Observations From NYG Game

After watching the game again you have to be pleased with the game by game improvement of the team:

- Excellent punt and kick returns from Walter Powell and Chris Owusu.
Those talents have to give them a good shot at making the team as the
6th & 7th WR's.  When was the last time we had a big time punt returner?
Santana Moss?

- No more Eric Decker as a punt returner please.  It didn't make sense
to risk him and on top of that he was AWFUL

- Demario Davis needs to get his game in gear.  His coverage on two
JAG TE's was awful and he can't whiff on tackles.  Joe Mays has impressed
me with his ability to diagnose what the offense is doing and putting
the DLine in proper position.  If Davis can't do better we should try him

- Our special team substitutions have to get cleaned up.  We had one
too few men on the field and one too many men on the field

- Fantastic job by all of our OLines.  The run blocking has been devastating
and the QB's have been clean all pre-season

- Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Zac Stacy have been fantastic

- Subtle yet interesting move by Gailey to help Fitzpatrick with his throws
outside the numbers.  Instead of keeping him between the hashes Gailey would
move Fitzpatrick towards the side he was throwing to which cut down the
distance on the throws

- You started to see the "big slot" formations really pay off in the run 
game.  Particularly with Ivory's reps, Quincy Enunwa would come in
motion and destroy the CB covering him.  Opening up the edges for Ivory

- Good to see continued growth in Fitzpatrick's chemistry with the rest
of the offense.  He's playing the way you want him to, efficient with no
turnovers

- Good to see Trevor Reilly take advantage of his opportunities.  He was
in the backfield a ton

- Good game for Cro with the pick 6.  He even did a good job when he got 
reps covering Beckham, who is the type of WR (sudden) who usually eats
him up

- Three other defenders had good games: Leger Douzable, Marcus Williams and
Dexter McDougle

Agree with all your observations.  One comment.  If the Jets carry 4 QB's into the season, I can't see any way they can carry 7 WR's, which sucks,.  They may have to leta good WR hit the streeet

Great job, agree on most things. Disagree on Davis. He'll be fine and is better than Mays imo.

The great likelihood is that Geno starts when he is healthy AND the coaching staff thinks he is better than Fitz who is a JAG veteran with health issues. Yeah, let's cut Geno. So dumb.

If we get the numbers he put up last season over the 16 game season it's hard to argue that we are not a playoff team

I loved what I saw on Saturday night but at the same time, this Giants team is a disaster. Not putting too much stock into this game. Let's just hope we don't lose key players to injuries and offense can develop a good chemistry. Defense will be above average as always.

it's pretty cool to have a WR like marshall that catches the damn ball !!!!

rodgers and bowles have been keeping the QB pressure to 4 or 5 guys for the most part.  should be fun to see them crank it up during the season

Great thread, great observations.  Just wish the Jets didn't play one of the worst defenses out there right now with their injuries in the Giants week 3 of preseason, playing the Browns D week 1 will be much different, but same should go for the difference on offenses as the Giants O is much better than the Browns O.

agreed. I'm all aboard the fitz train but Geno is far and away better than Petty at this point. Once the coaching staff determines that petty is ready I'm all for dumping Geno

I'll take the weak match up.. especially if it's what it takes to get this offense in sync before the regular season. I was very impressed by both lines. They were blowing the Giants off the ball (no homo)

Thanks KRL. Over the years now you have been very appreciated for your thoughts which for the most part are on point.

If the ST can play like that game the Jets will steal a few W's this season. I thought Hakim was good for the Gunner position

but the staff cut him today. Dexter did well on ST also. He was the escort on the TD. We all know the Jets can pound the rock with authority. 29 and 33 both look a bit faster this season. Could be my aging eyes though?.

Harris made a nice tackle over on the sideline on one run. Jarrett and Miles look good.

For someone who has become inured to INTs the past 6 years, the fact that they have none amazed me.  I know it is pre season, but I am still enjoying it.

Question for the roster rule experts:

Do we have to use three roster spots on Richardson while he's suspended, Ridley while he's

on the PUP and Milliner while he's on short term IR?  Because I'd like to use those spots somewhere

else while we wait for them

I am pretty sure that they are roster exempt.  They still count among the "top 53" for cap purposes, but we can carry additional players.  I don't know much about the short term IR, somebody posted it last week and said "look at google" but I am pretty sure the bit I saw was just a restatement of the PUP list.  It doesn't seem to serve any purpose if they count against the roster - I think it is just like being able to add 1 player to the PUP list after they have practiced.

As for the game, why didn't those guys ever say that the extra point was blocked?  They were Giants announcers and the sound of two hits (kick-block) was pretty clear.  Whoever that poor kid was got no credit.  I also thought that Landon Collins got away with a horsecollar, but nobody mentioned it.  He didn't rip the guy down like Roy Williams used to, but he clearly grabbed the "horsecollar" and used it as part of the tackle.  Is that legal?  I think there was another flag anyway, but I was surprised at the no call.

If Richardson were to get injured on Thursday, assuming he plays at all, (God Forbid!) and wasn't physically able to play in say the first two games, would those games count toward his four game (plus) suspension or does the suspension begin when he his healthy?
