickerson, Deon Simon, Jordan Williams, Davon Walls).

Analysis: They'd better hope Wilkerson (hamstring) is healthy or else the formidable line will be down two starters, Richardson being the other. Some tough choices here for the Jets.

Linebacker (9): David Harris, Demario Davis, Quinton Coples, Calvin Pace, Lorenzo Mauldin, Jamari Lattimore, Jason Babin, Erin Henderson, Trevor Reilly. (Cut: Joe Mays, Taiwan Jones, Deion Barnes)

Analysis: Henderson's knee injury, though not serious, could open the door for Mays. Babin also isn't a lock, especially with Reilly coming on.

Secondary (10): Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Marcus Gilchrist, Calvin Pryor, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Darrin Walls, Marcus Williams, Dex McDougle, Dee Milliner. (Cut: Curtis Brown, Dashaun Phillips, Keith Lewis, Keon Lyn, Rontez Miles, Durell Eskridge, Javier Arenas)

Analysis: The 53 includes seven corners and three safeties. They need another safety, perhaps Miles, to make a push.

Specialists (3): Nick Folk, Ryan Quigley, Tanner Purdum. (Cut: Jacob Schum)

Analysis: Easy as pie.

Oday, winters, and Dozier all predicted to be cut. The sad, sad drafting continues.

And is that you in the picture with the dude from deadwood?

I really hope Dozier makes it, but Idzik drafted  more G's than any other position and they'll likely end up starting a FA and Colon.  Terrible.

Cimini predicting Kerley will be traded, wonder why they jets are viewed as being so low on him?

I've read two trains of thought on this.  One is that Bowles is going "Parcells" on him tweaking him to do better but ultimately he starts in the slot.  The other which might be more valid is the size difference between Kerley and Enunwa with Quincy 6'2 and 225 vs. Kerley 5'9" and 190.  That size argument wears thin however when you see successful slot guys like Welker and Edelman, etc.  Chrebet, too...

Yeah I'm hoping it's the former. Kerley is a chain mover in the slot, sure enunwa has the height and weight advantage but he hasn't shown he can catch the football yet.

Jets claim tight end Arthur Lynch off waivers from Miami

The New York Jets claimed tight end Arthur Lynch off waivers from the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday.

Lynch was selected in the fifth round the 2014 NFL Draft by the Dolphins. He missed all of his rookie season after a back injury landed him on injured reserve.

Lynch provides extra depth at tight end for the Jets. Jace Amaro (shoulder) and Steve Maneri (hamstring) are dealing with injuries and the Jets have been left short-handed.

The Jets waived punter Jacob Schum to make room for Lynch on their roster.

Some players worth watching on Friday night, when the New York Jets host the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium :

1. Jeremy Kerley/Quincy Enunwa : This has developed into the most intriguing positional battle in training camp. Enunwa appears to be ahead of Kerley as the No. 3 wide receiver -- who saw that coming? -- but Todd Bowles has said that the competition is ongoing. Kerley played 23 snaps in last week's game, more than any receiver -- all with the backups. He could get some time with the starters in four-receiver sets.

2. Leonard Williams : The Jets' No. 1 pick was disappointed he didn't play more last week (only 13 snaps). It was a bit of a surprise, but it was a case of Bowles wanting to protect him from injury. With Sheldon Richardson's suspension looming, the Jets are counting on their rookie defensive end -- a lot. His snap count should double, considering the starters are expected to play about a half. Prediction: Williams makes his first "wow" play.

3. James Carpenter : This is strictly injury-related. He "tweaked" an ankle on Wednesday (Bowles' word) and didn't finish practice. If they decide to play it safe and sit Carpenter, the starting left guard will be ... Dakota Dozier? Oh, boy. They also have Oday Aboushi, who has more experience than Dozier, but Aboushi is facing a one-game suspension, so it doesn't make much sense from a football standpoint to give him the reps with the starters. On the flip side, there's the health standpoint -- as in, keeping Ryan Fitzpatrick healthy.

I wonder if Kerley did or said something that ticked the coaches off? He is clearly the 3rd best (healthy) WR we have so something is going on there. Unless they are looking for a cheaper option. But then again 4/yr 16mil isn't gonna break the bank. .......... Just curious

The Jets on Monday signed former Giants tight end Matt LaCosse.

To make room on the 90-man roster, the Jets waived defensive end Davon Walls, with an injury designation. Walls has a short-term knee injury. The Jets gave LaCosse a one-year contract, according to a league source.LaCosse, who is 6-foot-6 and 258 pounds, went undrafted out of Illinois this year. The Giants signed him right after the draft.

They waived him Aug. 1, with an injury designation. LaCosse passed through waivers, but instead of landing on the Giants' injured reserve, they reached an injury settlement with him. That made him a free agent.LaCosse had been dealing with a hamstring injury, but is fully healed now. LaCosse hurt his hamstring in the Giants' first training camp practice. The Jets are a good landing spot for LaCosse. Their blocking tight end, Kellen Davis, has struggled lately. Their top pass-catching tight end, Jace Amaro, is dealing with a shoulder sprain, and it's unclear if he'll be ready for Week 1.

So there's not a lot of certainty right now in the Jets' tight end room, beyond Jeff Cumberland, a steady but unspectacular player who isn't a major receiving threat. The Jets now have seven tight ends. The other three are roster long shots Steve Maneri, Wes Saxton, and Arthur Lynch.(LaCosse's NFL.com scouting report before the draft actually compared to him to Lynch, a fifth-round pick in 2014.)

During LaCosse's senior year at Illinois, he had 14 catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior, he had 20 catches for 237 yards and three touchdowns.Like LaCosse, Walls is an undrafted rookie. The Jets signed him immediately after the draft.

Here's a look at LaCosse's strengths, based on his NFL.com scouting report:

Smooth release from the line and gets into routes quickly. Good play speed inside his routes with ability to get on top of safeties quickly when he's asked to threaten on third level. Sinks hips into breaks and accelerates into cuts. Can go low and make the tough catch with soft mitts. Used in-line and from wing spot, but was lined up outside in his last regular season game. Willing to fight and sustain when asked to square up as in-line blocker. Block technique needs work, but he has ability to get better.

And here's how NFL.com broke down his weaknesses:

Tall, angular frame with more meat needed through his lower body. Unable to generate push as a drive blocker and gets rocked from his spot by bull rushers when asked to single-up on them. Tested out at 20 reps, but needs more core strength. Sluggish to release into routes against jams and can be knocked well off course. Played in less than 50 percent of the snaps over last two seasons and had just 38 catches for his career. Needs more fluidity in routes and also needs to stop giving them away with early lean.

The bottom line, according to NFL.com's scouting report, is that LaCosse's frame and speed give him "the tools to work with for teams looking for a tight end who can stretch the field or stress linebackers in one-on-one matchups." Plus, his special teams ability will increase his value, the scouting report noted.

"It's crunch time."

That was head coach Todd Bowles on Monday, summing up where the Jets are with their player evaluations as training camp winds down this week, with roster cuts taking place next week.Wednesday and Thursday are the Jets' final two training camp practices. All that's let after that is Saturday's Snoopy Bowl against the Giants, and practices Monday and Tuesday, at which point, the roster must be trimmed to 75. And after that, there's the Sept. 3 preseason finale against the Eagles, after which the 53-man roster must be decided by Sept. 5.

Once more: No one but the Jets coaches knows what criteria will be used to determine who makes the 53-man roster. What Darryl Slater and I have done before (here, here, here, and here) is project what we think they might do.

Below is my latest stab at it.

QUARTERBACKS (4)

Retained: Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Flynn, Bryce Petty
Cut: Jake Heaps
Analysis: I explained why the Jets will be forced to keep four quarterbacks here.

RUNNING BACKS (4)

Retained: Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Tommy Bohanon
Cut: Daryl Richardson, Julian Howsare
PUP: Stevan Ridley
Analysis: Bohanon's been getting a ton of reps with the first team, and Bowles last week said he was "a pleasant surprise." As of right now, it's difficult to see Bohanon not making the roster.

Retained: Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, Devin Smith, Chris Owusu, Quincy Enunwa, DeVier Posey

Cut: Shaq Evans, T.J. Graham, Saalim Hakim, Austin Hill, Walter Powell, Jonathon Rumph

Analysis: I had Graham on this list the last time, but I've replaced him with Posey because Posey has been getting more reps with the first team. The bigger question is whether the Jets choose to keep seven wideouts.

TIGHT ENDS (3)

Retained: Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis, Jace Amaro
Cut: Wes Saxton, Arthur Lynch, Matt LaCosse
Analysis: Davis had a brutal, three-penalty game last week against the Falcons, but he's experienced and a skilled blocker and better than what's left. Amaro is the big mystery here. How long will his shoulder keep him sidelined? And if it's going to take a while, might he be a candidate for short-term IR? Problem is, the Jets can only give that designation to one player, and I have it going to someone else below.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (9)

Retained: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, James Carpenter, Nick Mangold, Willie Colon, Breno Giacomini, Wesley Johnson, Jarvis Harrison, Ben Ijalana, Brian Winters
Cut: Oday Aboushi, Dakota Dozier, Dalton Freeman, James Brewer, Charles Brown, Brian Winters
Analysis: Last time, I had Qvale making it and Johnson and Winters getting cut. But the Jets need a backup center, and while Qvale hasn't had many reps at center,   Johnson's been getting those snaps ahead of Freeman. Also, Winters can work as a backup.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (5)

Retained: Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, Leonard Williams, Leger Douzable, T.J. Barnes
Suspended: Sheldon Richardson
Cut: Stephen Bowen, Jordan Williams, Deon Simon, Kevin Vickerson, Ronald Talley
Analysis: Not sure the Jets need more than five at this spot. Simon would still be perfect for the practice squad.

LINEBACKERS (8)

Retained: David Harris, Demario Davis, Calvin Pace, Quinton Coples, Lorenzo Mauldin, Jamari Lattimore, Jason Babin, Trevor Reilly
Cut: Deion Barnes, Bryan Johnson, Taiwan Jones, Joe Mays, Erin Henderson
Analysis: Pace's recent groin injury helps Babin's chances, and Lattimore played his way back onto the roster with last week's game against the Falcons. Still like Henderson's chances if he can get healthy soon.

SAFETIES (4)

Retained: Calvin Pryor, Marcus Gilchrist, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Rontez Miles
Cut: Durell Eskridge
Analysis: They're going to need four safeties, and it's hard to see Eskridge making it ahead of Miles right now.

CORNERBACKS (6)

Retained: Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Dexter McDougle, Marcus Williams, Dashaun Phillips
Cut: Curtis Brown, Keith Lewis, Keon Lyn, Javier Arenas, Darrin Walls
Short-term IR: Dee Milliner
Analysis: Putting Milliner (wrist) on short-term IR would give the Jets some flexibility here by allowing them to keep another corner. Cutting Walls would still be a tough call. Phillips can make it because of his special-teams ability.

SPECIALISTS (3)

Retained: Nick Folk (kicker), Ryan Quigley (punter), Tanner Purdum (long snapper)
Cut: None
Analysis: Duh.

- The mandatory cutdown to 75 players is coming up quickly -- Tuesday, to be exact. Some tough decisions for the New York Jets. Our fearless forecast  :

Quarterback (4) -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, Matt Flynn, Geno Smith. (Cut: Jake Heaps)

Analysis: Well, this is awkward -- four quarterbacks! It's unavoidable because they need an emergency guy with experience (Flynn) until Smith is healthy. Obviously, this will have an impact on other positions.

Running back (4) -- Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Tommy Bohanon. (PUP: Stevan Ridley. Cut: Daryl Richardson, Julian Howsare)

Analysis: No changes here from my last projection. Richardson is a tough cut because he's had a decent camp, but it's a numbers game.

Wide receiver (6) -- Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Quincy Enunwa, Jeremy Kerley, Devin Smith, Walter Powell. (Cut: Shaquelle Evans, TJ Graham, Chris Owusu, DeVier Posey, Saalim Hakim, Jonathon Rumph, Austin Hill.

Analysis: I added Powell, based on a kickoff-return ability, and dropped Graham, who has faded after a hot start. Smith (ribs) won't be ready by Week 1, but they're not about to cut a second-round pick.

Tight end (3) -- Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis, Jace Amaro. (Cut: Wes Saxton, Arthur Lynch, Matt LaCosse).

Analysis: Amaro (shoulder) might not be ready for Week 1, so they may have only two active for the opener. Have a feeling there will be quite a few upcoming transactions at this position.

Offensive line (9) -- D'Brickashaw Ferguson, James Carpenter, Nick Mangold, Willie Colon, Breno Giacomini, Ben Ijalana, Brian Winters, Wesley Johnson, Jarvis Harrison. (Cut: Oday Aboushi, Dakota Dozier, Brent Qvale, Charles Brown, James Brewer, Dalton Freeman)

Analysis: One change from the previous projection: I replaced Freeman with Johnson, who has been taking second-team reps at center. The biggest variable is Ijalana, who has a sprained knee. If he's not ready by opening day, they'll need a backup swing tackle.

Defensive line (5) -- Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, Leonard Williams, Leger Douzable, T.J. Barnes. (Suspended: Sheldon Richardson. Cut: Kevin Vickerson, Stephen Bowen, Deon Simon, Ronald Talley, Jordan Williams)

Analysis: Carrying only five until Richardson returns from his four-game suspension. Bowens versus Barnes is a toss-up. I went with Barnes because they need a wide body to spell Harrison. I dropped Talley, who feels the pinch of having four quarterbacks.

Linebacker (9) -- Quinton Coples, Calvin Pace, David Harris, Demario Davis, Jamari Lattimore, Jason Babin, Lorenzo Mauldin, Joe Mays, Trevor Reilly. (Cut: Erin Henderson, Taiwan Jones, Deion Barnes, Bryan Johnson).

Analysis: Injuries to Mauldin (knee) and Pace (groin) muddy the picture. Their pain is a gain for Babin and Reilly. I replaced Henderson (knee) with Mays, who is carving a niche on special teams.

Secondary (10) -- Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Calvin Pryor, Marcus Gilchrist, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Darrin Walls, Marcus Williams, Dex McDougle, Dee Milliner. (Cut: Rontez Miles, Javier Arenas, Durell Eskridge, Curtis Brown, Keith Lewis, Keon Lyn, Dashaun Phillips)

Analysis: I know, I know, I have seven corners and only three safeties. I think Miles deserves to make the team, but Milliner (wrist) is taking up a spot.

Specialists (3) -- PK Nick Folk, P Ryan Quigley, LS Tanner Purdum (Cut: No one)

Analysis: I feel confident with this position.

There should be one more spot on week 1 because they won't carry Flynn until week 2.  He also had Milliner on the short-term IR in his previous forecast.  I guess they are off that now?  I think they read too much into the extra snaps at C.  Plenty of these guys took C reps.  Isn't Colon able to play C too?  They may be willing to swap him over.  I look at it more as judging versatility than determining the roster at this point.

I wouldn't say that he is definitely the 3rd best WR... He has more experience... yes but Quincy is gonna turn some heads and so is Devin Smith...  Kerley is just limited but what he can do and 4 WR sets keep him in...

Obviously not.  I saw that a bunch were from nj.com.  I didn't realize the last one was espn.com, presumably Cimini.  These are still points to consider.  They both are putting a bunch of stock into extra reps at backup C.  I don't.  The short-term IR thing might free up a slot with Milliner and they both list 4 QBs.  IMO there will be 3 QBs on roster for week 1 and they will cut somebody and add Flynn after the game so that his contract is not guaranteed. It is fair to look at 4 QBs, but IMO that will come after week 1, so it won't be involved in the initial 53.  There is plenty of opportunity for a guy to hit IR before that time comes.

Since the Jets aren't really expected to go all the way this year, I would guess they won't re-sign Flynn unless Fitz is hurt.  I would guess that will go into each game (first 4) hoping Fitz doesn't get hurt.  If he does, you put Petty in and let him hand off the ball and give up on that game (Flynn wasn't going to win it for you anyway).  Once Geno is healthy he will back up unless Fitz sucks or gets hurt.

If Fitz does suck or get hurt before Geno is back, I would expect they would sign Flynn the next day for the remainder of the games left until Geno can start.

No real basis for that opinion, just a guess; the Jets have too many young hopefuls in positions held by older vets to want to risk loosing one just for Flynn.

I've been of the opinion that they'll cut Flynn before week one (so his full salary is not guaranteed), but that they'll resign him after that and then carry four QBs until Geno is ready. Your scenario is also a possibility. I just think they'd rather hold their breath for just one game instead of four. I don't think they want to play Petty at all.

Kerley isn't very good at football.

Also, wasn't his dedication questioned in the past by Rex's coaching staff?

They are treating Kerley like a guy that you trade for a 6th on cut down day.  He's one of the only guys that returns punts, so I guess that is less likely.  Thought Gailey would find ways to use him, but I guess not.

Idzik also managed to draft a sh*ttier player earlier than Kerley was drafted to replace him.
