Report: NFL implements new procedures for measuring game balls

The Black Sox are the only pre-interwebz cheaters that ever existed, mainly to serve as a reference point for the Patriots. Nobody cares about the Leo Durochers, Pat Bowlens and Jerry Rices of the world who all cheated their way to championships because they are prehistoric and any mention of them is just "everybody does it" deflection from the Patriots' cheating ways.

You are 100% Right.

My fault. Sour grapes. I gotta remember, sour grapes.

I will never expect much fans outside of N.E. to view their rings as anything but tainted. So i wouldnt waste my time.

But i know i read reports, and former players and coaches come out and put spygate n deflategate in its proper perspective so theirs rings are pretty legit and said to be as well by countless others n creditable sources. So big deal if a fan doesn't like them or think they cheated in my eyes.

PS: i hope you start calling for the NFL to take away the accolades of 49ers for their HOF receiver and linemen using illegal substances on their hands to gain a competitive edge as well. All confirmed by Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.

So basically you are only interested in the opinions of the people that agree with you?  Solid approach.

Never said that, but if want to; You're welcome to that opinion.

Funny you would say that though. Cause any article or unbias opinion done by any credible source for the pats or just being logical . Its always received on this site as its probably a pats homer or someone whose incompetent..

In your mind they were legal. Too bad the intent of the rule wasn't to trick teams, wasn't a cheap way to play. Which explains why they changed the rule.

In fact it actually was illegal - refs allowed them to cheat.  The rule states when a change like that is made the defense needs to be given time to make the proper adjustments.  The refs did not give them that time.

So while the Pats weren't penalized - the play itself was against the rules and the Pats knew that and exploited the part-time refs lack of knowledge.

It was clearly designed to take an illegal competitive advantage.  Pat fans can argue rules, legal, illegal but there's simply no way around the utter lack of integrity of that entire organization.

Is the NFL admitting with these new "random" checks that they never cared about how much air was in a football or who handled footballs before or during a game? I don't see anything that mentions a calibrated air pressure gauge or the reason these will be random and not every game.

The NFL has finalized its pregame football inspection and custody procedures in the wake of Deflategate, an NFL officiating source confirmed Sunday to the Globe.

Among the new procedures, the NFL will introduce random football pressure-checking at halftime and after the game, will record pregame PSI data, and use league personnel to guard footballs until closer to kickoff.

The NFL informed its officials of the new rules over the weekend, to be implemented this fall after the Patriots were accused of intentionally deflating their footballs below legal limits in their AFC Championship game victory over the Colts last January.

Former head of officiating Mike Pereira, who first reported the news for Fox Sports, called the new rules an “overreaction” by the NFL. But the league felt it had to take steps to better secure the footballs after the Colts and Ravens complained last January about the Patriots allegedly deflating footballs.

The Patriots have staunchly maintained their innocence over the last six months, claiming that weather conditions naturally deflated their footballs.

“Now the league will have a record of how balls react to the cold,” the officiating source said. “This data could show the Patriot balls reacted normally.”

An NFL spokesman did not return a message seeking comment.

Teams will still be able to provide their own footballs, but several safeguards have been put in place.

Among the new procedures:

The “kicking ball coordinator” at each game, who previously only handled the six “k balls,” will now take custody of all footballs once they have been approved by the officials, and maintain control of the footballs until 10 minutes before kickoff. The coordinator, a member of the officiating crew, and a security representative will bring the 24 approved game footballs (12 for each team) to the on-field replay station, at which point the footballs will be distributed to each team, in the presence of the league security personnel. The 24 backup footballs (12 for each team) will remain secured in the officials’ locker room.

The NFL will designate random games in which to test the football PSI at halftime and after the game. The kicking ball coordinator will collect the footballs from both teams at halftime, will be escorted to the locker room by the league’s security personnel, will measure and record the PSI of all 24 footballs, and then remove the footballs from play. The 24 backup footballs will then be used in the second half.

At the end of each randomly selected game, the kicking ball coordinator will again inspect all game balls from each team and record the results. All recorded information will be reported back to the league office.

Before the game, the referee will designate two members of the officiating crew to inspect the balls pregame. The officials will number the balls 1-12, and record all PSI data. Previously, the balls were not numbered, the data was not recorded, and only one member of the officiating crew inspected the footballs.

The footballs still need to measure between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI. If a ball comes in above or below those numbers, it will be adjusted to 13.0 PSI.

The NFL found two Patriots locker room attendees guilty of a deflation scheme, and implemented historic penalties against the Patriots — a $1 million fine and the loss of first- and fourth-round draft picks for the team, and a four-game suspension for quarterback Tom Brady for being “generally aware” of the alleged scheme.

Brady appealed his suspension to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last month, and is still awaiting resolution almost five weeks later. The NFL Players Association has threatened to file a lawsuit against the NFL if Brady’s suspension is not eliminated. The Patriots have agreed not to fight their penalties.

The two Patriots’ locker room employees — assistant equipment manager John Jastremski and part-time game-day employee Jim McNally — remain suspended by the Patriots.

To stop people from being cheating scumbags?

Why random checks? If the "Integrity" of the game is so important why not go all out?

Test the balls before the game and record the PSI. Test the balls at halftime and record the PSI. Test the balls after the game and record the PSI. Is that so hard NFL?

Because only 1 team has shown themselves to be culpable in needing to be monitored in the first place

Rules have no bearing to a Pats fan. They're above the rules that the rest of the league goes by. Until they're caught, then everyone does it, they're smarter than others or it's jealousy. Of course could just be a misunderstanding of the rules, happens.

Ha ha

But dont worry though. Im hearing within the next 24 to 48 hours the NFL will come out and uphold the 4 games suspension on Tom Brady and arent afraid to go to court.

Per Stephen A. Smith.

A lot of the excuses we hear from Pats fans are like the bank robber who argues that withdrawals are perfectly legal and that all he did was to withdraw cash in a novel way.

They have been cheating.

They have been cheating for years.

Whenever they get caught they simply back into the tried and true strategy of deflection and obfuscation as a mechanism to try and say that what they were doing was really a common practice, which as things turn out it never actually is.

The rest of the owners are sick of Kraft and his cheating dirtbags and finally it looks like some action will be taken.

I'm sure Brady will go into court and if a judge will even hear it or if the NFLPA still wants to back this cheater, he'll laugh at Brady. You're innocent, have nothing to hide, are cooperative? And why did you destroy your phone? Lol, keep laughing. Too funny, he did nothing, hahahaha

"...Brady directed that the cell phone he had used for the prior four months be destroyed. He did so even though he was aware that the investigators had requested access to text messages and other electronic information that had been stored on that phone. ‎During the four months that the cell phone was in use, Brady had exchanged nearly 10,000 text messages, none of which can now be retrieved from that device. The destruction of the cell phone was not disclosed until June 18, almost four months after the investigators had first sought electronic information from Brady."

I remember seeing a baseball player on TV defend his team when they were accused of cheating. "No one does that sh-t." The guy said. Why not. "Because that's Bush league." The Pats have made the NFL Bush league. Everybody is so f-ing focused on the perversion of the rules that no one GIVES A SH-T that it's played the RIGHT WAY. God. What a way to run a league.

read it before. ha ha....but going off this, every missed call in the NFL by the refs should be viewed as a team cheating. Ok. got it!

nothing to see here. Just sour grapes, as i said before.

You try to compare two very different things but every objective thinking person knows there is a large difference between intalling a designed illegal play into the game plan ala Pats*  (see AFC CG). Comparing that designed illegal play to missed calls that happen every game ie: for holding, roughing, late hit, set pick, pass interference etc that happens in the heat of almost all games only makes you look stupid. We know you would never admit that difference anyway so root on fool.
