The Blue Jays have struck a deal to acquire star Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins in exchange for Jose Reyes and a trio of minor leaguers, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (links to Twitter). Needless to say, the move constitutes one of the most stunning deadline deals in recent memory.

Young righties Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro and Jesus Tinoco make up the key components of Colorado’s return, per reports. No money is changing hands other than the differences in the contracts, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com adds (Twitter links). As Rosenthal notes on Twitter, Tulowitzki will pick up a $2MM assignment bonus and a full no-trade clause by virtue of being dealt.

This probably deserves it's own thread. Odd trade, scoring runs wasn't the Blue Jays problem, don't think they can slug their way out of .500, they need to upgrade their rotation and if I was a Jays fan I would be worried what their GM Alex Anthopoulos would be willing to trade for say Jeff Samardzija. Anthopoulos has made a dozen or so moves the last few years to save his job. Teams are going to think they can bend him over a barrel for some pitching.

Rockies will almost certainly try and flip Reyes, I see no reason why they keep keep him. Should add more young prospects to their Tulo return.  Maybe a reunion with the Mets? Nearly $50 million Reyes is still owed probably makes it prohibitive for the Metsies. If they can't get a taker on that contract and get a prospect or two in return it's pretty disastrous trade overall if you ask me.

and Yankee fans, the Jays are 8 games back in the loss column, and Felix Doubront is still in their rotation. Cashman won't panic, neither should you.
